PLATE AND SPIRAL SPRING FOR BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,090, dated November 1, 1881.

exact description ofthe invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in spiral springs and plates; and its object is to provide a spring for beds land sofas that will secure uniformity ot pressure, will be held firmly in place, and without tendency to spread.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top view; Fig. 2, a side view; and Fig. 3, a vertical sectional elevation ot'Fig. 2, taken on the lineyy.
A A are two spiral springs, constructed in the ordinary manner, secured to the bed-plate B, and connected at the top by the curved wire a, as shown.
D is the plate. It is made in the t'orm of a double hook, connected and strengthened by the braces d. It is placed upon the top ofand between the springs A Aand fastened in any secure manner by hooks,as shown at e, Fig. 3. It is made slightly concave to secure firmer In placing the plate upon the springs the ends d will conform to the curvature of the upper and outer wires, a', of the spiral springs, the lower end resting upon and secured to the brace 0l, as shown.
By the use of the. plate D the springs A A are held rmly together, and a less number of them may be used without causing inconvenience to the person. By its use, also, a larger and more continuous spring-surface is presented for pressure by the mattress.
When in use upon a bed or sofa the springs may be fastened or connected in complets by mea-ns of connecting Wires or braces, in amanner well known to artisans, and thus may be secured a perfect spring-bed entirely freefrom the irregularities common to beds of ordinary construction.
Havingdescribed myinvention,whatIclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The double-hook-shaped plate D, provided with braces d, and placed upon the springs A A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In a spiral bed or sofa spring, the cornbination of the plate D with the springs A A, arranged and operating as described.
