3 Claims.
The present .invention relates to new and useful improvements .in locks generally and more particularly to a keyless lock, commonly known as permutation or combination lock.
.An important object of the present invention is to provide a lock of this character including a plurality of rotatable permutation disks through which a locking bolt is axially slidable together with means forlocking the bolt in its projected position by a rotary movement of one or more of said disks, the bolt bein retractible upon a return of the disks to their originally set position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character including rotatable permutationdisks having the number combinations on the periphery thereof correspondin with internal radial slots into which locking pins carried by the bolt are received, the bolt being movable into its projected locking position by a setting of the numbers of the disks in any combination,
' whereby the combination may be changed each time the bolt is projected into its lockin position, if desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a 'keyless lock of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efiicientb and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise Well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings form ing part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a topplan view;
Figure 2 is an end elevational view;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a group perspective view showing a portion of the housing provided with the guide for one side of the locking pins removed;
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6--6 of Figure 5., and Figure 7 is an enlarged perspective View of the base.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, whereing for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the lock housin generally which includes a base 6 of substantially Y-shaped construction including a pair of spaced apart Parallel base members 8 and an extension I projecting from the connected ends of the parallel members. The pair of spaced parallel members 8 have transverse grooves 9 in the upper surface thereof and inwhich the lower end edges of flat upstanding separators I 0 are received and including an inner separator lfla suitably secured at the inner end of the extension I. The ends of the members 8 are closed by a plate H extending parallel to the separators and the ends of the separators and the ends of the plate II are enclosed in boxes l2 and I3 to secure the separators and plate H in assembled relation with respect to each other. The boxes 12 and 13 extend under the members 8 of the frame as shown more clearly in Figure 3 of the drawings and the top of the boxes overlie th upper edges of the separators and plate II.
The separators l0 and Illa are formed with aligned openings 14 aligned with an opening 15 in the plate H for vslidaloly.receiving a bolt I6 which is movable into and out of projectedposition .at the outer side of the plate II.
A plurality of permutation disks I! are positioned between the separators H] for free rotation on the bolt [6, the disks having scalloped peripheries to provide ribs l 8 and valleys l9 therebetween, the valleys having the combination numbers 20 marked or otherwise carried thereon. Each of the disks is formed with a plurality of internal radially BXtElldil'lg slots 2| extending outwardly from the central opening 22 of the disks, the slots being aligned radially with the ribs l-8 on the periphery thereof.
Each of the separators ID are also formed with a .slot 23 extending through its upper edge from the opening therein for aligning with one of the slots 2| of the disks.
An aligning bar'24 is supported in a horizontal elevated position above the slots 23 and transversely of the disks I] to provide a sighting alignment for the ribs of the disks with th slots 23 whereby to assure a proper alignment of the slots 23 with one of the slots 2| of the disks. The aligning bar 24 is supported atone end by a block 25 on the'upper edge of the plate IL The inner end of the bolt 16 is reduced as shown at .2-6 and mounted for free rotation thereon are "a plurality of rings 21 each having a locking pin 2 8v extending radially therefrom. The inner end of the bolt I6 is secured in a slide 28 by means of a pin or the like 30 and the slide is slidably mounted in a channel 31 rising from the extension I of the base, the channel being formed by an upstanding wall 32 at one side of the extension and an upstanding wall 33 adjacent the other side of the extension and inwardly from the adjacent edge thereof as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. The upper edge of the wall 32 is formed on its inner side with a guide channel 34 which overlies one side of theslide 29 and the guide channel 34 forms a guide at one side of the pinsZB.
The slide 29.is enclosed in a cover 35 which telescopes over the side wall 32 as well as over the opposite sid of the extension 1 and end thereof. A rib 36 extends downwardly from the inside of the cover for engagement in the channel 34 and a second rib 31 also extends downwardly from the top of the cover in parallelism with the rib 36 to form a guide for the pins 28 at the opposite side thereof. Th channel 34 and guide rib 31 thus maintain the pins 28 in an upstanding position for guiding the pins into the slots 23 of the separators l and into the slots 2l of the permutation disks IT.
