SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,756, dated November 22, 1881, Application filed July 27, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. GRAUF, of Monroe, in the county ot'ilIonroe and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Olover-Hullers, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of machines particularly designed for hulling clover; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and various combinations of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a horizontal axial section. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on the line a: m in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section on the line of the axis of the cylinder. Figs. 4 and 5 show, in perspective, the construction of the rasps.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable frame and case which contain the operative parts of the machine. In the lower halfof thist'rame is placed the concaveB, which is formed in two sections, a a, thelatter being stationary while the former is made adjustable, so as to enlarge or diminish the discharge-throat b. To theinner face of this concave B, and at equal distances apart, are rigidly secured the arc-shaped sections 0, the exposed surfaces of which are roughened in any desired manner, and the spaces between such segmental plates, upon the inner face of the concave, are covered by similarly-roughencd plates D, the sections 0 being tapering in cross-section.
E represents a shaft, which is jour'naled transversely of the frame in proper bearings, and has secured to it within the frame the cylinder or drum F. To the outer face of this drum or cylinder are secured the rings G, composed of sections, and in cross-section, similar to the plates 0 in the concave, each segment of the rings G being provided with a stud, d, which is let into the face of the cylinder and receives a nut from the inside, as shown in Fig. 2. These rings are spaced upon the face of the cylinder, so that in the rotation of the latter the rings G will move symmetrically beplates H, the exposed surfaces of both H and G being properlyroughened by corrugation or otherwise, as may be most desired.
I is a divider-board, secured at the top of the machine, and extends down nearly to the peripheryof the rings G, while fingers in the edge of the board extend in between therings G nearly to the plates H, and being so arranged that in the rotation of the device this divider-board, with its fingers, will scrape off and remove any material which may adhere to the surfaces of the rasps.
At the front side of the machine, and at the upper end of the concave, is pivotallysecured on the shaft J the apron K, the fingers of which extend inward when closed down upon the rasps G, without interfering with thepassage of the clover; but should any stones be fed in with the seed they would make their presence known by striking against the apron, which then can be tilted up by means of its crank-handlej, and the hand inserted through a proper opening in the wall of the case, from either side, to remove it.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A concave for hulling-machines, consisting of two parts, each of which is provided with arc-shaped sections 0, roughened on both sides, and curved plates D, roughened on their uppersnrl'aces, said sections and curved plates being arranged alternately with each other, substantially as described.
2. In a clover-hnlling machine, the cylinder F, provided with ring-sections G, roughened on both sides, and with roughened plates H,
arranged between the ring-sections G, in combination with a concave. constructed substantially as described, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a clovcr-hulling machine, and in combination with the concave and cylinder thereof, provided with ring-sections and plates, as described, the apron K, pivoted at the upper edge of the concave, and having fingers to pass between the arc-shaped sections of the cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose specidivider I being provided with fingers to pass fied. between the projecting sections of the cylin- 1o 4.
