ROOF-BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,737, dated November 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SUMNER F. BLACK, a
F citizen of the United States of America, residdo hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to devices used in theroofing of buildings, whereby and whereon the workmen may stand and the roofing material can be deposited.
My invention consists in the combination of a bar provided with a dog or spike at one end and a foot at the other, and having a longitudinal slot and a series of bolt-holes, an adjustable hinged orjointed bracket, secured to the bar by'means of a bolt and a separable button, and capable of adjustment to the inclines of roof of different pitch, as hereinafter set forth. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the device in place on a root. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of my invention; and Fig. 3 is a view of the bar and one end of one limb of the joint-ed bars, with the button to engage in the slot made near the upper end of the bar.
The letter A indicates the device complete, consisting of the bars B, O, and D. At one end of the bar B is firmly fixed the dog or spike a, pointed or sharpened for the purpose of being driven into the material of the roof, or of hooking over the comb, and thus securing the device against slipping or other displacement. At the other or lower end of the bar B is the foot 0, made at right angles to the bar and firmly secured thereto, as shown in Fig. 3. This serves as a foundation for the lower part of the device, and operates to steady it. At 0 in the bar is a longitudinal slot, in which engages the button at the upper end of the upper limb of the bracket; and the letter (Z indicates holes in the bar for the purpose of receiving the fastening devices at the end of the lower limb of the bracket.
The letter (1 indicates the upper limb of the bracket, which is securely jointed to its mate, and has in its upper end the button 0, which is capable of being turned around, and which engages with the slot 0. By turning the button at right angles to the slot and across the side of the bar, the bar and the upper limb of the bracket are secured together.
The letter D showsthe lower limb of the bracket, hinged to thebench limb atf, and having the bolt or screw g, serving as means to secure the lower end to the bar, through the bolt-holes heretofore mentioned.
To attain the objects of my invention, two or more of the brackets complete are used,according to the dimensions of the space to be occupied on a root. The dog or spike of the bar is placed over the comb of the roof or driven into the material Of-the roof, and the stability of the device is maintained by the foot at the end resting on the roof or crosspicces to which the roof is nailed. A duplicate device is in like manner secured at such distance from the first as may be required. Then, by adjusting the lower end of the second limb of the bracket in such bolt-hole of the bar as will bring it perpendicular and the bar 0 horizontal, it is secured by the screw-bolt to the bar 011 the roof. A plank or board is then put on the upper bars and the device is com- 1 pleted for use. In this feature of adj ustability rests the adaptability of the device to roofs of any pitch or slope.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a roof-bracket, the combination of a basebar, B, formed with a driving dog or spike and a flat base-piece, and provided with a series of holes and elongated slot, the bar D, with fastening-bolt, and the bar 0, with locking-button, substantially as described.
