Description
(No Model.)
G. SHATSWELL.
GLAMPING DEVICE FOR RAILROAD RAILS.
No. 248,615. Patented Oct. 25,1881.
NrTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SHATSWELL, OF WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
CLAMPING DEVICE FOR RAILROAD-RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,615, dated October 25, 1881. Application filed July 26, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that l, GEORGE SHATsWELL, of Waukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices for Railroad-Rails, of which the followin gis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clamping devices to be used in fixing fishplates upon railroad-rails; and the same consists in the mechanism herein described.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side ele vation of a device embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts wherever the same are used in said drawings.
A represents a U shaped yoke, made of wrought-iron or other suitable material, and adapted to fit over the railroad-rail B.
O O are the fish-plates.
D is a projection on the inside of one of the legs of the yoke A, in order that the same may have a bearing only against the fish-plate, and not against the rail.
E is a lever provided with a curved end or foot, 6, and pivoted by means of the pin F to the yoke A in a suitable mortise therein.
G is a dog pivoted to lugs or projections g g on the yoke A, for the purpose of holding or looking the lever in position.
Thelever is provided with notches K K, in which the dog engages.
The operation of myiuvention is as follows: The yoke A is placed first over the rail and fish-plates, when, by operation of the lever E, the fish-plates are pressed firmly together between the projection D and the foot e of the lever, and bymeans of the dogG the same may be held thus clamped together while the bolts or keys are being adjusted and tightened, so that by use of my invention the operation of adjusting andputting on the fish-plates may be very much facilitated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a clamping device for adjusting fishplates on railroad-rails, the combination of yoke A with lever E, provided with foot 0, substantially as specified.
2. In a clamping device for adjusting fishplates on railroad-rails, the combination of the yoke A, provided with projections D, of lever E, provided with foot 0, and (log Gr, substantially as specified.
