It is an object of. the invention to provide a table having. recesses and a supporting means adapted to receive a chair Which will maintain the chair in a position elevated from the floor.

A further object of the invention is to provide a table having supporting facilities adapted to hold a chair, the supporting facilities being of a ype which will p rm th cha r to e r a ily removed or replaced,

Still another object of the invention is to provide a chair comprising a back member which may be readily folded to permit the chair to be placed into the storage recess of the table;

It is a feature of the invention; that the seat of the chair will be visible when the chair is stored in the space provided for this purpose in the table. The chair may thus have a seat of suitable colored material in order that the seat may provide a pleasing and decorative appearance and give the eifect of being an integral part of the table.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a chair comprising a handle member which will facilitate the removal or replacementthereof with respect to the table and which at the same time will present a pleasing appearance when the chair is stored in the table. The handle may also serve as a stop for the folding back.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing andto the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring to Fig. 1, the table II comprises the usual top I2 and legs I3. The legs and top are shown joined by the four side members M, l5, l6, and H. Disposed beneath the table top 12 is a horizontal supporting member I 8 comprisinga longitudinal bar 19- and four supports 20 which extend to. the corners. of the table.

In each of the side members M: to H, a cutout portion. Z'l is provided. These cutout portions are shown as. being semi-circular in shape. The semi-circular shape is used when a chair is equipped with around seat. If a chair having a square seat, as shown. in Figs. 8- and 9', is to be used, then the cutout portion 21 will have the shape of a rectangle. Disposed on either side of cut-away portion- 2t there isa horizontally extending hook member 22'.

A chair in accordance with the invention is shown in 5. The. chair comprises a plurality of legsbl and a back member 52'. Legs 5| support a seat 53 which is shown provided vvith a padded section 54 Seat 53' is provided with a backwarolly extending handle .55. Handle 55 is shaped to extend close to and parallel to back member .52 when the back member is in the elevated position illustrated in Fig. 5. Back member 52 is secured to seat 53 'bypivots 56 which are shown extendinga substantial distance beyond' the lateral portions thereof and which are illustrated as being provided with cylindrical heads shaped for engagement with hook members 22.

Seat 53 may be squarein shapeas shown in Figs. 8'and-9. If such a square seat is used, the back member e2 may-be shaped as shownin Figs. 8 and 9-to conform closely to the-shape of the seat. In either typeof chair the padded seat portion 54- may have any desired form of "construction and the covering material therefor may bear a decorative design or may be colored'to into a decorative plan for' a-room.

In operation, a chair as shown in Fig. 5 may be stored the table by pivoting 52' about pivots 56' to the position? 52". With the chair thus folded, it may be conveniently grasped by means of handle 55. The front legs are then extended upwardly beneath the table and over longitudinal bar IS. The seat is then raised upwardly and after pivots 56 have been raised a sufficient distance, the chair is drawn slightly outwardy and then lowered so that hook members 22 will support the protruding heads of pivots 56. The chair will thus be stored beneath the table so that only its seat will be visible as shown in Fig. 1 and the seat will present a pleasing and decorative appearance. Moreover, the chair will appear to form an integral part of the table.

In order to remove the chair, the handle 55 may be grasped to disengage pivots 56 from hook members 22, thus permitting the seat of the chair to be lowered and the legs to be withdrawn from engagement with longitudinal bar [9. Back member 52 of the chair is then swung to its elevated position, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and the chair is ready for use. In side board I E, the cutaway portion is slightly displaced from that of side board [4 in order that the chairs positioned in opposite side boards will have their legs in interleaving relationship. When a chair is placed in either side board l5 or l1, its legs instead of engaging longitudinal bar l9 will engage two of the adjacent supports 20.

In Fig. 7 a large table H is shown to accommodate a plurality of chairs. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.

It will thus be seen that the invention provides a table which is of extremely simple construction, and which comprises no moving parts. In the chair, the back member is secured by a simple pair of pivots having heads adapted to engage the hooks provided for this purpose in the table. It will be seen that the invention is extremely rugged and capable of manufacture at comparatively low cost.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the class described, a table having a top and supporting means for the top, a chair comprising a seat member, a plurality of legs fixedly secured to the seat member, projecting members extending from the seat member, a side board in the table positioned adjacent to and beneath the table top having a cutaway portion therein shaped to conform to the seat portion of the chair, and supporting means secured to the table and adapted to support the chair by removable engagement with the legs and the projecting members in a position in which the seat member is substantially vertical and in conformity with the cutaway portion of the side board.

2. In a device of the class described, a table having a top and supporting means for the top, a chair comprising a seat member, a plurality of legs fixedly secured to the seat member, projecting members extending from the seat member, a side board in the table positioned adjacent to and beneath the table top and having a cutaway portion therein shaped to conform to the seat portion of the chair, transverse supporting means 4 secured to the table and adapted to support the chair by readily removable engagement with the legs thereof, and hook means disposed adjacent the cutaway portion and shaped for removable engagement with the projecting members and further disposed to maintain the seat member in a substantially vertical position in conformity with the cutaway portion of the side boards with the chair legs in engagement with the transverse supporting means.

In a device of the class described, a table having a top and supporting means for the top, a side member adjacent to the top and having a portion thereof cutaway, a pair of hook members disposed on opposite sides of the cutaway por-' tion and adjacent to the periphery thereof, a supporting member disposed beneath the top, a chair comprising a plurality of legs and a seat shaped to conform to the cutaway portion and secured to the legs, a back member shaped to conform to the seat, and headed pivot means securing the back member to the seat and disposed for removable engagement with the hook members with the chair positioned beneath the table and with the back member pivoted to a position adjacent the chair legs and with at least one of the chair legs extending over the supporting member and with the seat positioned in conformity with the cutaway portion of the side member.

In combination with a table having a top supported on legs and a depending side member, a support bar beneath the top spaced from and extended parallel to the side member, a chair having a seat member supported on front and rear legs, the side member being formed with a cutout conformed to the shape of the front portion of the seat of said chair, trunnions extended from diametrically opposite sides of the seat of said chair midway between the front and rear legs, and hook members mounted on the side member on opposite sides of said cutout to receive said trunnions, whereby said chair may be disposed beneath the top with the front legs resting on said support bar, with said trunnions engaged in said hook members and with said seat in said cutout.

5. In combination with a table having a top supported on legs and a depending side member, a support bar beneath the top spaced from and extended parallel to the side member, a chair having a seat member supported on front and rear legs, the side member being formed with a cutout conformed to the shape of the front portion of the seat of said chair, trunnions extended from diametrically opposite sides of the seat of said chair midway between the front and rear legs, and hook members mounted on the side member on opposite sides of said cutout to receive said trunnions, whereby said chair may be disposed beneath the top with the front legs resting on said support bar, with said trunnions engaged in said hook, members and with said seat in said cutout, and a handle extended from the seat of said chair.

6. In combination with a table having a top supported on legs and a depending side member, a support bar beneath the top spaced from and extended parallel to the side member, a chair having a seat member supported on front and rear legs, the side member being formed with a cutout conformed to the shape of the front portion of the seat of said chair, trunnions extended from diametrically opposite sides of the seat of said chair midway between the front and rear legs,

5, and hook members mounted on the side member on opposite sides of said cutout to receive said trunnions, whereby said chair may be disposed beneath the top with the front legs resting on said support bar, with said trunnions engaged in said hook members and with said seat in said cutout, and a handle extended rearward from the seat of said chair, and a chair back pivotally supported on said trunnions to have an operative position rested on said handle when said chair is in use or an inoperative position extended along said front legs when said chair is disposed beneath the top.
