1 The present inventionrelates' to new and useful improvements in Arain shields and more particularly to alightweight portable rain shield adapted to lbe carried on the shoulders of a person vand adapted for use by mailmen, messengers and 'others who work -out Vof doors. l

An object of the invention-is to provide a device of this character which, when carried on the shoulders of the user, will still allo-w freedom of the hands and arms.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a wire cage adapted for supporting on the shoulders of a person and having a transparent cover through which the user can see clearly.

A still further object is to.y provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efiicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming lpart hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in position on the shoulders of a person.

Figure 3 is a side elevational view.

Figure 4 is a rear view.

Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on a line 5-5 of Figure 3.

Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken on a line 9-6 of Figure 4, and

Figure 7 is a perspective view of the frame of the rain shield with the attaching straps and cover removed.

Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein. for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 represents a pair of parallel leather shoulder straps whose lower ends are folded upon themselves to form loops 5. .A conventional leather belt l is placed through the loops I3 and around the waist of a person as shown in Figure 1.

A frame designated generally at 8 includes a pair oi parallel side members 9 that curve upwardly toward the rear to conform generally to the shoulders of a. person and then extend vertically upwardly as shown at i9 to a point II. The side members 9 are connected at i9 Aby a lower cross-bar I2 and said members are connected at point II by an upper cross-bar I3. At

Y 2 l l point l'I, the members'v 9 are extended forwardly and horizontally to @point I4 where they are Ainclined downwardly :to a ipoint I5 and are connectedV at point rI5Vby a cross-bar I 5a.v From point I5, the members'9 are inclined downwardly and inwardly to Vform a pair of spaced parallel vertical front rods I6 which are securedat their lower ends tothe starting end vII in any suitable manner. A crossbar I'Ia connects the starting and finishing ends of members 9.

A pair of spaced parallel L-shaped braces I8 havejtheir lower ends I9 secured in any suitable manner at 20 to the front rods I6. The corners oi the L-shaped braces are secured to the curved members 9 at 2l and the upper ends of the braces are connected to each other by a cross-rod 22.

The frame 8 is then placed on the shoulder straps so that the curved portion of member 9 lies on said straps as shown in Figure 2 and a second leather strap which forms a cover 23 is then placed on member 9 and is secured to the shoulder strap by stitching or the like 24 and the frame 8 is then held tightly to the shoulder strap as shown in Figure 5.

A protective waterproof transparent cover 25 is placed over the top of the frame 8 and is provided at its lower edges with a hem 26 joined to itself by stitching 21 for receiving cross-bar I2 and lower portion I9 of braces I8 to secure the cover on the frame. The protective cover is designed to conform to the upper portion of said frame and which constitutes a cage within which the head of the user is received through the lower open bottom of the cover.

The shoulder straps 5 support the shield in an upright position on the shoulders of the user and the belt strap 1 secures the shield substantially rigid in position on the upper portion of a persons body as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. In a device of the class described, a pair of shoulder straps having loops at their lower ends,

3 a belt carried by the loops, an upwardly extending frame carried by the forward portions of the straps, said frame including a pair of substantially parallel curved side members having vertical extensions, angularly inclined front rods secured to the curved members, a cross member connecting the extensions, a cross member secured to said front rods and substantially L-shaped brace members secured to the curved members and the front rods, cover straps placed over said curved side members and secured to the shoulder straps to hold the frame fixed to said shoulder straps, and a transparent waterproof cover secured to a portion of the frame andexr tending over the upper portion thereof. l 2. A rain shield comprising a wire frame lncluding a pair of parallel upwardly curved members adapted for resting on the shoulders of a person in front thereof, shoulder straps secured longitudinally along the curved members and eX- tending downwardly behind the shoulders, a belt connecting the front and rear lower ends of the straps, a wire cage structure carried. at the upper ends of the curved members and adapted for receiving the head of a person', and a transparent,

waterproof cover positioned on the cage structure, said wire cage including a pair of vertical extensions secured to said curved member,

angularly inclined front rods secured to the curved members, a cross member connecting said extensions, a second cross member secured to said front rods, substantially L-shaped brace members secured to said curved members and the front rods.
