Referring to the drawings more in detail, the garment shown, by way of example, includes a rear upper section II], a rear lower section lfl a pair of sleeves ll--ll, each with an openable cuff l2, and a turned down collar [4, and is completed by a larger front section [5 and a smaller and complementary front section 5.

The garment is out according to a pattern such that the front thereof is openable and closable along a main straight obliquely inclined line I! and along a minor, lower straight vertical line l8. Said line I! at its top is to one side of the front vertical center line of the garment.

The garment, it should be noted, is wholly openable at its front, that is, all the way from the top to the bottom thereof.

The aforesaid panels are marked l9 and 20,

these respectively carried by the front garment sections l5 and I6.

The panel I!) is here shown as the one along which are spaced a suitable plurality of female or socket-type snap fastener elements 2|; while the panel is here shown as the one along which are matchingly spaced the corresponding plurality of male or post-type snap fastener elements 22. Also as here shown, it is the panels [9 and 20 which respectively carry the aforesaid loop 23 and the cooperant button 24.

Referring to the feature of the invention whereby the socket-type snap fastener elements 2| are attached in special relation to structural details of the panel l9, said panel is constituted by a marginal portion of the front garment section [5 folded on itself, as at 25, to provide the two

outermost plies

26 and 21 of the three plies in the make up of said panel l9. The third ply of the panel 89 is provided by a strip 28 of buckram or other similar reinforcing and stifiening material.

Said buckram strip 28 is held in place by a line of stitching 29; but preparatory to applying said stitching 29, an auxiliary strip 30, desirably of the same material as that of the section i5, is connected by a line of stitching 3| to the strip 28, and this strip 30 is then folded on itself, as indicated at 32, to provide on itself a lapped edge as shown in Figs. 9 andlO.

After this, the buckram strip 28 is inserted, and the said stitching 29 is applied; this passing through five plies of material.

It is now that the snap fastener elements 2| are attached, with the shank portions of these passing through three plies of material, of which the central one is the buckram strip 28; while all that is seen at the front of the garment, as a structural detail of the panel, is the single line of stitching 29.

Referring to the feature of the invention whereby the post-type snap fastener elements are attached in special relation to the structural details of the panel 20 (see particularly Figs. 7 and 8), said panel is provided by an extra strip of material, this marked 33 and desirably of the same material as that of the: section I6.

Then the strip 33 is folded on itself, as at 38, to provide an outer ply 39 and an inner ply 40 for the make up of the panel 20; with the piece of material constituting said inner ply being lat erally extended well past the stitching 34 to establish a single-ply flap 4!.

Then a line of stitching 42 is applied, this sent through the two plies 36 and 3'! and the sand- \viching plies for the latter constituted by the section 16 and the flap 4|. In other words, said stitching 42, as clearly shown in Fig. 8, goes through four plies of material.

It is now that the snap fastener elements 22 are attached. It is to be noted, particularly from Fig. 8, that the shank portion of each said element 22, piercing only two plies of material, has its center line substantially in the general line of extension of the fold 35; so that each such element 22, after its complementary parts have been clenched together, is anchored not only by way of the two plies 39 and 40-4l pierced by its shank portion, but also by powerful compression of and tight grip on, the two plies last-mentioned and the two plies established by the section l6 and its infolded edge portion 35.

These last-mentioned two plies, compressed and gripped between the two disk-like ends of a fastener element 22, are thus compressed and gripped only at one side of the shank of said element 22; but so tight is such grip obtained that it is permanently retained. Moreover, even on close inspection there is no indication that there is actually (note Fig. 8) a four-ply thickness of material at one side of the shank of an element 22 and merely a two-,ply thickness of material at the opposite side of such shank.

What is very important, the section I6 is not pierced at all by said shank; but, instead, its material adjacent the fold line 35 is merely locally slightly bunched away from the general line of extension of said fold at the location of said shank.

Further, although the fold line 35 as well as the line of stitching 4| are structural details of the panel 20 which are displayed at the front of the garment, these are hidden while the garment is being worn, by overlap of the panel l9 relative to the panel 20.

