/ozRfrW SIMPSON ATFDRNEYB Patented Oct. 25, 1949 UNITED sTArss oFFlCE 1 Claim. l
This invention relates to an improved smokers pipe, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a pipe than can bethoroughly cleaned without the necessity of taking the pipe part or emptying the tobacco from the bowl.
Another object of the invention is to provide a smokers pipe that is unique in structure, comprising a few simple, durable parts that are easily assembled and the entire pipe being inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a longitudinal, sectional view of an embodiment of the invention with the plunger in smoking position;
Figure 2 is the same, with the plunger is cleaning position;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal, sectional view of the plunger;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a sectional View on the line 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the valve on the end of the plunger and Figure '7 is a sectional view on the line 'I-I of Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the reference numeral lll designates a pipe bowl, having the bowl chamber I2 and a horizontal threaded bore I4 for reception of the threaded end I6 of the tubular body shank or stem I8 projecting therefrom at an inclined relation to the bowl. In-
serted in the free end of the stem I8 is the removable mouth piece or bit 20 having a reduced portion 22 and an internally threaded bore 24 for reception of the threaded end 28 of the plungerl The punger 28 is provided at one end with the elongated slot 30 and at the opposite end is threaded at 32 to receive the internally threaded valve 34, having the curved seat 36 which will coact with the selective port 38 in the bottom of the bowl chamber I2, and the port 40 in opposed relation to the port 38. Therefore, port 38 communicates with the chamber I2 and port 40 communicates with the atmosphere.
In assembling the pipe, a nut 42 on the plunger 28 locks the bit and plunger in fixed relation to each other so that by turning the bit, the seat 36 in the valve will coact with either one of the ports as in Figure 1 for smoking of the pipe, and in Figure 2 for the cleaning thereof. A cork gasket 44 is positioned in the stem I8 for fixed engagement with the reduced portion 22 of the bit for an airproof joint, yet will permit rotation of the bit as desired.
2 The pipe can thus be cleaned at short intervals by rotating the stem to place the valve in Communication with the atmosphere, and with-` out removing the tobacco the smoker can blow into the bit and the moisture will pass out the Aport 43,after which the bit can be again rotated for smoking.
It will be impossible to draw moisture into the mouth, since the only communication the bit has with the stem is the slot 30 in the plunger 28 and the stem forms a reservoir which will trap the moisture and prevent the moisture from entering the smokers mouth. By pulling the bit and its component parts out of the stem, the stem can be cleaned, since the valve which has a close fit with the stem will scrape the stem clean as it it is withdrawn.
There has thus been provided, a pipe that will accomplish the object of the invention and it is believed that the construction and operation of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to Ibe understood that changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, providing they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A smokers pipe comprising a bowl having a tobacco chamber, a threaded bore and two alined ports therein, one of the ports communicating with the bore and chamber and the other port communicating with the bore and open to the atmosphere, a removable tubular stern threadably connected at one end to the bore in the bowl and a mouth piece removably connected to the opposite end of the stem, a plunger threadably connected to the mouth piece and extending into the stem, said plunger having an elongated slot at its connection to said mouth piece, and a valve threadably connected to the opposite end of the plunger, said valve including a curved seat whereby upon rotation of said mouth piece said seat will be positioned opposite to either of the ports for the smoking or cleaning of the pipe,
ROBERT W. SIMPSON.
