42Claims. 1
This invention relates to a novel tool inA the form of a clamp adapted to be used ln combination with a conventional pair of pliers for detach-- ably supporting a hacksaw blade for executing a conventional operation with the blade.
More particularly, it is an aim of the` invention to provide a blade holder or clamp of extremely simple construction and which is. capable ofY being conveniently used for supporting a hacksaw blade for executing a cutting` operation; in an inaccessible location where ay conventional hacksaw frame could not beaccommodated.
4Still a further object. of thel invention is to provide a holder or clampl which is so constructed and arranged that blades of different widthsx may be mounted therein and be positionedron either side of a pair of pliers, engaging the clamp, and with the teeth of the clamped hacksaw blade facing either upwardly or downwardly for thereby accommodating the tool for operation in inaccessible places where other saws could not be employed.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a blade holder or clamp possessing the above described characteristics, and which isl capable of being economically manufactured and sold, and which will be extremely durable and eicient in operation for its intended function.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment 'thereof and wherein:
Figure l is a side elevational View, showing the clamp in an operative position engaged in the jaws of a pair of pliers and engaging an end of conventional hacksaw blade;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is an end view in elevation thereof, taken in a transverse plane through the saw blade as indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure l is an enlarged perspective View of the blade holder or clamp;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated bythe line 5-5 of Figure 2, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the blank from which the holder or clamp is formed.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the blade holder or clamp in its entirety is designated generally 'l and to illustrate the adaptation and use thereof, a conventional pair of pliers is shown and designated generally 8 and a portion of a conventional hacksaw blade is indicated at 9. The pliers 8 and blade 9 Aform no part of the present invention, but as they are utilized in conjunction therewith, these parts have been illustrated in the drawing to better disclose the application and use of the holder or clamp 1.
The holder or clamp I is formed from a single blank of tempered steel, as,Y indicated in Figure` y posed beyond the inner ends thereof.
The, jaws II' and l2 are provided, adjacent corresponding longitudinal edges thereof, with outwardly pressed portions. forming relatively shallow inwardly opening opposed channels or grooves I5 and I6, respectively. The opposite side edges of the jaws II andy l2 are likewise pressed outwardly to form opposed inwardly opening. channels or grooves Il and I8, respectively, which are substantially deeper than the grooves I5 and IG, and which are likewise disposed in inwardly opening, opposed relationship. The. intermediate, loop portion i4 is provided with wings; or extensions i9 which may be utilized in positioning the loop portion Ill between the jaws 20 of the pliers 8.
As best illustrated in Figure l, the jaws 20 of the pliers 8 are of conventional shape having concave, opposed serrated faces between which the loop portion I4is adapted to be disposed, and it will be readily apparent from a consideration of Figure 1, that the intermediate, arcuate part of the loop portion I4 is contoured to substantially conform to the curvature of the serrated faces of the jaws 20, so as to fit snugly therebetween and to be effectively engaged thereby. An end of the hacksaw blade 9, which may be a broken blade, no longer capable of use in a hacksaw frame, is adapted to be positioned with its toothed edge in one of the channels I5, I6, I1 or I8 and with its back edge in the channel, disposed in opposed relationship thereto, so that when a pressure is exerted on the handle end of the pliers 8, the jaws 20 will be moved toward closed positions to compress the loop portion I4 to thereby move the jaws II and I2 toward one another for clamping said end of the blade 9 in the channels or grooves, engaged thereby. It will clamp which is in turn engaged by the Pliers 8, 5
so that the user by grasping the pliers handles may execute a sawing operation with the blades 9 in inaccessible locations, where a hacksaw frame could notbe accommodated. It will likewise be readily apparent that the blade e could be ml, y verted from its position ofFigures 1 and 2, so that 1- the toothed edge thereof would facejupwargily and be disposed in the groove I3r instead of in the groove or channel II, as illustrated. Likewise, it
will be readily obvious that'the clam'pA l could 1 be rotated a half-turn on its longitudinal axis and positioned in the pliers 8 for positioning the clamping grooves Il and I8 on the other side o'f` thepliers 8 for mounting the saw blade 9 on the -opposite side of the pliers to its position as illus- 20 trated in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
Grooves I5 and i6 are made shallower so that the distance between the beds of the grooves I5 l and I 6 will be less than the distance between the 25 beds of the grooves II and I8 for Iaccommodating saw blades in said rst mentioned grooves which are narrower than the saw blade 9, thus adapting the holder or clamp 'l for use with saw blades of at least two widths.
depth of the grooves thereof may be varied for use with saw blades of hacksaws of any standard size.
VVariousrother modifications and changes are 35 likewise contemplated and may obviouslyfbe resorted to without departing from theY spirit` and `scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.
I claim: 'l 1. In a blade holder or clamp, a pair of opposed, spaced jaws provided with opposed, channel portions or grooves which are oiset from the yplanes of the jaws in directions away from one another and which open toward oneanother for accommodating the'longitudinal edges of a hacksaw blade in said grooves'or channel portionsVand .a loop portion, having ends connected to the inner ends of said jaws for supporting said jaws in Likewise, it will be readily 30 apparent that the size of the holder 'I and the normally spaced apart relationship, said loop portion being adapted to be engaged and clamped between the jaws of a pair of pliers and the blade holding jaws being engaged by the plier jaws for moving said blade holder jaws toward one another and into clamping engagement with the hacksaw blade when said loop portion is compressed by closing movement of the pliers jaws. I
2."A vblade holder or clamp as in claim 1, said 0 grooves or channel portions being disposed adjacent the side edges and longitudinally of the clampjaws whereby said clamp may be inverted 1 with respect to the jaws of the pliers for posi- U1tioning the saw blade on either side of the pliers 3. Ina blade holder or clamp, a pair of spaced jaws provided with outwardly offset inwardly opening grooves adapted to engage the edge portions of an end of a hacksaw blade, and a resilient loop portion having end portions connected to corresponding ends of said jaws for resiliently supporting the jaws relatively to one another, said jaws having longitudinally extending flat surfaces disposed on corresponding sides of the grooves adapted to be engaged between the jaws of a pair of pliers, forming a handle for the blade holder, said pliers jaws being movable toward closed positions for moving the blade holder jaws into clamping engagement with the edge portions of the hacksaw blade.
4. A blade' holder or clamp as in claim l, said blade holder jaws each comprising a plate having an outwardly projecting longitudinally extending portion forming said inwardly opening channel or groove.
