(01. 139-1830 The present invention pertains-to shuttlezboxes for fly shuttle loomsand moreparticularlyto the box plates for such shuttle boxes.
The shuttle boxes located at the endsof the lay comprise front andback elongated box-plates fixed to the-lay and-eaehldefining ashuttle guiding surface. Each of the picker sticks moves in a slotted space at its-respective end .of the lay and within the shuttle box to impart motion -to the shuttle. "The shuttle-boxes-guidetheshuttle as it'is thrown across the lay and also act to gradually retard its motion asl it'enters the boxes.
One object ofthe presen-t invention is to provide an improvement in-box platesand especiallyin the construction of the 'front boxrplate to afiord better checking and control-of-the shuttle, and straighter, smoother and steadier shuttle flight with minimum of ekeelingand less wear of the shuttle.
Various other objectso-f the present invention will be apparent from the followingparticular description and from an inspection of the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring to Figs. 1-4 of the drawing, there is shown some of the shuttle box structure on the right hand or magazine side of the loom. The shuttle box III on this side of the loom is secured to the lay end plate II by bolts as will be described and comprises a front plate l2 and a rear or back plate l3 spaced to receive the conventional shuttle l4 therebetween. The rear box plate l3 has its main body of metal and has on its inner face a shuttle guiding surface l5. Affixed to the plate l3 by means of bolts I6 is a metal ledge plate 11 which projects beyond the inner surface I5 of the box plate 13 and serves as a guide: to confine the shuttle :14 itsimovement into. the. shuttle box .110; The shuttle guide rplate H has .alining [8 of leather or .similarwflexlble material in a recess thereof.
The back box plate l3 may have. the usual pivoted spring-pressed binder for protector mot-ion control.
The front box plated comprises-an elongated metalbody .z'fli desirablyin the form of a casting having .a base flange :21, seated :on .the slay-end plate .H, and a boss-2:2 near loneend withan elongated ,opening :2 3: for receiyin-g a bolt (*not shown). for adjustably-:fasteningone end :of said boxeplate to the-lay. The front box plate .I 2 has thensual elongated recess 30 serving aswafithreadscutter slot through which a .thread cutter is adapted: to operate to cut. the thread-a'from the spent bobbin prior toit's ejection efnom: the :shuttle.
The front .:box plate 42- is lined with the usual shuttle-guiding material'3l made for example of leatherv or other similar -flexi'ble cushioning materialland. slotted to clear-the-pla;terecess30; The lining 3 1 :is. stretched ataut' and is=secured to the inner face of the inner front box plate l-i-" by cement .or suitable fastening-elements such" as rivets.
As a 'feature of thepresent inventiomthe front boxrpla-te -l 2 'iseons'tructed to effect better -checking and control of the'shuttle in thebox, straighter, smoother and steadier shuttle flight and less wear on the shuttle. To thatwendlthe intermediate section of theeplatebody 2 0 "-has a top *flange 32 with a top recess 33, and seated on this flange is a metal ledge plate 34 secured to said flange by bolts 35 and extending inwardly beyond the leather lining 3| to form a guide for confining the shuttle I4 in its movement into and out of the box It and maintaining it against keeling during this movement. The guide plate 34 has a recess 36 receiving a suitable flexible lining material 31'such as leather secured thereto by rivets 38.
The flange 32 may be reinforced by a rib 4!] integral with and extending between the two flanges 32 and 2| beyond the thread cutter slot 30 and has integral therewith at one end a rounded projection 4| around which a portion of the leather lining 3| is wrapped. The wrapped portion of the leather lining 3| is secured to the projection 4| by cementing or the like.
The recess 33 along the top plate flange 32 serves to define a clearance between the lower face of the lining 31 and the upper edge of the lining 3| and desirably extends on its outer longitudinal side outwardly beyond the outer longitudinal edge of said lining 31. This clearance is desirable to permit easy assembly and to prevent the leather linings from gathering at the corner therebetween after a period of operation.
In the-operation the guide plates I! and 34 serve to right the shuttle Hi about its longitudinal axis in case said shuttle should be riding on one edge as it enters the shuttle box and serve to guide the shuttle properly into'said box and to maintain it in flat stable resting position on the lay as it moves intosaid box and as it is propelled from said box and across the lay during picking operations. "j Y The guide linings I8 and 31 are at such a height that they clear the top of the shuttle [4.
Figs. 5 and 6 show the front box plate 50 on the lefthand side of the'loom. This front box plate is somewhat similar to the front box plate on the right or magazine side of the loom and diifers mainly therefrom in the provision of a slot for thefilling feeler.
g The: front box plate 56 comprises an 'elongatedmetal body 5! having a lining 52 of leather or'similar cushioning material and provided with an elongated slot 53 for the operation of the usual filling feeler therethrough by which substantial exhaustion of filling on the bobbin is detected. Lining 52 is held in place by rivets 59. The plate body 5| has a base flange 54 and bosses 55 adapted to receive suitable bolts for attachment to the lay end plate. A top flange 56 on the plate body 5! has a recess 51 and supports a metal shuttle guide plate. 58 secured to said flange by bolts 60. A recess 6| in the guide plate 58 holds a lining 62 of leather or similar cushioning material by means of rivets 63.
I :The back box plate (not shown) cooperating with; the front box plate 50 on the left hand side of the loom is similar to the back box plate l3 on the right hand side of the loom and the two box plates on the left side with their top guide plates operate to guide and maintain the shuttle in proper position, as described in connection with the box plates on the right hand side of the loom.
While the invention has been described with particular reference to a specific embodiment, it is to be understood that it is not limited thereto but is to be construed broadly and strictly solely by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A front box plate for a loom comprising an elongated metal body having an inner upright face and a recess on its inner upperside, a lining of cushioning material secured to said face and presented an upright shuttle guide surface extending therealong, a metal guide plate secured to the top of said metal body and projecting inwardly from said surface,'said plate having a recess on its inner'underside, and a lining of cushioning material in said latter; recess presenting on its underside a shuttleguide surface transverse to said upright guide surface and spaced above the upper edge of said first mentioned lining as a result of said first mentioned recess.
2. A front box plate for a loom, comprising an elongated metal member having a bottom horizontal web extending the length thereof and formed with a horizontal fiat bottom surface adapted to bear on the top surface of a bottom box plate, a vertical web united to said bottom web and extending the length of said elongated member, said vertical web being formed-with a vertical shuttle guiding surface and being provided with an inclined thread slot having an open upper end, and a top horizontal web united to said vertical web and extending from a point proximate one end of said elongated member to the open end of said slot, said top horizontal Web having a stepped top surface comprising two vertically spaced horizontal surfaces, the lower of said spaced surfaces intersecting said vertical guiding surface, a metal guide plate on the upper of said spaced surfaces secured to said top horizontal web and extending substantially the length of said top horizontal web, said guide plate extending inwardly from said vertical guiding surface and having a recess in its extending under side, a lining of cushioningmaterial in said recess, a lining of cushioning material covering said vertical shuttle guiding surfaces and terminating at the top edge thereof whereby the shuttle contact surfaces defined by said cushioning material are separated by a distance substantially equal to the vertical distance between said vertically spaced horizontal surfaces.
