Abstract
A NOVEL BABY-CARRIER WITHOUT RIGID FRAME

The invention relates to a baby-carrier devoid of a rigid frame, of the type having two pockets made from a woven material, one of which forming a seat for the baby is disposed inside the second, which completely envelops it and forms a protecting bag, shoulder straps or similar being provided for transporting this baby-carrier like a rucksack.
According to the invention, the seat-forming part comprises a folded portion intended to go between the legs of the baby to support it and comprising lateral flaps fixed on the corresponding face of the baby-carrier by a plurality of parallel seams, adapted to be unstitched by the user to fit said seat to the size of the baby.
Similarly, the bottom of the seat-forming part comprises a plurality of pleats adapted to be unstitched by the user to fit said seat to the size of the baby.

The invention relates to a baby-carrier devoid of a rigid frame, of the type having two pockets made from a woven material, one of which forming a seat for the baby is disposed inside the second, which completely envelops it and forms a protecting bag, shoulder straps or similar being provided for transporting this baby-carrier like a rucksack.
According to the invention, the seat-forming part comprises a folded portion intended to go between the legs of the baby to support it and comprising lateral flaps fixed on the corresponding face of the baby-carrier by a plurality of parallel seams, adapted to be unstitched by the user to fit said seat to the size of the baby.
Similarly, the bottom of the seat-forming part comprises a plurality of pleats adapted to be unstitched by the user to fit said seat to the size of the baby.
Description
The invention relates to a novel baby~carrier, devoid of a rigid frame, which the user may carry equally well on his back or in front of him.
There have already been proposed in the technique numerous baby-carriers of the dorsal or ventral type, fitted with a metal frame, secured by shoulder-straps to the user and supporting the child by means of cloth or si~ilar means. --~
Such baby-carriers have an excellent rigidity, but they have the disadvantage of being cumbersome, heavy and expensive, because of their metal frame. Furthermore, they cannot be folded into a small volume after use.
To overcome this disadvantage, baby-carriers have also been designed made from cloth or similar, devoid of a frame, which the user may thus easily fold up for storage purposes and ~hich are much less heavy to carry than the preceding ones.
A known type of such baby-carriers made from a woven material comprisegtwo separate pocket~ integral with each other through one of their walls, an internal pocket forming the baby-carrier properly speaking and co~prising openings through which pass the legs and possibly the arms of the baby, who may thus~move freely, whereas an external pocket completely surrounding the preceding one protects the child from the outside atmosphere and, in the case of a very young baby, contributes to supporting its limbs and more particularly its head.
It is with this type of baby-carrier that the precent invention is concerned and it aims at allowing one and the same baby-carrier to be used for children of different sizes and ages, by proposing simple and in-expensive mean~ for adjusting the dimensions of said pockets to the size of the baby. The invention aims also at increasing the safety f~r transporting the baby. It aim~ finally at allowing easy storage, in a small volume, of the baby-carrier.

1~23796 Accordingly, the present invention provides a foldable baby-carrier devoid of a rigid frame, of the type having two pockets made from a woven material, one pocket forming a seat for the baby, is disposed inside the second, which completely envelops it and forms a protecting bag, the upper part of said protecting bag being provided with a strap loop accommodating an adjusting strap therein, said strap comprising a plurality of pleats adapted to be unstitched by the user to adjust the size of the opening of said protect-ing bag, shoulder straps or similar being provided for transporting this baby-carrier like a rucksack, the seat-forming part comprising a folded portion intended to go between the legs of the baby for supporting it, the bottom of said seat-forming pocket comprising a plurality of pleats - adapted to be unstitched by the user to fit said seat to the size of the baby, said seat-forming pocket further comprising lateral flaps fixed on a corresponding face of the baby carrier by a plurality of pleats adapted to be unstitched by the user to adjust the size of the opening of said bag.
The opening of the bag may be adapted to the size of the child's head simply by unstitching the plurality of pleats of the adjusting strap.
So as to allow this adjustment of the opening of the pr~tecting bag to be made, while allowing easy opening and closing thereof, the part of the protecting bag fitted with s~ said adjusting strap comprises two parallel sliding fasteners allowing it to be partially disengaged from the rest of the baby-carrier, without interfering with the adjusting system.
For greater safety and to strengthen the attachment by means of these sliding fasteners, the part of said protect-ing bag fitted with the adjusting strap comprises, in its upper part, additional securing means on the body of the baby-''''' C
~ -3-~123796 carrier, said means comprising tabs fitted with friction securing systems of the type called "Velcro" (registered trademark) and/or snap fasteners.
Advantageously, a bib will be removably fixed by means of ribbons to the .'', ,:

~., ~, ~ s~ -3a-~ -inside of the baby-carrier. For reasons of hygiene, also, a pocket may be provided at the rear of the baby-carrier for receiving spare baby's napkin3, or diapers, or similar.
For safety's sake when the baby-carrier i~ used at night, different light reflecting ribbons will be preferably provided at the rear thereof and on the~adjustable shoulder-straps.
Other eharacteristics and advantages of the invention will appear in the detailed description which follows of one non limiting embodiment of this baby-carrier. In this description, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings in which :

