This application is a division of an application v in the names of the same applicants filed July 3, 1940, and bearing Serial Number 343,846, now Patent Number 2,358,527, and an application in the names of the same applicants filed August 18, 1942, and bearing Serial Number 455,230, now
Patent Number 2,402,429.
The invention broadly is directed to cooking ranges or the like in which the cooking is accomplished by gas or other 'fluid fuel burners and more particularly to what weterm, and which are generally referred to in thetrade, as heavy duty ranges because they are used for commercial cooking operations such as are performed in hotels, restaurants and institutionswhere cooking on a large scale is performed. The invention however is not limited to heavy duty ranges but can be used in connection with ranges performing cooking operations of any character what'- soever.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a range in Which a novel construction and arrangement is provided'for igniting the range cooking top burner or burners.
Another and further object of the invention is 3 i to provide an improvedmanner for supplying and distributing secondary air to the cooking top burners or burner and combining the mechanical construction which controls the distribution of said air with an ignition system for said burners in such a manner as to provide protection for said burners from spill-overs or boil-overs which inevitably occur in the operation of cooking on a range.
Other objects, novel features of construction vided. The inner burner F is ring-like in form by reason of its having a central opening. The outer burner G comprises a second ring and this burner surrounds the first burner in spaced relation thereto to provide a circular opening or passagewaybetween the burners. The inner burner;
on its upper face is provided with a plurality of upwardly extending burner jets 40 arranged in spaced relationship and the outer burner G on its upper face is provided throughout its length with a plurality of upwardly extending burner jets M arranged in spaced relationship about the circumference of the burner body.
A separate and distinct gas or other fuel'supply, not shown, is provided for each of the burners. Primary air for the burners is provided in the usual manner. Secondary air for the burners is largely supplied thereto by passing upwardly through the space 39 between the burners.
The outer burner is provided with a burner jet llll the upper end of which is in a plane above the tops ,of the jets of either of the burners A flash-light tube H15 is associated with this lighter jet. One 'endof the lighter Qtubeis suitably supported on the lighter jet as at I06 while its opposite end is provided with a leg ID] the bottom of which engages the upper face of the burner ring F while its sides are shaped to abut and encircle the opposing side walls of a pair of adjacent burner jet extensions 40. The flash tube is openended and has its outer end I08 arranged adjacent a burner orifice H12 in the lighter jet while its inner end Hl9is arranged adjacent a burner orifice All. of the inner burner ring F.
In operation, the inner burner ring is manually ignited by a match or otherwise and the gas-air mixture escaping from the lighter jet orifice I02 is forced through the lighter tube and is ignited by the burning jet M] of the inner burner ringF. Upon becoming ignited the tube acts on the wellknown principle of flashing back through the tube to cause the ignition of the gas-air mixture escaping from the lighter jets H13 which jets in turn cause the ignition of the fuel escaping from the burner ring G. I
The spill-over and aeration tray is provided at spaced points throughout its length with a plurality of wings 58 which engage the inner burner ring F and serve as a means of support for the tray.
In extending from the inner to the outer burner ring the flash tube must extend over the combination aeration and spill-over tray K. This tray is constructed in a particular manner to permit this. The tray K is a circular trough-like element which is disposed within and extends throughout the length of the space 39 between the two burners. Actually however the troughlike portion of the tray K is not endless in that it has closedseparated ends which are joined by a solid V-shaped element made up of side Walls I l and Ill. This element We have termed a bridge and the top of this bridge is disposed in a plane which is a substantial distance below the top or side walls of the trough-like portion of the tray. As a consequence of this construction there is actually a cut-out portion in the tray and the flash tube is disposed in this cut-out portion and extends across the top of the bridge.
The disposition, size, and configuration of the tray K is such that secondary air passing upwardly between the burners is directed toward the burner jets 4D and 4| of the inner and outer burners respectively.
Specific changes in the construction illustrated and described can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention which is to be limited only by the scope of the hereinafter appended claims.
We claim:
1. For use in a gaseous fuel burning range or the like having a pair of concentrically arranged spaced ring burners, an open ended flash tube extending from one burner to the other to provide automatic ignition of one burner from the other, a combined aeration and collection tray disposed in and substantially filling .the space between said burners and'having side walls closely adjacent the side walls-of the burners and ex cally arranged spaced ring burners, each of said burners being provided on its upper ,face with a plurality of spaced burner jets, a combined aeration and collection tray disposed in andisubstantially filling the space between the burners, esaid tray having side walls spaced from and extending upwardly past the burners to a point above the burners and the burner jets thereof, a lighter jet in the outer burner, an open ended flash .tube having one end in ignition relationship with said lighter jet and its other end in gas- :receiving relationship with a burner .jet of said inner burner, said tray having ,a cut-out portion in its side walls to permit the passage of saidflash tube across said tray, the lighter jet of the outer burner being an extension extending vertically from the upper face of said burner, an adjacent pair of burner jets .of the inner burner extending vertically from the face of said burner, the outer end of the flash. tube being supported upon the lighter jet of the outer burner, the inner end of the flash tube being provided with a downwardly extending leg the lower end of which engages the upper face of the inner burner at a point intermediate said pair of jet extensions of said burner, said leg being shaped to abut and encircle the opposing side walls of said jet extensions, and said flash tube having its longitudinal axis disposed in substantially a horizontal plane.
r aeration and collection tray disposed in the space between the burners and being of a trough-like configuration in cross section, said tray having side walls extending upwardly beyond the tops of the burners and the outlet ends of said burner jets, said tray at one point in its length being cut transversely and provided with a pair of transversely extending end walls in spaced relationship forming lend closures for the tray, a bridge interconnecting said tray end walls, the top of said bridge being disposed a substantial distance. below the top of the. tray, a lighter jet in and extending to a point above the outer burner arm, an open ended flash tube having one end in ignition relationship with said lighter jet and its other .end in .gas receiving relationship with a burner jet of said inner burner, said flash tube extending across the connecting bridge of said aeration tray and being disposed between the spaced end wall closures of said tray, the outer end of the flash tube being supported upon the lighter ietof the router burnerring, the inner end of the flash tube being provided with a downwardly extending leg the lower end of which engages the upper face of the-inner burner at a point intermediate the said adjacent pair of burner jet extensions .of said burner, and said flash tube leg .being shaped to abut and encircle the opposing side walls of said pair of burner jet extensions.
