The rear end walls of the slots limit the sliding movement of the part 29 to its retracted position. The springs 22 and 25 limit the out- Ward sliding movement of the part 29 to its ad- Vanced position. The pin 35 as disposed in the slots I7 and I8 prevent the part 29 from turning on the rod assuring coaction of the cam means 32 with the end 21 of the clamping member 20.

In accordance with the invention and as an important new feature in conjunction with the pivoted jaw I2, there is provided manipulatable means which is carried by the part 29 for the purpose of moving the jaw I2 into its open position and holding it therein while the part 29 is in its retracted position. Said manipulatable means consists of an actuator 36 pivotally mounted, as at 31, on a iiange 38 on the part 29. 'Ihe actuator 39 is disposed in a notch in the flange 38 and extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the rod I and also parallel to the slot I 1. The actuator 3S has a head end 39 with a bill 40, and a tail end 4I. The part 29 has a hole 42 therein to accommodate the bill 4i), so that the latter may bear on the end portion Id of the jaw I2, when the head end 39 of the actuator is manipulated with the thumb or foreiinger. This will cause the jaw I2 to move into its open position as shown in Fig. 3. The abutment 39 has a small socket therein in which is arranged a small expansion coil spring 43 which presses yon a ball 44. The spring 43 and the ball 44 constitute a detent. The head end 39 has a depression 45 therein `which receives the ball 44 when the actuator 36 :is moved into a position to open the jaw I2. Said end 39 also has a small depression 46 therein :which receives the ball 44 when the actuator is .moved into a position to enable the spring 22 to move the jaw I2 into its closed position. This is .accomplished by pressing on the tail end 4I of the actuator 35. The detent releasably retains the actuator 36 in either of its two positions.

The abutment 3II has a segmental recess 41 therein to allow the jaw I2 to be fully opened, and the wall of the recess limits the opening movement of the jaw I2. The Wall of the recess 41, or the shoulder I5, prevent the part 29 from being carelessly slid outward when the jaw I2 is open, as will appear from Fig. 3.

The clamping member 23 is mainly relied upon to exert the clamping pressure on the hair. The jaw I2 is opened by pressing on the head end 39 of the actuator 36. This enables the ends of a strand of hair to be brought between the jaw I2 and the clamping member 25 which is in a clamping position under the influence of its spring 25. The jaw I2 is moved to its closed position by the spring 22 after the actuator 36 is manipulated by pressing on its tail end 4 I. The member '29 clamps the hair against the jaw I2 after which the device is rotated to form a curl on the outer surfaces of the jaw I I and I2 backed by the abutment 30, The curl is then pinned by a suitable pin. After the curl has been formed, the user while holding the rod I3 with one hand slides the part 29 along the rod I with the other hand from its retracted position. This causes the means 32 to cam the end portion 2l, and as a result the clamping member 23 is moved outwardly on its pivot releasing the curl. At the same time the part 29 pushes or removes the curl from the jaws thereby separating the device from the hair.

By reason of the movable jaw I?. the present device may be used by persons desiring to curl their own hair, since it is easy to insert the hair when the. jaw is open. The device having the features described enables a person to easily and conveniently perform the necessary operations in making any number of curls.

I claim:

l. A hair curler including a rod having a xed jaw and a pivoted jaw on one end providing means on which hair may be wound to form a curl, a spring actuated clamping member carried by the xed jaw which cooperates with the pivoted jaw to clamp the hair for the purpose of forming a curl, said pivoted jaw being movable between a hair clamping position and a hair unclamping position, resilient means causing the movement of the pivoted jaw into its clamping position, and manipulatable means to move the pivoted jaw into its unclamping position.

A hair curler as set forth inclaim 1, a slidable member on the rod, said slidable member carrying the manipulatable means, cam means on said slidable member to actuate the clamping member to release the curl upon movement of the slidable member, and an abutment on the slidable member to remove the formed curl from the jaws upon continuing the movement of the slidable member.

3. A hair curler as set forth in claim l, wherein said manipulatable means consists of a pivoted actuator in cooperative relation to the pivoted jaw.

A hair curler including a rod having a xed jaw and a pivoted jaw on one end providing means on which hair may be wound to form a curl, said pivoted jaw being movable between a hair clamping position and a hair unclamping position, means on the fixed jaw to releasably clamp the hair against the movable jaw when the latter is in the clamping position, a slidable member on said rod, a manipulatable member carried by the slidable member to move the pivoted jaw into its unclamping position, resilient means to move the pivoted jaw into its clamping position, said slidable member being movable by the user with one hand while the rod is held with the other hand to remove the formed curl from the jaws.

In a hair curler, a rod longitudinally divided into cooperative jaws on one end on which hair maybe wound to form a curl, one of said jaws pivoted to the rod for movement into an open position and a closed hair clamping position, means on the other jaw to releasably clamp the hair against the pivoted jaw when the latter isl in the closed position, and an axially movable member on the rod to push the formed curl from the `jaws.

In a hair curler, a rod longitudinally divided into cooperative jaws on one end on which hair may be wound to form a curl, one of said jaws pivoted to the rod for movement into an open position and a closed hair clamping position, means on the other jaw to releasably clamp the hair against the pivoted jaw when the latter is in the closed position, and an axially movable member on the rod to push the formed curl from the jaws when the curl is released, said means' being actuated by said member to release the curl at the beginning of its movement in removing the curl.

7. In a hair curler, a rod round in cross section having an extended portion provided with a longi` tudinal slot and an element pivoted to the rod and combining with the extended portion to provide opposed jaws, said jaws providing means on which a strand of hair on a persons head may be wound into a curl whilethe ends of said strand are disposed in said slot, hair clamping means operatively arranged in the longitudinal slot, said hair clamping means cooperating with the pivoted element clamping the ends of the strand against said element, so that the strand may be wound on said rst means forming it into a curl by rotating the rod.

8. In a hair curler as set forth in claim 7, wherein said clamping means consists of a spring pressed pivoted member.

9. In a hair curler as set forth in claim 7, and a manipulatable slidable member on the rod having means which releases the clamping means and means which pushes the formed curl from the jaws upon manipulation of the slidable member.

In a hair curler, a rod having a fixed jaw and a pivoted jaw on one end providing means on which hair may be wound to form a curl, the xed jaw having a longitudinal slot therein, and a spring actuated clamping member operatively arranged in said slot and pivotally connected with the rod so as to cooperate with the pivoted jaw 'while the latter is in a closed position to clamp the hair for the purpose of forming a curl on said rst means, said pivoted jaw being movable into an open position to facilitate placement of the .ends of the strand of hair between the jaws.

11. In a hair curler as set forth in claim 6, and manipulatable means to releasably retain the pivoted jaw in the open position,
