Filed Dec. 7, 1965, Ser. No. 512,602 5 Claims. (Cl. 312-235) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates generally to a counter or bar and more specifically to a counter or bar that includes a stool that is adapted to be rotated into and out of the counter or bar.

The counter of this invention essentially comprises a counter that is adapted to rest on a floor and that includes a top, a wall with door opening therein and a door for closing the opening. A stationary vertically extending post is disposed within the counter and to one side of the opening. A horizontally extending arm is pivotally affixed to the vertical post and includes two portions, one of which is spaced from the vertical post and extends laterally of the portion immediately extending from said post. The cabinet door is supported on the portion of the horizontal member that is spaced from the vertical post and is adapted to close the door opening upon rotation of the horizontal member. A stool seat is mounted on the horizontal member and moves into the cabinet when the door is rotated into the opening.

Other features and the advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the counter 11 preferably includes a top 12, bottom 13, walls 15, one of which walls includes an opening 17, and a door 19, which is translatably moved from the position shown to a position in which it closes the wall opening 17. It will be understood that the bottom 13 is not necessary to this invention but that an open bottomed cabinet could rest directly on the floor of the room in which it is located.

The stool frame 21 that is described below is preferably of tubular or pipe type construction. A stationary vertically extending post 23 is disposed within the cabinet and to one side of the wall opening 17. The post 23 preferably includes flanges 25 and 27 on the upper and lower ends, respectively. These flanges 25 and 27 include screw holes, through which screws 29 extend and screw into the top 12 and bottom 13 of the cabinet. The post 23 is comprised of pipes of two different diameters, the reason for which will appear later in this specification. The larger diameter pipe 33 serves as the lower portion of the post 23 and a smaller diameter pipe 35 is screwed or welded thereinto. A coupling 37 is attached to the upper end of the pipe 35 and a pipe 39 connects to the upper end of the coupling and extends to the flange 25.

35 and 39 may be secured into the coupling 39 by any means well known to those skilled in the art, as by welding.

A horizontally extending arm 41 is pivotally attached to the post 23 and includes two portions 43 and 45. The

portion 43 extends immediately from the vertical post 23 and the portion 45 is spaced from the vertical post 23 and extends laterally of the portion 43.

In the preferred embodiment, the means for pivotally attaching the horizontal arm 41 to the vertical post includes a T member 47. The run portion of the T member 47 is of such internal diameter that it slides freely and rotatable over the pipe 35 and abuts against the upper end of the larger diameter pipe 33. The horizontal arm 41 preferably comprises a pipe 49 which is screwed or welded into the T member 47, an elbow member 51, one leg of which is screwed onto the end of the pipe 47 and another pipe 53 which is screwed into the other leg of said elbow member.

A stool seat 55 is mounted on the horizontal arm 41 and in the preferred embodiment is elevated from said horizontal member. This elevation is accomplished by securing one leg of an elbow member 57 to the extending end of pipe 53 and attaching the combination of pipes 59 and 61 and T member 63, as shown in FIG. 1, to the other leg. The T member 63 is oriented so that the T is directed parallel to the pipe 53 and one end of a pipe 65 is inserted therein. A flange 67 is affixed to the other end of the pipe and the door 19 is attached thereto by screws 69 which extend through screw holes included in the flange.

The door 19 is preferably positioned adjacent the stool seat 55 and extends ithereabove to furnish a back rest for one seated on the stool.

In the preferred embodiment, the seat 55 is mounted on a fitting 71 that is rotatably attached to the pipe 53. The fitting 71 includes a journal that co-operates with the pipe 53 and renders it rotatable thereon.

The front wall 15 preferably includes an outwardly facing bevel 73 along one side of the opening 17 which is adapted to co-operate with a mating bevel 75 included in the door 19. The bevels 73 and 75 are of such slope that they move into contact engagement with each other when the door 19 is rotated in to the closed position.

From the above, it will be apparent that this invention provides a convenient bar or counter stool which may be rotated into the bar or counter when not in use and may be rotated therefrom when it is desirable to utilize said stool. Thus the counter has a neat, clean appearance when the stool is not in use and at the same time the stool is readily available. While only one door and stool is shown, it is understood that a plurality would generally be provided.

While the form of embodiment herein shown and described constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms may be adopted falling within the scope of the claims that follow.

I claim:

1. A combination including:

(A) a hollow counter having:

(1) a top wall;

(2) a front wall connected with the top wall, said front wall having an opening therein;

(3) a door adapted to be moved for closing the opening;

(4) a floor;

(B) means for pivotally supporting said door for translatable movement relative to the front wall of the counter, said means including:

(1) a post attached to the floor and disposed in the counter to one side of the opening in the counter;

(2) a substantially horizontally extending arm having one end pivotally carried by the post and formed to include:

(a) a portion extending immediately from the post,

Claims

1. A COMBINATION INCLUDING: (A) A HOLLOW COUNTER HAVING: (1) A TOP WALL; (2) A FRONT WALL CONNECTED WITH THE TOP WALL, SAID FRONT WALL HAVING AN OPENING THEREIN; (3) A DOOR ADAPTED TO BE MOVED FOR CLOSING THE OPENING; (4) A FLOOR; (B) MEANS FOR PIVOTALLY SUPPORTING SAID DOOR FOR TRANSLATABLE MOVEMENT RELATIVE TO THE FRONT WALL OF THE COUNTER, SAID MEANS INCLUDING: (1) A POST ATTACHED TO THE FLOOR AND DISPOSED IN THE COUNTER TO ONE SIDE OF THE OPENING IN THE COUNTER; (2) A SUBSTANTIALLY HORIZONTALLY EXTENDING ARM HAVING ONE END PIVOTALLY CARRIED BY THE POST AND FORMED TO INCLUDE: (A) A PORTION EXTENDING IMMEDIATELY FROM THE POST, (B) A SECOND PORTION SPACED FROM THE POST AND EXTENDING LATERALLY OF THE FIRST MENTIONED PORTION AND THE END OF WHICH SUPPORTS THE DOOR, (C) AND A STOOL CARRIED BY THE ARM INTERMEDIATE THE ENDS OF THE ARM, THE UPPER SURFACE OF THE STOOL TERMINATING BELOW THE LOWER EDGE OF THE OPENING, WHEREBY WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED, THE STOOL IS DISPOSED WITHIN THE COUNTER.
