to a device whichis useful for invalids. Patients who are bedridden often develop sores on the heels of the feet. Suchsoresabecome very painful and likewise dangerous. Furthermore, a foot that is constantly covered with bedclothes becomes exceedingly Sensitive to the weight of the clothes. 7
The present invention relat'es to a type of rest which is adapted to-lift the bedclothes so that the foot may be maintained in an upright position without the bedclothes-touchingthe foot and wherein the foot will be elevatedabove the sheet in such a-manner that the heel of the foot does not rest on the sheet. Specifically, the present inventionis so arranged and constructed that that portion of the foot known'as theTendo Calcaneus carries the weightofthe foot, leaving the heel free and not touching any article.
The present invention is likewise adaptable for use by patients as an arm support, in thatthe elbow may rest thereon with comfort. Thus, the present invention may aid the patient by supporting the elbow when the patient is-in bed, or y when the elbow needs support after an arm operation.
The variousadaptations and uses for the invention will be apparent both, to the physician and to the patient.
An object of the invention is to provide a rest which will comfortably and efficiently act as a support for either the foot or the elbow, and which will at the same time hold bedclothes elevated so as not to interfere or touch either the foot or elbow.
A further object is the provision of a device of the character stated which is attractive in appearance, inexpensive in cost to manufacture, and efficient and sanitary in use.
With the above-mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel and useful provision, formation, construction, association and relative arrangement of parts, members and features, all as shown in one embodiment in the accompanying drawing, described generally, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rest;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and showing a foot engaging the rest; and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the rest shown in Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing, the improved rest is designated asan entiretyand in one embodiment by the'numeral I. The rest l'is wedgeshaped or hasthe appearance of a right triangular prism, the lateral faces 2 and 3 being in substantially right-angular relationship, while the lateral face d-is at an inclined angle to lateral faces Z-andt and forms what maybe termed the slant front faceof the rest. The bases 5 and G of the-prism are hereinafter termed sides or end walls.
I stabilize the rest I by providing rigid members orpieces, such as by the use of plywood, for the sides 5 andt, lateral faces-2 and 3, and a member l which is inclined relative to later faces -2 and The plywood members are joined-togetherin any approved manner, such as'by gluing, nailing or the like. The member 7 is formed with an elongated slot 8. I fill the space included betweenthe sides 5 and '6, member 1 and lateral faces .2 and 3 with some padding material 9 such askapok, curled hair, or other material having like characteristics. The front face dis formed of a soft material which may be fabric or leather,
whereby the padding material 9 is fully enclosed.
This padding material is so shaped as to provide .a pocket ll] in the front face- 4. The shaping of the front-face, and the padding material, is such that the pocket is received withinthe slot 8 of plywood member I. It is to be observed, upon reference to Figure 2, that the padding material 9 is shown included between the front face and the member I, at H, thus giving an edge support at [2 for the foot above the heel portion [3. To add to the attractiveness of the device, the exterior surface of the plywood may be covered with leather, imitation leather, or fabric, which covering is indicated in Figure 2 at M.
In Figure 2 I have not shown any paddin included between lateral faces 2 and 3 and the inclined member I. For obvious reasons this space need not be padded. However, it is important that padding be interposed between the members above the member 1, and that the front face 4 be properly shaped so that a pocket [0 is formed therein. This pocket is easily formed by shaping the padding in the well understood manner.
It is intended that the padding should have a resiliency sufficient to force the portion thereof above the pocket outwardly in order that the foot when in the position shown in Figure 2 may have the sole thereof rest against the fabric or other covering of the front face under a slight yielding or deformable pressure. In other words, while the contact is soft, nevertheless some re- 3 sistance is encountered by the sole of the foot. This is likewise true for that portion indicated at H, and the padding at this zone is quite firm so as to readily support the weight of the foot along the edge l2.
The remarks which have been made relative to the foot likewise apply to the arm, and specifically the elbow when the elbow is placed within the pocket ID, the arm rests on the fabric bounding the pocket ID. The construction is such that when the elbow is received within the pocket l it does not contact the covering material, and yet the arm is suitably supported.
The operation, uses and advantages of the invention just described are as follows: W
If the rest is adapted for foot use, one or two of the said rests may be placed at the foot of the bed and under the covers. The heighth of the lateral face 3 is sufficient to elevate the covers above the foot, as see Figure 2.
The lateral face 2 is of sufficient width to give stability to the device and so that it will not tip over. Thus when the foot is resting in the position shown in Figure 2, by having theheel 13 within the pocket Ill, it is evident that the foot is supported at the zone [2, with sole of the foot resting against the fabric and under a resilient pressure. The rest, by elevating the leg, relaxes the patient, and heel sores which may have developed readily heal, as the heel is out of fabric contact. 7
In the same manner, the device may be used for supporting the arm by placing the elbow within the pocket ID.
The entire device is light in weight, and may be readily transported, is rigid in structure, although the front face is comparatively soft and yielding.
It is apparent that various uses may be found for the invention, but such'uses will readily suggest themselves to those who employ the device.
I claim:
1; As a new article of manufacture, a wedgeshaped cushion member formed with a flexible sloping wall and with a pocket portion, and a rigid member within the cushion and formed with an elongated slot at the zone of the pocket portion of said flexible front member.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a wedgeshaped cushion member provided with rigid rear, base and side wall members; a slanting front face formed of flexible material secured between said wall members, said front face being shaped to provide a pocket portion adjacent and above the base wall of the framing, and a rigid member interposed between the rear wall member and the base wall and formed with an elongated slot, the pocket of said flexible member being received in said slot.

As a new article of manufacture, a Wedgeshaped cushion having a flexible sloping wall, said sloping wall formed with a ledge portion and with a pocket portion to accommodate the foot, the said ledge adapted to engage the foot above the heel portion, the said heel to be received in the pocket portion without touching the bounding wall, the remainder of the Wall engaging the sole of the foot and conforming to the shape thereof. l
4. As a new article of manufacture a wedge shape support including rigid wall members comprising ,the rear upright, base and sides, of the support, and a flexible inclined front face for the support that is slightly deformable over most of its area and includes a pocket portion that is freely deformable within the rigid support.
5. As a new article of manufactures. wedge shape support including rigid Wall members comprising the rear upright, base and sides, of the support, a flexible inclined front face for the support, padding interposed between the major portion of front wall and the rigid support, and said inclined face having a pocket portion with no padding interposed between the bottom of the same and the rigid support.
