Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN J. SGHEELKY, OF MARTINSBURG, EST VIRGINIA,
SASH=PULLEY-CO RD GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,799, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed October 21, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OHISTIAN J. Senna LKY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Martinsburg, in the county of Berkeley and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord- Guards for W'indowSashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to theaccompanyingdrawings,and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention consists in certain improvements in pulley-blocks and cord-guards for window-sashes, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view, and Fig. 2 an edge view, of a pulley with my improved pulley-block and cord-guard applied thereto. Fig. 3 shows, in perspective, my improved cord-guard; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section artl broken awa Y of the u i )er )art 1 P 3 5 l l l of the frame or boxing of a window with my improvements applied thereto.
D represents the pulley-block, which is pref,- erably inserted in the frame or boxing A, as shown in the drawings, in the same groove, b, as that in which the parting-strip a is in serted, the lower end of said pulley-block resting upon the top of the parting-strip a, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and in full lines, Fig. 4. By this means the pulleys are secured to the frame without any of their parts projecting beyond the edge of the parting-strip, thereby avoiding either the mortising of the frame or the construction of a special form of frame for the reception of the pulley-blocks and pulleys. The pulley D and its block I) may be secured to the frame by a single screw, to, passing through the pulley. and constituting a pivot upon which the pulley will rotate; or'the pulley-block may be provided with additional holes at its top and bottom to furnish additional means forsecuring the same to theframe.
In the top of the pulley-block D, orat each end thereof, should it be desired to construct the same with capability of reversal, is formed a recess or groove, 1), to receive the raised central portion, 0, of the cord-guard E. This guard E is of semicircular form, so that when it is placed over the top of the pulley its two arms 0 6 will embrace the topand upper portion of the sides thereofland prevent the sash-cord becoming disengaged from the pulley D during its rapid movement, or when the cord is slack. At the lower end of each arm 0 is a prong, d. These prongs are driven into the framingand serve to retain the guard E firmly in place.
This pulley-block and cord-guard, while especially designed for use with sash-balance is equally applicable to windows of every form where the sash-cord is liable to become loose or stretched in use, or otherwise in danger of becoming disengaged from the pulleys.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination of the pulley-block D, having in its end a recess or groove, 1), and the cordguard E, having raised central portion, a, semicircular arms c, and prongs d, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
O. J. SOHEELKY.
