Nl'lED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. TYLER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR T(-) HIMSELF AND HOWARD L. KREIDER, ()F SAME PLACE.
BILL-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,700, dated November 15, 1881. Application filed August 18, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. TYLER, of Indianapolis, in the county ofMarion and State of Indiana, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Bill-Piles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondiug' parts.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the filingof bills and other papers.
Theiuvention consists in abill-tile constructed of a spring-wire, having one or more ringcoils and one or more slotted elastic holders for paper-fasteners, whereby bills and other papers can be securely held and readily fastened together, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the base-plate, to which are attached, at suitable distances apart, elastic holders B. The forward parts of the spring-holders B are raised a little from the plate, to receive beneath them the heads of'ordinary paper-fasteners, O, and are slotted from their forward ends to receive the bodies of the said fasteners G.
D is a wire, the middle part of which has a 0 ring, E, or other handle formed upon or attached to it. The wire D, directly over each holder B, is bent into a ring-coil, F, having as its center the inner end of the slotin the.holder B, so that the coils F will press the papers 5 placed upon the fasteners 0 down around and hold them upon the'said fasteners O.
From the coils F the arms of the wire D extend back a suitable distance, and are then coiled to form springs G, which are secured to 40 the base A by staples H, or other suitable means, in such a manner that the tension of I the coils G will hold the ring-coils F pressed downward against the papers placed upon the fasteners C.
I are stops, which may be the heads oftacks 5 or screws, and which are attached to the base A in such positions that the spring-wire D will rest upon them, and thus be prevented from pressing the slotted ends of the holdersB downward, and thus clamping theheads of thefast- 5o eners O.
In using the file the fasteners (J are slipped into the elastic holders B,and the bills, letters,
and other papers to be filed are placed upon the said fasteners G, where they are held in place by the spring-wire D. At the end ofeach week or month, or as often as necessary, the spring-wire D is raised, the papers and fasteners are-drawn out, and the ends of the fasteners are bent down to hold the said papers together. Other fasteners C are then placed in the holders B, ready to receive other papers.
If desired, the files can be made with a single elastic holder, B, which in this case should be placed directly beneath the center of the wire D, and the ring'coil F should be formed upon the middlepartof the said wire D, directly beneath the handle E.
In using the double file one set of papers can be placed upon one of the fasteners G and another set upon the other fastener; or bothfasteners can be used forfilinga single set ofpapers.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt- In a bill-file having the bed A and fasteners O, the combination, with the elastic holders B, having slot and raised forward parts, as shown, of the wire D, bent overeach holder into 'aringcoil, F, and having as a center the inner end of the slot of the holder, for the purpose speci- 8o fled.
G H'ARLES M. TYLER.
