2 Claims. (01. 16-85) This invention relates to a door stop.
A general object of the invention is to provide a door stop adapted to provide a positive limit of hinging movement of the door without damaging shock thereto, as for example, when the door is blown open by a strong gust of wind.
Other objects of the invention will be manifest from the following brief description and the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly broken away and in section, of a door stop unit embodying the features of the invention, the same being shown in door-closed position.
Figure 2 is a similar plan view but illustrating the unit in door-open position.
Figure 3 is a view corresponding to Figure 2, but greatly enlarged and broken away for clearer detail.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral Ill designates an elongated, extensible door stop unit, the same being of a length, in a doorclosed or extended position thereof, approximating the width of a door D (see chain-dotted lines in Figures 1 and 2). The unit is adapted to be secured, by means of attachments II and I2 at opposite ends thereof, between a point adjacent the lateral center of the door D and a point on a fixed structure in the general direction of opening movement of the door. As illustrated in Figure 1, the attachment I2 is secured to a vertical wall surface in the plane of door D, and at a point on the opposite side of the door hinge from attachment I I.
The unit l may include a sleeve I3 within which is telescopically or slidably received a rod I4, the outer ends of the sleeve and rod being externally threaded to receive caps I5 and I6 having apertured lugs I1 and I8, which are pivotally connected to lugs I9 and 20 on the attachments II and I2, respectively. These attachments include flanges 2| and 22 suitably apertured for attaching screws (not shown). The length of the rod I l may be so proportioned that in the door-open or contracted position (Figures 2 and 3) of unit I 0, the inner end of the rod will have moved to positive engagement with an inner face portion 23 of cap I5.
In order to eliminate shock when the end of rod I4 engages cap I5 in a desired fully open position of the door D, a compression spring 24 may be extended between a collar or nut 25, longitudinally adjustably threaded on the rod, and a washer 25 engaged against the shoulder 21 provided by the inner end of sleeve I3. The collar 2 25 is longitudinally adjustable so that the spring tension may be efiective to apply yielding resistance to opening door D, but without necesslalrily being effective to cause the door to slam s ut.
In the use of the door stop unit described above, it is attached as previously described at any location vertically along the length of the door D, according to conditions for attachment. With the unit properly located, when the door is opened from the closed position of Figure 1 to the position of Figure 2 or 3, the rod I4 is telescoped or retracted within sleeve I3, against the shock-absorbing resistance of spring 24, until the inner end of rod I4 engages portion 23 of the cap I5. This provides a positive stop against further outward swinging of the door, and should the door-opening be sudden, such as by action of a sudden gust of wind, the spring is efiecti-ve to prevent such shock as would cause damage to the door or associated parts or structure.
Modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A door stop for limiting outward hinging of a door, comprising an elongated unit including a sleeve and a rod for telescoping therein, a sub-- stantially non-yielding stop portion within said sleeve for positive engagement by the inner end of said rod in a retracted door-open position of said unit, attaching means pivoted to the outer ends of said rod and said sleeve :for attaching the unit between the door and a fixed structure generally in the direction of outward swinging movement of the door and with the points of attachment for said attaching means at substantial distances from the hinge point of the door, said rod and sleeve thereby being in extended relation in the door-closed position of said unit, shoulder means fixed on said rod in spaced relation to the inner end of said sleeve, and a compression spring on said rod engaged between said shoulder means and said inner end of said sleeve, said spring being efiective to apply cushioning action between the extended and retracted positions of said rod and sleeve.
2. A door stop for limiting outward hinging of a door, comprising an elongated unit including a sleeve and a rod for telescoping therein, a substantially non-yielding stop within said sleeve for positive engagement by the inner end of said rod in a retracted door-open position of said unit, at-' taching means pivoted to the outer ends of said rod and said sleeve for attaching the unit between the door and a fixed structure generally in the direction of outward swinging movement of the door and with the points of attachment for said attaching means at, substantial distances from the hinge point of the door, said rod and sleeve thereby being in extended relation in the doorclosed position of said unit, a collar longitudinal- 1y adjustably mounted on said rod in spaced relation to the inner end of said sleeve, and a compression :spring :onsaid FlOd eng'aiged between said collar and said inner end of said sleeve, said spring being effective to apply cushioning action between the extended and retracted positions of said rod and sleeve.
