(Cl. 155-124) This invention relates generally to furniture of the .type provided ,to induce diverting and educational activity of children. vMore specifically, this invention provides a childs combination desk and seat with means adapting the disk and seat to .be relatively .psit ionable,.
In prior art furniture of this type, it has been discovered that the child quickly passes through the range of physical size to which the .pieceof furniture .is best :suited.
It is a particular object of this invention to provide :a piece of childs furniture including-a self-supporting frame on which are associated ,a desk and .a seat adapted to be relatively positioned .to .the most comfortable use of the child.
it is a second object to provide .such a combination in which the seat may be slidably positioned relative to the desk by the child while sitting on the seat.
it is a third .object .to provide such .a .combination in which the desk is adjustable in height above the seat.
It is a fourthobjectto provide such a combination in which the desk is adjustable step by-step in height above the seat and in which the seat is horizontally slidable to adapt the combination to the useofa child as the child grows over the size range ,to which :theposition of the desk is adapted.
Reference is here made to my co-pending application S. N. 192,703, now Patent Number 2,694,440, filed October 28, 1950, for U. S. Letters Patent on my invention of a combined desk and blackboard, of which this application is a continuation in part.
How the above objects are attained is explained in the following description referring to the attached drawings in Which Fig. 1 is substantially a side elevation of the combination of my co-pending application S. N. 192,703, but modified to include the improved sliding seat of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary end view of the combination of this invention shown in Fig. 1 as viewed in the direction of the arrows 22.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section viewed along the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view as viewed from the line 44 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of another form of the combination of this invention.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary end view of the combination of this invention shown in Fig. 5 as viewed in the direction of the arrows 66.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary end view of the combination of Fig. 5 as viewed in the direction of the arrows 77.

Referring now to the drawings, the form of the combination of this invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 is seen 2,726,712 Patented Dec. 13, .1955
to include .a pair of rear legs .11, .12, crossed and mortised together as shown .at .13 and slotted .at14to receive, as shown, the rear end of .rail .15 formed throughout its length from its underside with'.deQP:g -0ove .16 adapted to receive through-bolt ,17 formed at one end with head .18 and at the other end with threads 19 adapted to engage wing-nut 20. Washer .21 protects legs 11 and 12 from head 18 and washer .22 forms .a thrust bearing for wingnut 20.
Front legs 23, 24, are crossed and mortised together as shown at .25 and their .top ends angled .as shown are adapted to be secured by screws .26 .to bottom 27 of open topped box 28, Blackboardsmfaced top 29 hinged at its upper corners 'byscrews .30 to brackets 31 secured byv screws 32 to box 28 forms .a working desk top which can be swung upwardly and forwardly .to :hang .downwardly to expose the .full interior .of box 28. Legs 11, 12, 23 .and .24 areperforated as shown .to receive bolt .17. Strap metal brace 33 is perforated .as ,indicatedin Fig. 1 to receive bolt 17 and thereby be secured between rail 15 and front legs 23, 24. 'The upper end of strap .33 is secured to bottom 27 .of box 28 by bolt34.
.U-shaped clips .35 assembled upwardly .astride rail 15 are secured through their flanged ends, as shown, by screws 36, to the underside of seat 37, thus slidably securing seat 37 to rail 15 and forming an essential :improvement of this invention. It is apparent that as a child is seated astride .seat 27 with his .feet on the floor and his attention to his activities in .box 28.01 on desk top 29, he will unconsciously slideseat .27 along rail 15 to position himself Lina straight-backed comfortable position fol-his desk activities. With the .desk ,and sliding seat combination of this invention, ,a ;child .can ,grow through a considerablerange of length of abackand arms and still Work .athis desk activities with a .natural, illncramped posture.
A more elaborate form of the desk .andseatarrangement of this invention is illu trated in .Figs. .5 :to 8 of the drawings. :In 'th'isform of the invention, .a rearlegstandaid '46 at its lower end is mortised into and secured 'by screws 41 to rear foot 42. Similarly, front leg standard 43 at its lower end is mortised into and secured by screws 44 to front foot 45. Rail 46, having the same cross section as rail 15, shown in Fig. 2, is adapted to be positioned at its ends in vertical slots 47 and 48 formed in standards 40 and 43, respectively.