The baby-carrier shown in Figs.~1 and 2 is made from a woven material, e.g. from washable cloth. It comprises a part 1 intended to bear . .
on the back or on the chest of the user, according as to whether he carries the baby carrier like a rucksack or like a ventral bag. Shoulder straps of adjustable length, in two parts 2a and 2b, are intende~ to go round the shoulders of the user.
Part 2a pa ses through a strap loop of a claw attachment 30 and i9 extended by a return piece 2c, which is fixed on part 2a in an adjustable position to enable the length of the shoulder strap to be adjusted by means of a buckle 31.
Part 2b is fitted with a buckle 32 for receiving the claw of attachment 30. This part 2b is intended to rest on the shoulder of the bearer and, so as not to cause painful strain, it is paaded inside with a flexible deformable material, e.g. a plastic foam. To this s~me end, part 2b is ex-tcn(lcd by a part 2d, also -pad~e~, on which bear the attachment 30 a~d bucklc 32.
~Z3796 On each of parts 2b there is provided a ribbon 33 of a light reflecting material, to allow the baby-carrier to be used at night without risk, thc ribbons 33 then reflecting the light from car headlamps and thus dra~ing the attention of motorists to the presence of the bearer of the baby-carrier.
As indicated above, the baby-carrier comprises two separate pockets, the external one 3 of which (Fig. 1) Iorms a protecting bae while the other 4 of which (Fig. 2) forms the seat in which the baby is sea~ed.
These two parts will now be described in more dctai].
~ ag 3 has a front face 5, connected laterally by two sliding fasteners 6 to sidewalls 7, themselves integral with part 1. It will be noted that ventilatibn. openings 8 are provided between wall 7 and part 1.
These openings 8 allow furthermore the child to pass his a~ns and legs there-through when he grows bigger. The upper part of this protecting bag is intended to support the head of the baby, which is very important in the c~se of a small child who is asleep. So that the upper openinG may be adjustable, in accordance with the invention, strap loop 9, in which is housed a strap 10, is provided in the upper part of face 5. When this baby-carrier iB put on sale, this strap 10 is tightened (Fig. 4) and the part located outside strap loop 9 comprises seams 11 forming pleats 12. To adapt the size of the upper opening of the baby-carrier to the size of the child, particularly as this latter grows up, all that is required is to remove successively the different pleats 12 to free a greater and greateI length of stnQp 10.
It will be noted that strap loop 9 is extended at both its ends by lateral tabs 1~, comprising on their internal face securing means which complete and reinforce sliding fasteners 6. As shown in Fig. ~, these additional securing means comprise, for example, f iction fixing means 14a ("Velcro") and snap fasteners 15a cooperating with complementary means 14b ,, and 15b carried by the adjacent wall 7. Other methods of securing, kno~m per :o, I~y of course be provided.
~123796 To allow articles of hygiene required for the care of the baby, particularly hygienic napkins, or diapers, to be easily transported, a pocke-t 16, closed by a sliding fastener 17, is provided on face 5.
Above this pocket, a strip of a light reflecting material 18 is fixed on face 5. This strip 18, like ribbons 33, thus reflects the light from car headlamps when the user is travelling at night with the baby-carrier , on his back, and thus reveals his presence to motorists, which increases safety of use.
Internal part 4 forming a seat~for the baby comprises a single strip of woven material folded upwards and aewn to part 1, whlle leaving passages 19 for th~ baby's legs. In accordance with the invention, Fart 4 is fixed to face 1 by a plurality of parallel seams 20, whereas the bottom of the seat comprises a plurality of pleats!21.
It will be readily understood that all that is required to adapt the dimensions of the seat to the size of the child, as this latter develops, is to remove one or more seams 20 and one or more pleats 21.
So that the child may be put in his seat and firmly heId there, a sliding fastener 22 is arranged longitudinally on part 4.
Advantageously, a bib 23 will be removably fixed to shoulder straps 2 by simple cotton strings 24.
The invention therefore provides a baby-carrier of a very simple design which may be adapted without effort tothe si~e of the child and which ,, may thus be used for several successive years, without the developmcnt of thc baby Oeing opposed thereto. It will be noted that the means propo~ed for tl1is purpose h~ve no metal part whose contact could be painful for a young child and might even injure him.
It will also be noted that this baby-carrier is easy to look after, for it may be washed and that it poses no problem for storage or for transporting, since it has no metal frame and since it may be folded into a compact shape limiting its bulk.

