Application June 5, 1947, Serial No. 752,591
3 Claims. (01. 2-2) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in shoulder pads and more particularly to an article of this character constructed to be worn on the outside of a garment and to relieve the strain or discomfort subjected to the shoulder by the strap of a golf bag or other object when suspended from the shoulder of a person.
An important object of the invention is to provide a pair of shoulder pads of this character to be worn on both shoulders of a person together with body straps connecting the respective pads to each other to hold the same against displacement on the shoulder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pad of this character which may be worn on either shoulder and secured in position by means independently of the pad worn on the other shoulder.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view showing a pair of the pads in position while being worn.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the pads.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the attaching straps.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of this invention the numeral 5 designates the pad generally and which is constructed of a top cover 6 preferably of soft rubber, leather or other suitable material and a lining l at the underside of the pad which may to hold the filler 8 in place'and to prevent the working of the filler toward one edge of the pad.
The pad 5 is cupped at its underside to conform to the shape of the shoulder of a person and the outer edge of the pad is feathered as shown at it! while the inner edge of the pad, at its upper surface, is raised as shown at II to prevent the working of a carrying strap l2 of a. golf bag H from working inwardly of the pad against the neck of the wearer.
A beading or rib I4 is constructed to extend transversely of the pad adjacent its outer end to hold the strap 12 against sliding off of the pad. The beading or rib I4 is preferably constructed by folding the cover 6 and sewing the same to' provide a casing l5 in which a core i6 is secured. The core may be of either rigid or flexible material.
Metal snaps II are provided at the inner lower corners of the pad and to which the end of a body attaching strap i8 is attached, the strap [8 extending across the chest and back of the wearer and under the arm pit at an opposite side of the body as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
It will also be apparent from an inspection of Figure 1 of the drawings, that one of the pads may be placed on each of the shoulders of a person and secured in position by separate body straps l8.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages, of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: I
1. In a shoulder pad, a cover of flexible material having a filler therein, a casing on top of the cover adjacent its outer edge and formed of the cover material to provide a transverse rib on the upper surface of the pad adjacent its outer edge to hold a carrying strap placed over the pad against lateral sliding movement on a persons shoulder, and a body attaching strap for said pad.
2. In a shoulder pad, a cupped member including a cover of flexible material having a filler,
upstanding portions on the upper surface of the pad adjacent its inner and outer edges to hold a carrying strap placed over the pad against lateral sliding movement on a persons shoulder, and a body attaching strap for said pad, said inner upstanding portion comprising a raised lip on the inner edge of the pad and said outer upstanding portion comprising a transverse casing formed of the cover material, and a. core in the casing.
3. A shoulder pad of concave-convex form, and comprising a cover of flexible material having a filler therein, a transversely extending casing ads jacent the outer edge of the pad and formed of the cover material, a core in the casing to, provide a rib on the upper surface of the pad adjacent its outer edge to hold a carrying strap on the pad, and a body attaching strap secured to the lower inner edges of the pad.
