HORSE-COLLAR CONNECTION.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,894, dated November 22, 1881.

Application filed August 24, 1881.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER G. GALO, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Horse-Oollar Connection, of which the following is a specification.

The invention consists in a'novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section, of my improved collar. Fig.2 is a-section of the upper ends of the collar, showing the locking device. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line a." mof Fig. 2; and Fig. 4is an elevation of the lower ends of the parts of the collar, showing the hinge.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

In the drawings, A A represent the two parts of the collar, which are hollow, and molded from papier-inach, or paper-pulp mixed with some glutinous substance. Theseparts of the collar are formed by pouring the prepared pulp into a mold composed of a core built up of separate sections, surrounded by a casing having such interior form as will givethc proper thickness and exterior shape to the parts of the collar, the sections of the core being of such form and size as to be adapted to be withdrawn, one by one, from either end of the parts of the collar after the pulp has become fixed. The parts or shells of the collar being thus obtained, the open ends of the part A and the lower end of the part A, are plugged with the wooden plugs a a, and to the plugs a a are secured, by screws or similar means, theplatesccof the hingeG, which hinge unites the parts of the collar, as shown in the drawings. To the plug a is secured by screws or similar means the plate D, which is provided with the loops at d, which loops are adapted to enter the corresponding slots (1 d of the plate D, which closes the upper end of the part A of the collar. This plate D is socured to, or made integral with, the metal F, which frame is secured in the upper end of the part A by the rivet or bolt 0, and serves (beside the purpose hereinafter mentioned) a similar purpose to that of the blocks a and a-- viz., that of supporting or re-enforcin g the end of the shell or part A. This frame F is composed of the arms f f, through the ends of (ModeL) which the bolt 0 passes, and of the cross plate (,1, and riveted to the arm f is the flat spring '5, and rising from the plateg is the upwardly projecting arm h, which is cut away from its face to hold and guide the sliding catches G, which are adapted to retain the loops d d of the plate D when the upper ends of the parts of thecollnrarebroughttogether. Thecatches G areconstantly held in the position shown in Fig. 2, against the stop 6, which rises from the plate gin position to engage the loops d d by the spring t, except when forced forward against the tension of the spring by pressure upon the thumb-piece g, which protrudes from the collar in convenient position for unlocking the parts of the collar, when the same is to be removed from the horses neck.

Thus constructed the collar is light, durable, inexpensive, and of such construction that it can be easily and conveniently placed upon and removed from the horse.

Instead of using the plugs to afor closing and supporting the open ends of the parts of the collar, metal shells, or thimbles of the proper size and shape, formed with the hingeplates, and with the loops (1, may he used, and in most instances this is the preferred plan.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the hollow sections A A, made of papier-mach or other similar material, of the plugs a a and a and the frame F, secured in the ends of the sections by screws or bolts, substantially as shown and described, whereby .the ends of the'said sections are reenforced and provision made for attaching the fastening devices, as set forth.

2. The combination, with the sections A A, hinged together at their lower ends, and the plate D, provided with the loops d and secured to the upper end of the sectionA of the frame F, the plate D having slots (1, the arms ff, the plate g, the arm h, the spring 2', the stop '5, and the catches G, provided with the thumbpiece 9, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
