FREEDMAN COMBINATION TABLE AND CHAIR 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 1 Filed Nov. 29, 1944 INYENTOR Harry Freedman BY 242. 8 Claims. 1

This invention relates to a combination table and chair.

An object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be collapsed compactly and which may easily be opened up to provide a table and chair.

Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the table may be tilted to any desired angle and which may also be moved in its own plane and fixed in adjusted position.

Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described supported like a tripod by two legs at the rear beneath the seat, and on one leg on the front beneath the table top.

Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact device of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and manipulate, and which shall yet be practical and efiicient to a high degree in use.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,

Fig. l is a side elevational view of a combination table and chair embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof;

Fig. 3 is a rear end view thereof;

Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the device partially collapsed; I I

Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the device fully collapsed;

Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 6-5 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 7 is a partial view of the front leg and illustrating a modified construction.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, I 0 designates a combination table and chair embodying the invention. The same comprises generally a table top II and a seat I2. The table top II is supported by a front leg I3, and the seat I2 is supported on a rear leg member I4, as will appear hereinafter.

Attached to the underside of seat I2 and adjacent and parallel to the rear edge thereof are a pair of aligned bearings I5. Swiveled or hinged onto the bearings I5 is a rear leg member I4. The

same comprises a top horizontal portion l 6 and a pair of downwardly extending parallel legs H. Member I4 may be made of a single piece of round tubular stock. The horizontal portion I6 is journalled in the bearings [5. The legs I! are interconnected by a horizontal brace I8 disposed above the lower ends of the legs. Pins I6a fixed to portion I6 contact the outer ends of the bearings I5 to prevent side shifting of leg member I4. Fixed to the underside of seat I2 adjacent the front edge thereof is a sleeve extending longitudinally of the midsection of the seat. At the underside of seat I2 is a tubular rod 2| passing through sleeve 20. One end of said rod is fixed to the middle of horizontal portion I6 of leg member I4. The rod 2| has a T-sleeve 22 at its rear end rotatably receiving said horizontal portion I6. Rod 2| projects forwardly beyond the seat I2 and terminates in a pair of bifurcated apertured cars 24 for the purpose hereinafter appearing.

Attached to the brace I8 at a point somewhat oil the middle of said brace is an angular bracket 25 having a forwardly extending apertured finger 26. Hinged to finger 26, as on hinge 21 passing through the aperture in said finger, is one end of a link 2111. Attached to the underside of seat I2 and disposed between sleeve 20 and the forward edge of said seat, is a bracket 29 having a downwardly extending finger 30. Hinged to finger 30 as on pivot IN, is one end of a link 32. Link 32 is pivoted to an intermediate portionof link 21a as at 33. Pivoted to the other end of link 21a, as at 34, is a link 35 disposed below rod 2|. The forward end of link 35 and the bifurcated portion 24 of rod 2| are hinged to a pair of brackets 40, 4| fixed to the lower and upper ends, respectivelyyof a tubular sleeve 42 of square cross section. The

front leg I3 is preferably of square tubular construction so that it cannot rotate in sleeve 42.

Fixed to leg I3 is a pin 44 adapted to be received in a notch 45 at the lower end of tube 42 to limit sliding movement of the leg relative to the tube in one direction. Fixed to the leg l3, adjacent the lower end thereof, is a footrest 46 as shown in the drawing. 7

Attached to the underside of the table top H is a longitudinal bracket 50 of angular cross section. The bracket 50 has a horizontal wall 5! contacting and riveted as at 52, to the underside of tabletop I l. Extending downwardly from the horizontal portion 5| of bracket 50 is a wall 53 formed with a longitudinal slot 54. At the upper end of the tubular leg I3 is a flat offset wall 55 formed with a through opening. Extending through wall 55 is a bolt 56 which also passes through said slot 54. Bolt 56 has a head 51 contacting wall 53 of bracket 50. On the bolt is a wing nut 58 for tightening the bolt in any desired adjusted position of the table top. It will now be understood that the table top I I may be tilted to any desired angle and may also be slidably moved in its own plane and then fixed to adjusted position by the wing nut 58. It will be noted that the device may be set up as shown in Fig. 1 so that the person can sit-on seat l2 and use the table top I I. The person sitting on the seat may also rest his feet on the footrest 46.

It will be noted that the device may be collapsed in substantially fiat shape bringing the table top H and seat l2 into the same plane. In Fig. 4 the device is shown in partially collapsed position, and in Fig. 5 in fully collapsed condition. After the device is collapsed the leg l3 may be slidably moved within the tube Al to bring the table top 1 I closer to the seat l2. Due to the fact that the leg l3 and tube 42 are square, the leg cannot turn in the tube.

If desired, the tube 42 may be omitted as shown in Fig. '7 in which case rod 2| and link 35 are hinged directly to spaced portions of the leg l3.

As shown in Fig. 5 brackets it may be fixed to the leg I3 and provided with pivots H for the rod 2i and link 35.

It will be noted that link 32 is offset to one side of rod 2| so that it can lie alongside rod 2| and directly beneath the seat when the device is collapsed. Link .210: is in a plane parallel to and alongside the plane of link 32, when the device is collapsed. Link 35 is in a plane offset from the plane of link 21a so that it likewise can lie beneath the seat l2. It will be noted that the offset wall 55 on leg l3 permits the leg to lie below rod 2| and parallel thereto when the device is collapsed.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
