Description

B. A. HOWER PURGE PROTECTOR Feb. 2%, 1950 Filed July 5, 1945 INVENTQR.
Patented Feb. 28, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PURGE PROTECTOR Bruce A. Hower, Gary, Ind. Application J uly 3, 1945, Serial No. 603,019
2 Claims.
the shipment or moving thereof from purge or exuding liquids from the mouth or nostrils.
In shipping cadavers or in shifting the coffin during handling thereof there is frequently encountered the condition that there will be a purging from the mouth resulting in spoiling the clothing or casket pillows and requiring additional dressing of the corpse. Such action frequently occurs also (especially during the night) when a corpse has not been completely aspirated. The primary object of this invention is therefore to provide protective means to overcome. the condition foregoing described and such protective means is preferably in the form hereinafter described and set forth, consisting essentially of an absorbent band or collar which is positioned about the neck or chin of the body.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this kind which is simple in construction and can readily be disposed of after the body has reached its destination and also removed from the body without disturbing the body.
To the foregoing objects, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a detail plan view of a purge proengage. The reverted portion of the band or strip I is stitched, as indicated at I 5 and I6, so as to provide the desired hem or tunnel within which the drawstring- I4 is adapted to slidably engage. The strip H has extending from one edge thereof a tapered strip I! which is wider than the strip Ii. The strip IT constitutes a band which has secured to the inner surface thereof an absorbent band I8. The band I8 may be formed of cotton or other moisture absorbing material, whereas the band or outer covering 11 may be of moistureproof material.
In the use of this protector the band formed by the integral strip l0 and the strip I1 is disposed either about the neck or the chin of the body and the band is then tightened by tying the ends of the drawstring l4 together. The band I! being flared will readily engage snugly about the chin and neck of the body so that if any liquid should exude from the mouth or nose and'run down toward the neck, this liquid will be absorbed by the absorbent band l8 carried by the outer non-absorbent band I'l. After the body has reached its destination, the protector hereinbefore described may be readily removed by untying the ends of the drawstring l4 and pulling the band from beneath the neck or head.
The exact configuration illustrated is regarded as the optimum, but some of the desirable results inherent in this disclosure may be obtained by various slight modifications including some departure from the exact configuration shown, and it is therefore requested that the scope of the invention should be regarded as limited only by the terms of the claims.
What I claim is:
1. A purge protector comprising an elongated band formed of waterproof material having an outwardly flared upper portion, the'bottom edge of said band being reverted to form a hem, a
draw string in said hem, and a second band secured inside of said flared portion and formed of a moisture absorbent material.
2. A purge protector comprising an outer band having an outwardly flared upper portion and formed of a moisture repellant material, the bottom edge of said band being reverted to provide a hem, two rows of stitching securing said reverted edge to said band adjacent the edge thereof and along the line of reversion, a draw string in said hem between said rows of stitching for securing said purge protector about the neck of the wearer and an inner band formed of a moisture absorbent material secured to the inner sur- 3 face of said flared upper portion whereby any waste material exuded by the wearer will be caught in the flared portion of said outer band and. absorbed by said inner band.
