AIR-HEATING FURNACE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERRY B. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at King, in the county of Stokes and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful'lmprovcments in Air-Heating Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in air heating furnaces and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the drying of tobacco or the'like and it is an object of the invention to provide a furnace of this general character with novel and improved means whereby a blast of air heated to a relatively high temperature may be discharged in a manner which best complies with the re uirements of practice.
nother object of the invention is to pro: vide a, novel and improved device of this general character comprising a body divided horizontally to produce vertically spaced compartments the upper compartment constituting an air chamber and the lower compartment constituting a fire box together with means associated with the air chamber for drawing air therethrough to be heated and to discharge such heated air in a forced draft.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising a body divided into an upper compartment and a lower compartment, the partition dividing said compartments being a high conductor of heat, the uppercompartment having an induction openingin the side thereof and eduction means at the end thereof but remote from the induction opening, the lower compartment constituting a fire box;
Another object of'the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising an air chamber and a 'fire box positioned therebelow, the air chamber being provided with an induction opening and an education means and wherein the induction opening has associated therewith means to prevent entrance of smoke from the fire box entering the air chamber.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved air heating furnace whereby certain Important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan but of somewhat a diagrammaticalcharacter illustrating, a furnace constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my. invention and in applied relation in connection with a tobacco drying plant or the like;

s disclosed in the accompanying drawings, F denotes my improved furnace which comprises the side walls 1 referably of brick and of a desired height. Bridging the space between the walls 1 and at a point substantially midway the height thereof is a' partition 2. The partition 2 is preferably of sheet iron and is supported by said side walls. This partition 2 provides the upper or air chamber A and-the lower chamber or fire box B.
One end of the fire box B is closed by the-wall 3 while the opposite end 4: is open. The open end 4.- provides means whereby the necessary fuel may be readily placed within the fire box andalso permits the reqproperly support uisite entrance of air to combustion.
The end of the chamber A immediately adjacent to the openend 4 of the fire box B is closed by the wall 5. The opposite end portion of the chamber A is gradually reduced in width and terminates in an eduction portion 6. This opening 6 is directly in communication with a conduit 7 closed at its top and extending downwardly. Leading from the lower portion of the conduit 7 is a pipe 8 which extends within the barn X or otherwise and as herein disclosed this pipe 8 extending therefrom in opposite directions thebranches 9 terminating in the discharge openings 10. The pipe 8 and branches 9 are preferably underground with the discharge ends-of the branches 9 substantially flush with the ground level. If preferred a suitable protecting guard '11 or the like may be disposed over the discharge ends of the branches 9 to prevent ntr nc f t o r th r fo e gn matt A s e all l at a P in i o P irnity to the closed end of the chamber A is provided with an induction ,or ,air inlet pe n 12- Ez endins throu heupper portion of the conduit 7 is a fan shaft 14;, said shaft extending beyond the opposite sides of said conduit and being rotatably supported by bearings 15 which are exteriorly located so as not to be subjected to the h'fiflted air passing from within the chamber A through the conduit 7. Any means may be employed for rotating the fan, though such is not illustrated.
Fixed to the shaft l4 and working within the top of the portion 6 is a fan 16 which operates to draw air through the chamber A and discharge such air under forced draft through the conduit 7, thepipe 8 and the branches 9 so that the interior of the barn or the like will be heated to a relatively high temperature or a temperature siiiiicient to properly'dry'out tobacco or the The air as it passes through the chamber A is particularly heated by contact with the partition 2, said partition being directly subjected to the, heat of the fire burning within the fire box B. In practice I find it of advantage to hold a fire Within the box B sufficient to maintain the partition 2 sub.- stantially at a red heat because under this condition it has been fully demonstrated in practice that the air discharged within the barn X or the like is of a temperature to best accomplish the results desired.
Leading from the fire box B at a point in close proximity to its inner or closed end is a flue 17 whereby the requisite draft is effected-to maintaiirthe fire within the box B and carry off the products of combustion.
