EMMETT E. BAOHTELL, OF NEVADA, OHIO.
PERMUTATlON-PADLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,268, dated October 18, 1881. I
Application filed July 29, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMETT E. EACH-TELL, of Nevada, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Locks; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to permutation-padlocks; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a front plan View of my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 00 00. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line y y. Fig. 5 is a rear view of the covering-plate.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
A in the drawings denotes a cylindrical box or casing, in the front of which is formed a bearing, B, for the outer one of a series of sleeves, two or more innumber, three of which are shown in the drawings, where they are denoted by the letters (J O theinner one being 0 and the outer one 0 The said sleeves are provided upon their outer edges with rims or disks D, having handles E, by which they may be readily rotated or manipulated. Each of the sleeves or revolving collars is provided with a stud, F, adapted to engage one of a series of notches, G, in the inner periphery of the permutation rings or disks H, one of which is provided for each sleeve or collar, upon which it is held in position in this manner. The inner peripheries of the permutation-disks are each provided with a corresponding number of notches Gr, suitably and correspondingly lettered, in order that the combination may be changed when desired. The outer edges of the permutation-disks H are provided with notches I, which, by turning the disks D,may be brought in juxtaposition when it is desired to open the lock.
The rear plate, J, of the lock is provided with a pair of diagonally-opposite hooks or catches. K, adapted to engage apair of studs, L, upon the inner side of the casing A, to which the said rear plate may thus be at tached. Upon the under side of the plate J is arranged a latch, M, consisting of a sliding hook, N, having a slot 0, by which it is pivoted upon a stud, P, and provided with a downward-projecting finger, Q. To retain the said latch in its proper position a spring, R ,is
' employed. A stud, S, is also formed upon the under side of the cover or plate J A shackle, T, having a hook, U, to engage the latch M, is pivoted to the casing, and the front side or face of the latter is stamped with letters or ciphers corresponding with those upon the permutation-disks.
In operation the permutation-disks are set to certain letters or ciphers. The rear plate or disk is then adjusted so as to engage the studs L ofthe casing, and the shackle T may then be forced down to engage the sliding latch M. The stud S will now prevent the shackle T bein g released from the slidin glatch. To release it the permutation-disks must be turned to adjust their engaged letters to the corresponding letter upon the face of the lock, the shackle T partly raised, so as to cause the finger Q, of latch M to engage the notches I of the permutation-disks, which may then be turned by turning the rear plate, J, so as to release the latch from the shackle and permit the lock to be opened. To change or adjust the combination, the back plate and thedisks are removed and the latter readjusted with the letters or ciphers of the new combination opposite the studs F of therespective sleeves. .The back is then again put in place, and thelock is ready for operation. It is, of course, unnecessary to remove the back plate every time the lock is to be opened, as, by turning it to the required position the shackle is disengaged.
' Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. In a permutationpadlock, the combination, with the casing A, having studs L and revolving permutation-disks, as herein de scribed, of the removable rear plate having the hooks K, the stud S,and the sliding spring- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as latch M, having finger Q, as herein described, my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in for the purpose shown and specified. presence of two witnesses.
2. In a permutation-padlock, the combina- 5 tion, with the disks having exierior notches, EMMETT EVENS BAOHTELL.
0f the removable rear casing-plate having a pivoted sliding-latch, M, provided with adown- Witnesses: wardprojecting finger, Q, to engage the said W. N. DE JEAN, permutation-disks, as herein described, for the JAMES L. COOK.
