Description

Dec. 0, i949 m11. m. DUNN CIGARETTE CASE AND SHEAR Filed Sept. 5, 194'? Patented Dec. 20, 1949 UNITED STATES' egreNT NOFFICE IGA-,T'E CASE AND SHEAR .l ames junn, Hyde Park; Massi Application September 5, 1947, Serial No. 772,388
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a combined cigarette case and shear.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a cigarette case with a shear thereon by which the cigarette can be cut into short lengths depending upon thedesire of the user so that in the end a saving of cigarettes will be effected and wherein this shear is provided upon the cigarette case itself.
It is another object of the present invention to provide in a combined cigarette case and shear, an opening in which a cigarette holder can be disposed and which is adapted to handle short lengths of cigarettes so that by using a holder with the small lengths of cigarettes which are sheared, a still greater saving of cigarettes can be effected.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a combined cigarette case and shear which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevational view with a portion broken away and shown in section to show the interior of the cigarette case and the operating parts of the shear associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 1 with the shear extended to the outer position and about to be thrust through a cigarette to cut off a portion of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, with the shear pulled out.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view similar to Fig. 3, with the shear slid inwardly, in position to receive the cigarette holder.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a transverse cross-sectional view taken on line 5 6 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the shear separated from the case.
Referring now to the figures, I0 represents a main casing which is crimped as indicated at I I adjacent its upper end to provide a stop for a. -cover I2 which may be inserted over the upper end. Within this case is a partition I3 and a vpartition I4 providing for a chamber I5 in which Va cigarette holder I6 may be disposed or kept.
Beneath the cover I2 and slidable across the top of the case ID is a shear or slide I'I having a knife edge I8 thereon and a handle portion I9. 'The knife edge I8 is inclined to effect a shearing action upon the cigarette. The cigarette will be held in the end compartment 2| while the cutting operation is effected. Within the shear or slide I is a square hole 22 adapted to register with chamber I5 Within which the cigarette holder i5 is disposed. Through this hole 22, the cigarette holder can be extracted. The cover I2 is provided with a guide support 25 for supporting the shear or slide I1. The shear slide Ill is confined between the top part of the cover and the guide support 25. The top part is indicated at 2B. The handle portion I9, as the shear or slide 'l is injected into the cover I2 to the full extent, will close the end compartment 2| and chamber I5 whereby to retain Within the end compartment and chamber the cigarette holder and any cigarettes which may be disposed within the end compartment 2|. To remove the cigarette holder, the shear or slide I1 is pulled outwardly so that the hole 22 thereon will register with the top of the chamber I5. Thereafter the cigarette holder may be dropped out. The shear or slide I1, before cutting the cigarette, will at rst be withdrawn to a position as shown in Fig. 3. To cut the cigarette, the shear or slide Il* is pushed inwardly until the knife edge IS has passed over the top of the end compartment 2I in which is contained the cigarette to be sheared. The cigarette is indicated at 21.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as dened by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A combined cigarette case and Shearer comprising a main casing adapted to house cigarettes, a cover adapted to be extended over the casing at the open end thereof, said cover being removable to gain access to the cigarettes, said casing having an end compartment adapted to contain a cigarette, a shear or slide adjustable in the cover over the top of the end compartment whereby as the cigarette is pulled partly out of the same a shearing action can be effected upon it to sever it, and a chamber adjacent the end compartment in which the cigarette is contained while being cut adapted to contain a cigarette holder, said shear or slide having an opening therein adapted to register with the top of the chamber and through which the cigarette holder may be extracted without the removal of the shear or slide from the cover.
2. A combined cigarette case and Shearer comprising a main casing adapted `to house oigarettes, a cover adapted to be extended over the casing at the open end thereof, said cover being removable to gain access to the cigarettes, said casing having an end compartment adapted to contain a cigarette, a shear or slide adjustable in the cover over the top of the end compartment whereby as the cigarette is pulled partly out of the same a shearing action can be effected upon it to sever it, and a chamber adjacent the end compartment in which the cigarette is contained While being cut adapted to contain a cigarette holder, said shear or slide having an opening therein adapted to register with the top of the chamber and through which the cigarette holder may be extracted without the removal of the shear or slide from the cover, said shear or slide REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
