COMBINED MOTOR VEHICLE SERVICE CABINET AND TABLE Filed Nov. 2, 1958 INVENTOR ATTORN EYS Patented Dec. 19, 1939 COMBINED MOTOR VEHICLE SERVICE CABINET AND TABLE I John R. King, Dallas, Tex. Application November 2, 1938 SerialNo. 238,455
-3 Claims.
My invention relates to a combined motor vehicle service cabinet and table and has as one of the principal objects thereof the provision of sucha device so constructed and arranged as to be quickly attached to the back 01' the front seat of said motor vehicle to provide a readily adjustable table and serving cabinet for the tonneau of said vehicle. Another object of my invention is to provide a lo device of the character described capable of installation in motor vehicles already in use without modifying the same.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable in use, eilicient in operation and economical in manufacture.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the character. described capable of being quickly attached to and detached from the back of the front seat as desired.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference character's designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure l is a perspective view of my invention .as applied to the back of a front seat of a motor vehicle and illustrating the table top or service board in extended position.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of my invention in attached position on the back of the front seat.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view in section illustrating the upper end of one of the channel members connected to the rear face of the cabinet.
In practicing my invention, I provide a motor vehicle seat 5 formed with the usual back 6 having a rear wall I to which is attached, by means of screws 8, upper and lower pairs of U-shaped brackets 9. Detachably seated in and supported by said brackets 9 are downwardly disposed ends 9a of hook-shaped supporting members ill, the opposite ends of said members extending outwardly from the wall I and having fixed thereto upper and lower ends of channel members ll.
The channel members are arranged in parallel relation, one adjacent each end of the back 6 and their channels disposed towards each other.
One side wall of each channel member has se-.
cured thereto, by means of screws l2, the rear wall l3 of a service cabinet I, the latter being fashioned with a front wall I! equipped with hinged doors It for permitting access therein. The lower end of the front wall I! tapers downwardly towards the rear wall thereof to provide foot space for the occupants of the tonneau. 6
The cabinet is closed at the upper end thereof by a top wall Ilia having an upper face disposed in a horizontal plane for a purpose hereinafter set forth. The channel members I I are provided, in the end walls thereof, with lengthwise 10 extending slots I! in which are slidably mounted trunnions l8 fixed to and extending laterally from one end of a table top or service board IS. The table top or service board I! is of a thickness permitting the latter to have a sliding flt between 15 the respective side walls of the channel members. The side walls of the cabinet l4 have pivoted thereto adjustable legs which when extended coact with the lower ends of the members It to support the cabinet in an upright position when 20 detached from the seat.
The serving board l9, when not in use, is p0- sitioned between the channel members II and concealed therein ,by means of the cabinet ll. When it is desired to usethe table top or serv- 2!! ing board, the latter is raised upwardly in the channel members until the trunnions engage the upper end of the slots l1 and in this position .the board I9 is pivoted outwardly and downwardly onto the top wall l6a of the cabinet, the 30 latter coactlng with said board to support the same in a horizontal and usable position.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and efliclent device providing a readily accessible serving board and cab- 35 inet for the occupants of a tonneau of a motor vehicle or the like and which. is so constructed and arranged that the cabinet cooperates with the board to maintain said board in a horizontal position when extended for use. 40
It is obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be distinctly understood that the invention is not limited to the specific' 5 construction as illustrated and. described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation which are capable of extended application in advance forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope 50 of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a service cabinet having rear and top walls, spacedchannel members secured to said rear wall and formed with length- 55 i wise extending slots having upper ends disposed above said top wall, supporting members carried by said channel members and formed with sections for detachable connection to members on the back of a motor vehicle seat whereby to support said cabinet on said back, a serving board interposed between said cabinet and said back and embraced by said channel members, and trunnions carried by said board and slidable upwardly within said slots for engagement with said upper ends to position said board above said top wall whereby to permit said board to be pivoted outwardly to assume a horizontal position, said top wall of said cabinet coacting with said board for maintaining the latter in said horizontal position. I
2. A device of the character described, comprising, a serving board supporting device having a rear face, spaced channel members secured to said face and provided with lengthwise extending slots having upper ends disposed above said device, supporting members carried by said channel members and formed with sections for detachable connection to members on the back of a motor vehicle seat whereby to support said cabinet on said back, a serving board embraced by said channel members and concealed against said back by said device, and trunnions carried by said board and slidable within said slots for engagement with said upper ends otthe latter to position said board above said device whereby to permit said board to be pivoted outwardly over said 'device to assume a horizontal position, said device coacting with said board tc maintain the latter in said horizontal position.
3. In combination with a service cabinet having a top wall and provided with means for detachable connection to members on the back of a front seat of a motor vehicle, spaced guide members fixed to said cabinet at the rear thereof adjacent said back, a serving board slidably carried by said guide members adjacent said rear of said cabinet and slidable in said guide members to. a position abovesaid cabinet, and means pivotally connecting said board .to said guide members to permit said board to be operated m JQHN KING.