Front standard extension 49 secured at its angled top to the bottom of box 128 is adapted to support box 128 and its desk top 129 hinged by screws to bracket 131 secured to box 128 by screws 132. Strap brace 50 is secured at its ends to extension 49 and the bottom of box 128 by screw 51 and bolt 52 respectively. Extension 49 is formed with slot 53 longitudinally therein.
Standards 40 and 43 are perforated as shown to receive bolt 54 having head 55 at one end and formed with threads 56 at the other. Bolt 54, with washer 57 under its head, passes through a perforation in rear standard 4%, through the longitudinal groove formed upward from the lower edge of rail 46, through a perforation in front standard 43, through slot 53 in extension 49, through washer 58 and through wing-nut 59. Bolt 60 formed with head 61 at one end and threads 62 at the other passes through washer 63, through an appropriate perforation in front standard 43, through slot 53 in extension 49, through washer 64, and through wing-nut 65.
It is apparent that by loosening wing- nuts 59 and 65 extension 49 carrying box 128 and desk top 129 is vertically positionable along front standard 43 within the limits of bolts 54 and 60 in slot 53. Holding extension 49 in any selected vertical position and tightening wing- nuts 59 and 65 secures the entire structure in assembled position and holds desk top 129 at a selected height.

It isapparent that this combination greatly extends the range of the child's growth time over which the child will find the desk and seat combination usable. From time to time with this combination the standard 49 can be raised and between such times the sliding seat automatically will adjust to the childs most comfortable position. 7 v a It is understood that inithe rapid growth age range during which this type of equipment is adapted to a childs .use, it is essential that proper posture habits should be encouraged. Thev great usefulness and novelty of this invention resides in its adjustability, both periodically and automatically, to the exact needsof the child and to the promotion of proper posture habits in the child.
Having thus stated some of the objects of my invention, illustrated and described two forms in which my invention may be practiced, and explained its useful operation, I
claim:
1. In a desk of the class described, a pair of rear legs arranged as an inverted V and joined together at the top thereof, a pair of front legs joinedin X fashion, a seat a board positioned horizontally to abut said pairs of legs 7 at its respective ends, said seat board being held with its flat faces vertically arranged and formed along its under edge with a longitudinal groove throughout its length, a bolt occupying said, groove and extending through the joined portions of said legs, a desk top carried on the .upper ends of said front legs, a seat supported on the upper edge of said seat board and a spaced pair of U- shaped metal clips fitting said seat board over its sides and bottom edge, said clips being formed with horizontally outwardly extending flanges secured to the'underside of said seat for securing said seat to said seat board and slidably therealong. y
2. A childs combination desk and attached seat comprising a pair of rear leg boards secured together to form 4 7 an inverted T, a pair of front leg boards secured together to form an inverted T, a seat board positionedhorizontally to abut the vertically arranged one of each of said pairs of leg boards at the respective ends of said seat board, said seat board being held with its flat faceslvertically arranged and formed along its under edge with a longitudinal groove throughout its length, a bolt occu-' pying said groove and extending through the vertically arranged one of each of said pairs of leg boards, a vertically positioned desk board positioned flat against the outer face of one of said vertically arranged leg boards, said bolt extending through said desk board, a desk top carried on the upper end of said desk board, a seat supported on'the upper edge of said seat board, and a spaced 7 pair of U-shaped metal clips fitting said seat board over its sides and bottom edge, said clips being formed with horizontally outwardly extending flanges secured to the under side of said seat for securing said seat to said seat board and slidably therealong.
3. A structure for supporting a child in a seated position comprising a pair of laterally stable spaced leg structures, a seat board positioned horizontally to abut said leg structures at its respective ends, said seat board being formed along its under side with a longitudinal groove throughout its length, a bolt occupying said groove and. extending through said leg structures, a seat supported on the upper side of'said seat board and a spaced pair of U-shaped metal clips fitting said seat board over its lateral and bottom sides, said clipsrbeing formed with horizontally outwardly extending flanges secured to the under side of said seat for securing said seat to said seat board and slidably therealong.
