C. PLOW BOTTO ARTS AND MEANS FOR S C RING THEM SADD THE SUPPORTING Filed Feb. 9, 1946 v i2 l 17 @ggf/mur F1612 INVENTOR CAROLUS L, EKSERGMN ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 1, 1949 PLOW BOTTOM PARTS AND MEANS FOR SECURING THEM TO THE SUPPORTING SADDLE Carolus L. Eksergian, Detroit, Mich., assigner to The Budd Company, Philadelphia, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application February 9, 1946, Serial No. 646,523 2 Claims. (Cl. 97-113) This invention relates to plow bottom parts and means for securing them to the supporting saddle and has for an object the provision of improvements in this art.
One of the particular objects of the invention is to provide plow parts which can be quickly tted to adjacent parts to which they are to be attached.
Another object is to provide an easy method of fitting plow parts to a support.
The above and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description of an illustrative embodiment, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top view of a plow bottom embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
The plow bottom with which the present invention is particularly concerned comprises a saddle I0, a moldboard Il, a share I2, and a landside I3. The outer part of the share is often referred to as the wing I4 and may be formed as a separate piece which is welded to a stub wing formed on an angular piece which on the other side comprises a gunwale or forward extension of the landside proper.
The landside, moldboard and share must fit very accurately on the saddle in order to present properly disposed surfaces to the earth in use. It is customary to grind these engaging surfaces to accurate shape after the forming operations have been completed. But this requires grinding of a very extensive area, making it an expensive operation.Y And after the parts have been finished they still may not t accurately all over due to the extensive contacting surfaces involved.
According to the present invention the contacting face of either the supporting or the supported part is provided with spaced raised portions which localize the area of contact and very greatly reducethe grinding coining or machining required in the nal finishing operations.
As shown herein, the share I2 is provided on the under surface which rests against the saddle I with ribs I6 which are so located relative to the bolts I1 which hold the share on the saddle that solid securement is provided. Where the bolts are located between ribs, as shown, there will be enough resiliency to provide a locking action.
The moldboard is shown to be provided with annular ribs I8 around the holes for the bolts I1.
The landside is likewise provided with ribs, either annular at the boltholes or longitudinally extending.
The ribs I6 of the share are shown as extending parallel to the upper edge of the share; however, when preparing share blanks in pairs by cutting diagonally along a longitudinally ribbed strip of rolled stock the ribs will run diagonally relative to the upper edge of the share. The ribs, of course, may have various shapes, the main point being that they provide a solid resting surface and that they are of small extent so as to minimize grinding coining or machining operations.
While one embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described it is to be understood that there may be various embodiments within the limits of the prior art and the scope of the subjoined claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A plow bottom comprising supported and supporting parts and bolts securing the parts together, one of said parts on its side which engages the other part being provided with a finished bearing surface and the other part being provided with spaced raised finished bearing surfaces of limited extent adapted to engage the nished surface of the other part, the raised surfaces adjacent the bolts being spaced from the sides of the bolts by a distance for the purposes set forth.
2. A plow bottom comprising a saddle and working parts, such as share, landside, and moldboard, secured thereon by bolts, each of said working parts being provided on its saddle engaging surface with spaced raised finished-top ribs on opposite sides of said bolts and spaced therefrom by a distance suiiicient to provide springiness, and the saddle being provided with finished surfaces on which said raised portions are seated, for the purposes set forth.
