WAGON-STAKE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,708, dated October 25, 1881.

Be it known that I, EUGENE F. CHAPMAN, of Scribner, in the countyof Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WV-agon Stakes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a wagon-stake and attachment, which attachment may be arranged in va-riouspositions for supporting sideboards and racks, and for supporting a temporary cover for the wagon.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of front and rear bolsters and wagon-box, showing my improved stake, the forward stake being shown arranged for the ordinary box, the rear stake being shown arranged for supporting one-half of a temporary cover. Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the parts of the stake arranged for holding a rack. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the parts arranged for holding sideboards. Fig. A is also a side elevation, partly in section, showingthe parts arranged for holding the ordinary wagon-box. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 6 is a crosssection taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 5.

In the drawings, A represents the stake proper, which is preferably formed with the shoe A at the bottom for fitting upon the end of the bolsters, as shown in Fig. 1. This shoe extends a suitable distance in frontof the face of the stake, so that the bottom of the wagonbox rests upon it and to permit the passage of the bolt to through this portion of the shoe and through the bolster for securing the stake firmly in place. Other means for securing the stake to the bolster might be devised; but this is the preferred means.

The upright portion A of the stake is chambered out, as shown at c, Fig. 6, for inclosing the vertically-movable extension or attachment B. This extension or attachment is formed at its upper end with the hook I), which fits over the edge of the box, as shown in Fig. 1, when the extension is wholly inclosed in the chamber 0 of the stake. The back of the extension is formed with the pivot-holes t, i,

and i, by means of which the same is adapted to be supported in various positions by the connecting rod or brace U, the ends of the connecting-rod being provided with the pivotholes 0 c, and the back of the stake with the pivot-holes 6, e, and e, for that purpose.

In order to hold the extension B for supporting a hay or straw rack, the extension should be entirel withdrawn from the chamber of the stake and the lower end of it keyed to the upper end of the stake, as shown in Fig. 2, the brace 0 being then keyed to the center of the extension and to the lower pivothole in the back of the stake. From this position, in order to adapt the extension for holding side-boards upon the box, it is only necessary to raise the brace G and key its lower end to the pivot-hole e in the back of the stake, as shown in Fig. 3.

When the parts are to be arranged for supporting a temporary cover over the box or wagon the extension should be lowered into the chamber of the stake, and the upper end of the brace should be keyed to the upper end of the extension, and the body of the same turned horizontally over the box, as shown in Fig. 1, in which position it can be keyed to the end of the extension of the opposite stake, or

supported upon a center piece placed upon the box. When the extension is lowered into the stake for holding the ordinary box it is held in that position by the brace being keyed to its upper end and to the lower pivot-hole in the stake, as shown in Fig. 4.

The extension B is held against lateral displacement from the chamber of the stake when in a vertical position and guided in its vertical movement in the chamber of the stake by means of the stops it h, secured in the front face of the stake, which are received in the grooves h h, formed in the extension, as shown in Fig. 5.