The top of the cover 35 is also formed with a longitudinally extending slot 38 in which a handle 39 is slidably received, the handle extending upwardly from the slide 29 and is provided with a finger gripping knob 40 at its upper end.
In the operation of the device the bolt 16 is projected and retracted by the handle 39 and in order to project the bolt the permutation disks I! are set to form a desired combination of the numbers 20 by aligning the ribs ill of the selected numbers with the aligning bar 24 as shown in Figure l of the drawings.
The bolt l6,is then moved by the handle 39 into its projected position whereupon the looking pins 28 will pass through the slots 23 of the separators l0 and into the slots 2| of the respective permutation disks as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. Any one or all of the permutation disks l'l may then be rotated which thereby rotates the rings 21 carrying the pins 28 to move the pins 28 out of alignment with the slots 23 and the bolt is thus locked against retracting movement. n By returning the disks IT to their originally set position the pins 28 will then again be aligned with the slots 23 and the bolt may then be retracted.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings; it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though thereis herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A keyless lock comprising a housing, a bolt slidably mounted in the housing for projecting and retracting movement, a plurality of permutation disks rotatably carried by the bolt and having internal radial slots, separators between adjacent disks and at one end of the disks, each separator having a stationary slot aligned with each other and also aligned with one of the slots of the disks when the latter are held in a predetermined position, a plurality of rings rotatably mounted on the bolt and movable therewith axially of the disks, locking pins projecting radially from the rings for passing through the stationary slots and entering the radial slots of the respective disks upon a projecting movement of the bolt, any one of said pins being movable out of alignment with the stationary slots upon a predetermined rotation of its associated disk to lock the bolt against retracting movement, said pins being returned to an aligned position with the stationary slots upon a return of the disks to a set position,
manually operated means for projecting and retracting the bolt, and means providing a guide channel in the housing for the pins to maintain the pins in aligned position with the stationary slots when moved beyond the separators upon retracting movement of the bolt and to guide the pins in a position for reentering the slots upon a projecting movement of the bolt.
2. A keyless lock comprising a housing, a bolt slidably mounted in the housing for projecting and retracting movement, a plurality of per mutation disks rotatably carried by the bolt and having internal radial slots, means providing a stationary guide slot in the housing aligned with one of the slots of the disks when the latter are held in a predetermined position, a plurality of rings rotatably mounted on the bolt and movable therewith axially of the disks, locking pins projecting radially from the rings for passing through the stationary slot and entering the radial slots of the disks upon a projecting movement of the bolt, any one of said pins being movable out of alignment with the stationary slot upon a predetermined rotation of its associated disk to lock the bolt against retracting movement, said disks having aligning elements on the periphery thereof for indicating the position of the respective radial slots, and an aligning bar carried by the housing and extending transversely of the periphery of the disks, said bar being in alignment with the stationary slot.
3. A keyless lock comprising a housing, a bolt slidab-ly mounted in the housing for projecting and retracting movement, a plurality of permutation disks rotatably carried by the bolt and having internal radial slots, separators between adjacent disks and at one end of the disks, each separator having a stationary slot aligned with each other and also aligned with one of the slots of the disks when the latter are held in a predetermined position, a plurality of rings rotatably mounted on the bolt and movable therewith axially of the disks, locking pins projecting radially from the rings for passing through the stationary slots and entering the radial slots of the respective disks upon a projecting move ment of the bolt, anyone of said pins being movable out of alignment with the stationary slots upon a predetermined rotation of its associated disk to lock the bolt against retracting movement, said pins being returned to an aligned position with the stationary slots upon a return of the disks to a set position, a slide secured to the rear end of the bolt,-a guide for the slide including a rectangular housing having a longitudinal slot, a handle carried by the slide working in the last-named slot, and means providing a guide channel in the housing for said pins to maintain the pins in aligned position with the stationary slots 'when moved beyond the separators upon retracting movement of the bolt and to guide the pins in a position for reentering the slots upon a projecting movement of the bolt.
