Description

Oct. 11, 1949.
C. W. WERNTZ WRIST WATCH Filed July 9, 1946 Patented Oct. 11, 1949 3 Claims.
YT-hi5 invention relatcsuto wrist watch straps, and more particularly to a safety bracelet for use with a wrist watch strap to prevent damage or loss of the wrist watch when the strap is accidentally unfastened or when failure of the strap or strap pin occurs without the knowledge of the wearer.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved safety bracelet for a wrist watch, said bracelet being very simple in construction, eas to attach and attractive in appearance.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved safety device for a wrist watch which insures against accidental loss or damage to the watch which might otherwise be caused by fai1- ure of the main watch strap or its securing pins, said safety device being inexpensive to manufacture and being comfortable to Wear.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view showing a safety device according to the present invention secured in operative position to a malns wrist watch.
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail view showing the method of attachment of the safety device to the wrist watch of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing a modified form of the safety device of this invention secured to a ladys wrist watch.
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective detail View of a securing lug employed with the safety device of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, I l designates a conventional wrist watch of the type having securing straps i2 and 3 for securing the watch to the wearers wrist. According to the present invention, an auxiliary fastening device is provided, said auxiliary device compr sing a flexible mem ber i i, such as a metal in the form of a loop loosely secured around the wearers wrist and having a clasp 55 which engages an eye it for detachably fastenin the loop ends together. Siidably engaging the flexible member is are a pair of lug members ii and it, each lug member being formed with a sleeve portion 28 which en circles the flexible member and with a relatively eye portion it which encircles the strap pin of the watch and is positioned between the edge of the strap loop and the pin lug 2| of the watch, as shown in Figure 2. Although in this figure only the method of connecting the lug member ii to the strap pin for the strap member is is disclosed, it will be understood that the same method is employedin connecting the luglmember -18 to the strap pin for the strap member l2. It will be obvious, therefore, that if either strap member should break or the strap members should be accidentally unfastened unbeknown to the wearor, the watch will remain safely secured to the wearers wrist by the flexible member it. The same would be true if either of the strap pins should break. Loss of the Watch would, therefore, be prevented, except in the very unlikely circumstance of both strap pin being simultaneously bro-hen without the wearers cognizance.
Referring to Figure 3, 23 designates a ladys wrist watch provided with a main wrist-engaging chain 25 having a clasp device 25. Encircling the wearers wrist is an auxiliary flexible member [4 similar to that employed in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 1. Member I4 is provided with the respective clasp and eye elements to and it, as in said previous embodiment. Slidably engaging member i i are a pair of lug members 2%, 26, each lug member 26 comprising a major sleeve portion 2'! which slidably encircles flexible member I 1i and a minor sleeve portion 23 which encircles the side portion of one of the links of flexible member 24 As in the preceding embodiment, if any part of the main securing structure of the watch should fail, the watch will be retained attached to the wearers Wrist by either one or both of the lug members 2 25 and auxiliary flexible member It. The same will be true if clasp 25 is accidentally opened unbeknown to the wearer of the watch, Only in the extremely unlikely event of the failure of both lug members 26, 26 would there be any donger of losing the watch.
Auxiliary bracelet member i l, in either of the embodiments herein described, loosely encircles the wearers wrist and normally is not under stress, the main strap being the normally stressed member.
Minor sleeve portion 28 is bendable so that said minor sleeve position may be readily deformed sufiiciently to permit it to be engaged in encircling relation to the link element of chain 2Q when the safety device is being secured thereto.
It will be seen that either of the embodiments of the safety device of the present invention may be employed without modification of the wrist watch structures to which they may be secured.
While certain specific embodiments of a wrist watch safety device have been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that .yarious modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention other than as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A safety bracelet for use with a wrist watch band comprising a flexible member arranged as a loop, and a pair of spaced lugs positioned adj acent said flexible member and said band and 0pible member and slidably engaging the latter member.
3. A safety bracelet for use with a chain Wrist 0 Number watch band comprising a flexible member arranged in a loop, and a pair of lugs positioned adjacent said flexible member and said chain wrist band, each of said lugs having one end carried by a link of said chain wrist band and having the other end encircling said flexible member and slidably engaging the latter member.
