PATENT OFFICE. i
noon CLOSER.
Application filed August 6, 1926. Serial No. 127,555.
This invention relates to closing devices for doors, and has for its primary object to provide a door closure construction that may be readily installed and that will effectively cause the door to move tofully closed position when pressure upon the same is re-' ready disassembling of the same for clean ing, repair, or renewal purposes.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same comprising the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like numerals indicate like parts: v
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a door equipped with my improved closure.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the closure as applied, and
Figure 3 is a perspective of the spring tension adjusting sleeve of the device.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, 5 indicates a hinged door mounted within the usual frame 6. Theclosure device constitutes the provision of a relatively elongated cylinder 7 mounted horizontall at the upper end of the door 5 and provide at one end with a removable slip type cap 8 that may be secured thereon in any desirable manner, preferably through the medium of screws 9. Arranged within the 0pposite open end of said cylinder 7 is a plug 10 that is formed at its end outwardly of the cylinder with acircular head 11 through which is a vertical bore 12. Rectilinea-r'ly movable within the cylinder is a piston 13 formed with a longitudinal threaded opening for receiving the inner screw threaded end of an elongated piston rod 14 that pro jects outwardly through an opening in said cap 8, the outer end of this rod being provided with a flattened head 15, Figures 1 and 2. v
Slidably arranged upon the rod let toward the cap end of the cylinder 7 is a flanged sleeve 16, the flange of which is formed' 'at its periphery with a threaded opening 17. At this end of the cylinder 7, the same is longitudinally slotted as at 18' and at the lower edge of this slot are spaced notches 19. Extending through the slot 18 and threaded within the flange of the sleeve is A a thumb screw 20, and obviously by engaging the screw within the various predeterminedly spaced notches 17, thesleeve 16 will be maintained in predetermined position within the cylinder 7, with the end in view v i of adjusting the tension of an expansible coil spring 21 that surrounds the piston rod 14 between the piston 13 and said flanged sleeve 16, Figure 2.
Secured to the door 5 at its upper end and.
at its outer edge is a plated arm 22 secured to the door in predetermined spaced relation with respect to the capped end of. the cylinder 7. The outer end of this arm is bifurcated as disclosed in Figure 1 for receiving the flattened end 15 of the piston rod 14 after which said flattened end of the rod is pivotally secured within the bifurcated end of the arm as at 23. r
Depending from the upper bar of the door frame 6 adjacent the hinged edge of the door 5 is a bolt 24 that is arranged cylinder closure plug 10, after which said bolt is secured within the bore by reason of anut 25, this securing means, affording a. pivotal connection between the cylinder and the door frame.
It will be obvious that when the door 5 is moved to open position, the cylinder 7 will swing in the direction of the movement of the door. At the same time the rod 1 1 will be pulled away from the cylinder for causing the spring 21 to compress therein.
Obviously upon the releasing of the door, the spring will exert its force to draw the door to closed position. v
It will be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple, and eflicient form of closure for doors that is well adapted for all the purposes heretofore designated, and even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is never-' thelessto be understood that seine changes may bermade' therein Without effecting the spirit and scope of the appended clainis. i
Having thus described the inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire ters Patent is i' i 1. In a door closure of the character described, a relativelyelo'ngated cylinder, a pivotal connection between one end of the cylinder and the door frame, a piston rectilinearly slidable within the cylinder; and
attached at one, end to apiston rod extend- .tvveentheouter end-of the piston rod and the door. v i y 2,111 a closure for oted at one end to the door frame, a piston to secure by Let;
doors, acylinder pivslidable jwithinpthe cylinder and attached to the inner end of a pisto'n rod arranged \Vlthinthe cylinder, the opposite end of which projects therefrom, a pivotal connection between the projecting end of the piston rod and the door, a sleeve slidably arran ed upon piston rod Within the cylinder,
complementary construction between the sleeve and the cylinder vvheleby the sleeve may be securedto the cylinder in predetermin lqn w l djus e P s i s i expansible coil spring surrounding the, pisi ton rod betiveen the piston and said sleeve, said; complementary constructlon between the sleeve and cylinder consisting of a lateral screw earried by thesleeve and slidable Within a longitudinal slot in thefadjacentr end of the cylinder, said slot being provided atone oflits longitndinaledge with spaced notches for receiving saidscrew when the 45' same A is forced in, a, direction toward saidq ch f Q In testimony whereof I afiix mysignature.