The free edge of the flap 4| is shown as having applied thereto a line of overcast edge-finish stitching 43; and the free edge of the strip 30 is shown as similarly finished, as at 44.

Note that the buckram strip 28, while it extends to the very top of the panel I9, whereby the root ends of the loop 23 (Fig. 3) may be stitched also to said strip, extends only far enough down along said panel as to have the bottom of said strip engaged by a line of stitching 45 (Figs. 1 and 2). Thereby the length of the panel l9 coextensive with the main obliquely extended line H is stiffened by said strip 28,-but said panel, all along its length coextensive with the minor vertically extending line i8, is relatively limply flexible.

With the panel l9 preferably narrower than the panel 20, as shown, the strip 30 is preferably wider than the flap 4i; this further to assist in giving a good drape to the front of the garment, so far as is concerned its appearance to the onlooker, and also so far as is concerned the comfort of the wearer.

The relationship of and coaction between the various sheet members of the plural-ply structures at and adjacent to the panels l9 and 20, as above described, when the spaced fastening means provided are closed, are such, it has been found, as will attain, while the garment is being worn, at once all the objectives of providing a blouse-like appearance at the front of the garment; of'ipreyenting anyfwri'nklihg ofthe' panels 19*" and-20.; ofsecuring'an ideal. frontal drape of the garment, andtof dependablysecuringthe fastenihgeliementsr. Having thus" described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

- 4; A'n.open-front shirt-:like garment, comprising, a. front portion which includes two sections separable along a: line. extending diagonally'from" a point offset from the vertical center line of" the front of the garment" down to; a point above the bottom of the-garment; both of saidsections below the bottom of suchdiagonal line having substantially vertically extending edges both shorter than said" line, eachiof saidsections including a panel extending down along; said section, said panels carried'by said'sectionsso thatwhenthe latter are arranged to; close, the front of the garment one panel is in overlapping relation to the other panel, and fastening means for said sections incorporating fastener elements carried by and spaced along one panel and complementary fastener elements carried and spaced along the other panel, one of said panels having an inner and an outer ply with said outer ply integral with the fabric of its carrying section, said section being folded on itself to provide said two plies, there being an auxiliary strip edge seamed to said inner ply, and an extra strip of stiffening material interposed between said inner and outer plies, said auxiliary strip being folded on itself to provide two plies thereof lying inwardly of said extra stiffening strip, and there being a line of stitching through the five plies including said section, said extra stiffening strip and the two plies last-mentioned, whereby the only structural detail of the last-named panel displayed at the front of the garment is said line of stitching, said fastening elements carried by the last-named panel being placed so as to pierce said extra stiffening strip as well as said inner and outer plies of said panel, there being auxiliary fastening means partially carried by each panel near the top thereof, said means comprising a male member on one panel and a female member on the other.

5. An open-front shirt-like garment, comprising a front portion which includes two sections when the latter are arranged to close the front of the garment one panel is in overlapping relation to the other panel, and fastening means for said sections incorporating fastener elements carried by and spaced along one panel and complementary fastener elements carried by and spaced along the other panel, one of said panels having an inner and an outer ply with said outer ply integral with the fabric of its carrying section, said section being folded on itself to provide said two plies, there being an auxiliary strip edge seamed to said inner ply, and an extra strip of stiffening material interposed between said inner and outer plies, said auxiliary strip being folded on itself to provide two plies thereof lying inwardly of said extra stiffening strip, and there being a line of stitching through the five plies including said section, said extra stiffening strip and the two plies last-mentioned, whereby the only structural detail of the last-named panel displayed at the front of the garment is said line of stitching, said fastening elements carried by the last-named panel being placed so as to pierce said extra stiffening strip as well as said inner and outer plies of said panel, there being auxiliary fastening means partially carried by each panel near the top thereof, said means comprising a male member on one panel and a female member on the other, said male member being a button and said female member being an eye-like loop.

