Description

Now. 25 3924 1,517,206
L. c. FouNTAuN FURNACE Filed Oct. 13, 1923 MMM/M( WITNESS:
Patented Nov, 25, 1924.
F'UBNAGE.
Application filed October 13, 1923.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Lne Coi7 FOUNTAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingsburg, in the county of Florence and 't State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in furnaces especially adapted for use in curl@ ing tobacco and has for an object the provision of means whereby the furnace will be protected to prevent accidental lires due to the tobacco leaves becoming accidently ignited by falling on the iurnace, or from ll@ sparks rising from the furnace during the process of curing. f
To this end, the invention aims to provide a furnace having a lining which. will prevent the'escape of sparks and which is protected 2@ so that the leaves will not come in contactl with the heated lining.
lith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the follow ing novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings zd Figure 1 is an elevation of a furnace cont@ structed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sec tional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse section.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the furto nace.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the improved furnace comprises a casing or lining 10, the latter t@ including side walls, a top wall and a bottom wall. The top wall is preferably transversely curved, while the bottom wall is provided with perforations 11 which extend in wardly from one end thereof for an appre- 45 ciable distance and form draft openings.
The casing or lining is provided at each end with walls 12 and 13,-the former hav- Serial No. 668,412.
ing an opening 14 therein which may be closed by hinged doors 15, whereby the furnace may be supplied with fuel, The opposite end of the wall 18 hasv extending therefrom a relatively small projection 16 for connection with a flue, so as to provide an escape for the products of combustion and prevent sparks from reaching the tobacco or other combustible material. Each end wall 12 and 13 is provided with a iiange, the bottom portion 17 of which acts to space the bottom wall of the lining or casing from a ioor or other support, while the remaining portions 18 of the flanges are adapted to receive between them a casing or cover 19 of brick or other fire-proof material.
The invention provides a vfurnace which may be made of any desired dimensions and placed within a barn or similar structure for curing tobacco, without danger of fire, the lire within the furnace being eifectually prevented from escaping into the barn, while leaves falling from the tobacco upon the furnace will not be ignited due to the protection afforded by the lire brick 19.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A furnace embodying a metallic casing including side, top and bottom walls, a perforated section provided in the bottom wall adjacent one end thereof, end walls, said end walls projecting beyond the side and top walls to define flanges and below the bottom wall to define supports, a brick covering for the lining between said flanges and flush with the outer edges thereof, a door in one end wall and a iiue extension projecting from the other end wall.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LEE COY FOUNTAIN.
