Description

Aug. 30, 1949. 5 WOHLAND 2,480,534
BABY BUGGY GUARD Fil'ed Jan. 8, 1948 IN! ENTOR:
EDWARD C. WOHLAND M44 um/ ZZ Patented Aug. 30, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Edward C. Wohland, Chicago, Ill. Application January 8, 1948, Serial No. 1,223
3 Claims. (01. 296-36) This invention relates in general to a buggy guard and is more particularly described as an attachment which may be secured to buggies, strollers and baby carriages of the type having a raisable hood with aspace in front of the hood which is unprotected for a baby capable of sitting or standing alone.
An important object of the invention is to provide a guard attachment which may be quickly applied to any baby buggy of this type and attached to the sides of the raised hood so that it will extend in front thereof and provide a guard from preventing a baby from falling out of the y.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for supporting the front portion of the attachment upon the sides of a baby buggy to which it is applied.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the specification and will be apparent from the accompanying drawings in which,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing a buggy guard in accordance with this invention as applied to a baby buggy of the type having a raisable hood; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the buggy guard shown in Fig. 1.
Most baby buggies are provided with a raisable hood for sheltering a baby when he is small or lying down. Usually the body of the baby buggy is filled or nearly filled with pillows, comforters, and other articles so that if the baby is old enough to sit alone, or to stand, it is dangerous to leave the child in the baby buggy, since he may pull himself up into the space not covered by the hood and there he is unprotected from falling.
The present invention provides an attachment which may be secured to any baby buggy of the hooded type by inserting a substantially U-shaped member at the front of the baby buggy supporting the front of the guard by outwardly projecting braces and attaching the upper and inner ends of the guard to the upper sides of the hood.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the body 4 of a baby buggy is represented in Fig. 1, omitting the running gear and handle connections as having a raisable hood 5 with a supporting brace B at each side thereof. This hood usually extends over about half of the body leaving the other half uncovered by the hood and unprotected at the sides thereof.
The present invention comprises an attachment forming a guard which has a substantially U-shaped guard member 1 formed of fiber, plastic, paper board, thin metal, or any other suitable material which preferably has some inherent stiffness so that it will not easily buckle or bend. Attached around the upper edge of the U-shaped member is a stifieningand protecting strap 8 preferably of metal secured to the guard member by rivets 9 or other suitable fastening devices and the ends of the strap projecting beyond the ends of the guard member. Attached to each of the projecting ends of the straps 8 by means of rivets I0 is an offset spacing clip l2 which also extends to the adjacent end of the strap 8 and is spaced therefrom so that the edge of a hood 5 may be inserted between the end of the strap and the end of the clip l2. In order to more firmly attach the guard to a hood, each end is provided with a thumb screw I3 which extends through the outer clip l2 and also through the end of the strap 8 adjacent thereto.
The thumb screw is preferably located at a distance from the ends of the strap and the clip l2 so that the thumb screw when tightened may act as a clamp for engaging the edge of the buggy hood therebetween or if desired, the thumb screw may be threaded through the clip and into engagement with the outer side of the hood, thereby holding the guard tightly in engagement therewith.
At the outer or forward end of the guard, a strengthening rib I5 is connected to the upper strap 8 and extends downwardly at each side of the guard. A crosspiece l6 extends across the bottom of the guard and is formed at each end with an upward bend I! which is attached to the lower end of the strengthening rib I5 by a fastening rivet l8 and it has an outward angular extension 20 at a distance above the bottom of the guard and extending outwardly at right angles thereto. This cross piece l6 thereby strengthens the guard and prevents it from collapsing at the forward end-and the projections 20 engage over and rest upon the upper edge of the body 4 of the baby buggy, thereby limiting the guard in its downward movement and thereby holding the front end of the guard in place. The crosspiece 16 may provide a support or rest for articles carried in the baby buggy and also has a seat for a small child at this end of the buggy.
In applying the guard to a baby buggy, the thumb screws [3 are loosened, the strap ends 8 and the clips l2 loosely straddle the opposite upright edges of the hood and the outer end of the guard is inserted within the open end of the body and move downwardly therein until the projections 20 engage the upper edge of the buggy. The thumb screws [3 are then tightened to clamp or engage the edge of a buggy hood by means of the fastening clips.
While a preferred construction of this guard has been described in detail, it should be regarded as an example or illustration rather than a restriction or limitation of the invention as many changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:-
1. In a guard of the class described, a U-shaped guard member of substantially stifi material, a strengthening strap attached around the upper edge of the material and projecting beyond the ends thereof, a fastening clip includingvan attaches ing thumb screw at each protecting of the strap, and means projecting outwardly from the opposite forward end of the guard at each side,
thereof for engaging and limiting the downward mov m nt of he guard n a member to, which t i plie 2.7 A baby buggy guard; comprising a Ll-shaped u rd member at tiff materia a suppo t n ap; t ache the upper edg of. th u d member and; proj ecting beyond the ends thereof, an offset clipattach-ed to thefouterside of each rojecting ndof thestr p sot at the oute d of the clip is spaced fromthe outer end of the strap, a fastening thumb screw inserted through 4 the outer clip and engaging the strap within it, and means projecting outwardly from the sides at the other end of the guard for supporting it.
3. A baby buggy guard, comprising a U-shaped guard member of relatively stiff material, means at the upper ends of the member for releasably engaging the member with each of the opposite sides of a baby buggy hood, and a crosspiece at the opposite lower end of the guard extending 1 below the edges of the guard, bent upwardly at the sides and secured to the guard member with the extremities of the crosspiece bent outwardly above the lower edges thereof to form a support at, each side of the guard.