6. An open-front shirt-like garment, comprising a front portion which includes two sections separable along a line extending diagonally from a point offset from the vertical center line of the front of the garment down to a point above the bottom of the garment, both of said sections below the bottom of such diagonal line having substantially vertically extending edges both shorter than said line, each of said sections including a panel extending down along said section, said panels carried by said sections so that when the latter are arranged to close the front of the garment one panel is in overlapping relation to the other panel, and fastening means for said sections incorporating fastener elements carried by and spaced along one panel and complementary fastener elements carried by and spaced along the other panel, one of said panels having an inner and an outer ply with said outer ply integral with the fabric of its carrying section, said section being folded on itself to provide said two plies, the other panel includin a supplementary strip edge seamed to the section for carrying that panel, such seaming including a line of stitching applied through said supplementary strip and also through two plies of the lastnamed section established by folding the' latter inwardly on itself, said supplementary strip being folded inwardly on itself to provide an inner ply and an outer ply for the last-named panel, and the last-mentioned two plies and the two plies of the supplementary strip established by the second-mentioned fold being secured together by a line of stitching through all four such plies, whereby the only structural details of the lastnamed panel displayed at the front of the garment are the said second-mentioned fold and the last-mentioned line of stitching.

An open-front shirt-like garment, comprising a front portion which includes two sections separable along a line extending diagonally from a point offset from the vertical center line of the front of the garment down to a point above the bottom of the garment, both of said sections below the bottom of such diagonal line having substantially vertically extending edges both shorter than said line, each of said sections including a panel extending down along said section, said panels carried by said sections so that when the latter are arranged to close the front of the garment one panel is in overlapping relation to the other panel, and fastening means for said sections incorporating fastener elements carried by and spaced along one panel and complementary fastener elements carried by and spaced along the other panel, one of said panels having an inner and an outer ply with said outer ply integral with the fabric of its carrying section, said section being folded on itself to provide said two plies, the

other panel including a supplementary strip edge seamed to the section for carrying that panel, such seaming including a line of stitching applied through said supplementary strip and also through two plies of the last-named section established by folding the latter inwardly on itself, said supplementary strip being folded inwardly on itself to provide an inner ply and an outer ply for the last-named panel, and the last-mentioned two plies and the two plies of the supplementary strip established by the second-mentioned fold being secured together by a line of stitching through all four such plies, whereby the only structural details of the last-named panel displayed at the front of the garment are the said second-mentioned fold and the last-mentioned line of stitching, the fastening elements respectively carried by the two panels being such that when said elements of one panel are coupled to the complementary elements of the other panel,

the second-named panel underlies the firstnamed panel.

8. An open-front shirt-like garment, comprising a front portion which includes two sections separable along a line extending diagonally from a point offset from the vertical center line of the front of the garment down to a point above the bottom of the garment, both of said sections below the bottom of such diagonal line having substantially vertically extending edges both shorter than said line, each of said sections including a panel extending down along said section, said panels carried by said sections so that when. the latter are arranged to close the front of the garment one panel is in overlapping relation to the other panel, and fastening means for said sections incorporating fastener elements carried by and spaced along one panel and complementary fastener elements carried by and spaced along the other panel, one of said panels having an inner and an outer ply with said outer ply integral with the fabric of its carrying section, said section being folded on itself to provide said two plies, the other panel including a supplementary strip edge seamed to the section for carrying that panel, such seaming including a line of stitching applied through said supplementary strip and also through two plies of the last-named section established by folding the latter inwardly on itself, said supplementary strip being folded inwardlyon itself to provide an inner ply and an outer ply for the last-named panel, and the lastmentioned two plies and the two plies of the supplementary strip established by the second-mentioned fold being secured together by a line of stitching through all four such plies, whereby the outer and inner plies of said panel but thus pierc- I ing said plies so closely adjacent said first-mentioned fold that the center lines of said fasteningelements all substantially intersect the first-mentioned fold but without piercing anywhere any part of the section carrying said panel.
