1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a sash lock which may be used to ventilate a room without permitting the window to be opened from the outside by an unauthorized person.
An object of the invention is to provide a sash lock comprising a latch which is adapted to be secured to one sash of a Window and adapted to engage apertures in a latch plate secured to the other sash of the window.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock that is simple in construction, durable in use, emcient in operation and economical to manufacture.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts lmore fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevationa1 view of an embodiment of the invention as applied to the sash in a window.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the latch plate:
Figure 3 is a perspective view partly broken away of the latch;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure l;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the latch as applied to a window;
Figure 6 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the latch handle;
Figure 7 is a sectional view on the line 1-1 of Figure 4 and Figure 8 is a bottom plan view of the latch.
Referring more in detail to the drawings the reference numeral Ill designates the window frame and I2 and I4 the Window sash slidably mounted therein.
Secured to the upper sash I2 by fasteners I6 is the plate I8 having the raised channel portion 2|] in which are provided relatively spaced square shaped apertures 22. The plate as shown is attached to the face of the sash frame.
Positioned in coacting relation with the plate I8 on the upper edge of the sash I4 is the latch 24 having the casing 26 which is pressed or mouldedv in one piece.
Removably tted over the casing 26 is the cap 33 vlfliwh. is retained thereon by the fastener 30.
The bolt 32 which is slidably mounted in the casing 26 comprises the parallel bars 34 which are bridged inwardly of their ends by the parallel bars 36 and 38 respectively, arranged at right angles to the bars 34. The undersurface of the bar 36 is arcuate shaped at 4|) to permit operation of the key 42 which has a blade 44 having a reduced shoulder portion 46 thereon which contacts the inner sides of the bars 34 and a very small portion of the arcuate shaped face 40 of the bar 36. The blade 44 engaging the upper surface of the bolt 32 retains the bolt in sliding engagement with the bottom of the casing 26.
The key 42 has a stem 48 on which is mounted by means of the screw 50 entering the threaded bore 52 of the stem 48 a handle 54 and a boss 56 on the undersurface of the key 42 is received in the bore 58 in the base plate 60 of the casing 26.
The bolt 32 is provided on one of the bars 34 with the tongue 62 which emerges from the openings 64 in the cap and casing to engage the apertures 22 in the plate I8 and guide openings 66 arranged at right angles to the bolt 32 are adapted to receive the fastener 30 so that the fastener 30 is positioned in the recesses 68 formed by the inward mounting of the bars 36 and 38 are secured to the base plate 60.
It will be noticed in Figures 4 and 8 that the base plate 6D is provided with lugs or legs 'I0 at each corner which raise the base plate from the sash and prevents binding of the bolt on the edge of the sash.
It will be noted in Figures 3 and 4 that two parallel related lugs 12 are secured to the rear of the casing opposite to the tongue 62 under which the bolt slides when it is disengaged from the plate I8 and these lugs retain the bolt in position, when handling or packing.
It is believed that the operation and construction of the lock will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described, comprising a bolt having a casing adapted to rest on top of a Window sash, said bolt comprising a rectangular shaped body, a tongue formed on one side of said bolt extending outwardly from said casing, a recess having an arcuate shaped end formed in said body, recesses in the opposite ends of said body to permit a fastener to pass through said casing to secure said casing to said Window sash, a key having a stem, a blade portion on said stem, a shoulder portion on said blade portion adapted to engage the inner sides of said recess and a small portion of the arcuate shaped end of said recess for the movement of said bolt, and said bladesportionjoverlying said bolt to retain said bolt in horizontal relation to said casing and in engagement with the bottom of the casing to guide the movement of said bolt during the operation of said bolt, and lugs positioned at the opposite rear corners of the casing to receive the bolt as it is Withdrawn into the casing.
