TOBACCO CURER Filed March 20, 1946 I 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR.
Mamie/75. a/7171a ATTD RN EYB Patented Aug; 9, 1949 UNITEDVVST-ATES PATENT OFFICE,
. TOBACCO CURER Masten B. Collins, Claudeville, Va. Application March 20, 1946, Serial No. 655,840
1 Claim.
novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in. which:
Figure 1 is a plan View of an embodiment of the invention installed in a tobacco barn;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; 7 V
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3--3' of Figure 1; V
reference numeral It! designates the tobacco barn in which'the tobacco curer 12 forming an em bodiment of the invention as installed and which comprises the fire box I4 which is fired from the open rear end l6. The front wall [8 of the fire box is provided with the pipe coupling 20 and the top 22 and side walls 24 of the fire box l4 engage the wall 26 of the barn being built therein. A flue 28 is connected to the coupling 2|! and extends longitudinally of the barn for practically the entire length thereof and then is bent at 30 to extend in parallel relation with the end wall 32 and then bent at 34 is extended in parallel relation with the first portion to be connected at its free end to the pipe coupling 36 in the chimney 38 which is constructed exteriorly .of the barn but engages the wall 26. Positioned immediately below the coupling 36 in the chimney 38 is a 2 2 the chimney 38 is provided with a pivoted damper 54 at the top thereof.
In operation fuel 56 preferably wood is placed in the fire box l4 and ignited. Heat from the second pipe coupling 40 which is connected to a flue 42 which extends longitudinally of the barn the same distance as flue 28 and is in inclined fire box I 4 will travel through the flue 28 in the direction of the arrows to the chimney 38 from where it will be dissipated into the atmosphere. However, if more intense heat is required in the barn the damper 54 is closed and the heat will travel through the flue 42 and emerge through the cutouts 46 and screens 48 into the interior of the barn.
It has been the usual custom to just build a fire and permit the heat to circulate without means for distributing the heat through the barn thus the present invention which provides the flues that extends and nearly covers the length and breadth of the barn and rest on the earth floor 58 of the barn is believed to be an improve ment over the prior methods employed. 7 It is believed that the construction and operation of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described, in combination with a tobacco barn of a fire box, a U-shaped flue extending for the length and partial breadth of the barn connected to said fire box at one end thereof, a chimney for said barn, the other end of said flue'being connected to said chimney, a second longitudinal flue connected to said chimney below said first'flue, screened openings in said second flue for distributing heat from said'flue into the interiorv of the barn, sliding dampers cooperating with said openings to control the heat entering the barn, a damper in said chimney for controlling the heat within the barn and means for connecting said flue to said fire box and said first and second flues to said chimney.