There have already been proposed in the technique numerous baby-carriers of the dorsal or ventral type, fitted with a metal frame, secured by shoulder-straps to the user and supporting the child by means of cloth or si~ilar means. --~
Such baby-carriers have an excellent rigidity, but they have the disadvantage of being cumbersome, heavy and expensive, because of their metal frame. Furthermore, they cannot be folded into a small volume after use.
To overcome this disadvantage, baby-carriers have also been designed made from cloth or similar, devoid of a frame, which the user may thus easily fold up for storage purposes and ~hich are much less heavy to carry than the preceding ones.
A known type of such baby-carriers made from a woven material comprisegtwo separate pocket~ integral with each other through one of their walls, an internal pocket forming the baby-carrier properly speaking and co~prising openings through which pass the legs and possibly the arms of the baby, who may thus~move freely, whereas an external pocket completely surrounding the preceding one protects the child from the outside atmosphere and, in the case of a very young baby, contributes to supporting its limbs and more particularly its head.
It is with this type of baby-carrier that the precent invention is concerned and it aims at allowing one and the same baby-carrier to be used for children of different sizes and ages, by proposing simple and in-expensive mean~ for adjusting the dimensions of said pockets to the size of the baby. The invention aims also at increasing the safety f~r transporting the baby. It aim~ finally at allowing easy storage, in a small volume, of the baby-carrier.

The opening of the bag may be adapted to the size of the child's head simply by unstitching the plurality of pleats of the adjusting strap.
So as to allow this adjustment of the opening of the pr~tecting bag to be made, while allowing easy opening and closing thereof, the part of the protecting bag fitted with s~ said adjusting strap comprises two parallel sliding fasteners allowing it to be partially disengaged from the rest of the baby-carrier, without interfering with the adjusting system.
For greater safety and to strengthen the attachment by means of these sliding fasteners, the part of said protect-ing bag fitted with the adjusting strap comprises, in its upper part, additional securing means on the body of the baby-''''' C

The baby-carrier shown in Figs.~1 and 2 is made from a woven material, e.g. from washable cloth. It comprises a part 1 intended to bear . .
on the back or on the chest of the user, according as to whether he carries the baby carrier like a rucksack or like a ventral bag. Shoulder straps of adjustable length, in two parts 2a and 2b, are intende~ to go round the shoulders of the user.
Part 2a pa ses through a strap loop of a claw attachment 30 and i9 extended by a return piece 2c, which is fixed on part 2a in an adjustable position to enable the length of the shoulder strap to be adjusted by means of a buckle 31.
Part 2b is fitted with a buckle 32 for receiving the claw of attachment 30. As indicated above, the baby-carrier comprises two separate pockets, the external one 3 of which (Fig. 1) Iorms a protecting bae while the other 4 of which (Fig. 2) forms the seat in which the baby is sea~ed.

To adapt the size of the upper opening of the baby-carrier to the size of the child, particularly as this latter grows up, all that is required is to remove successively the different pleats 12 to free a greater and greateI length of stnQp 10.
It will be noted that strap loop 9 is extended at both its ends by lateral tabs 1~, comprising on their internal face securing means which complete and reinforce sliding fasteners 6. As shown in Fig. ~, these additional securing means comprise, for example, f iction fixing means 14a ("Velcro") and snap fasteners 15a cooperating with complementary means 14b ,, and 15b carried by the adjacent wall 7. Other methods of securing, kno~m per :o, I~y of course be provided.

Above this pocket, a strip of a light reflecting material 18 is fixed on face 5. Internal part 4 forming a seat~for the baby comprises a single strip of woven material folded upwards and aewn to part 1, whlle leaving passages 19 for th~ baby's legs. In accordance with the invention, Fart 4 is fixed to face 1 by a plurality of parallel seams 20, whereas the bottom of the seat comprises a plurality of pleats!21.
It will be readily understood that all that is required to adapt the dimensions of the seat to the size of the child, as this latter develops, is to remove one or more seams 20 and one or more pleats 21.
So that the child may be put in his seat and firmly heId there, a sliding fastener 22 is arranged longitudinally on part 4.
Advantageously, a bib 23 will be removably fixed to shoulder straps 2 by simple cotton strings 24.
The invention therefore provides a baby-carrier of a very simple design which may be adapted without effort tothe si~e of the child and which ,, may thus be used for several successive years, without the developmcnt of thc baby Oeing opposed thereto. It will be noted that the means propo~ed for tl1is purpose h~ve no metal part whose contact could be painful for a young child and might even injure him.
It will also be noted that this baby-carrier is easy to look after, for it may be washed and that it poses no problem for storage or for transporting, since it has no metal frame and since it may be folded into a compact shape limiting its bulk.

Claims (8)
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A foldable baby-carrier devoid of a rigid frame, of the type having two pockets made from a woven material, one pocket forming a seat for the baby, is disposed inside the second, which completely envelops it and forms a protecting bag, the upper part of said protecting bag being provided with a strap loop accommodating an adjusting strap therein, said strap comprising a plurality of pleats adapted to be unstitched by the user to adjust the size of the opening of said protect-ing bag, shoulder straps or similar being provided for transporting this baby-carrier like a rucksack, the seat-forming part comprising a folded portion intended to go between the legs of the baby for supporting it, the bottom of said seat-forming pocket comprising a plurality of pleats adapted to be unstitched by the user to fit said seat to the size of the baby, said seat-forming pocket further comprising lateral flaps fixed on a corresponding face of the baby carrier by a plurality of pleats adapted to be unstitched by the user to adjust the size of the opening of said bag.
2. A baby-carrier according to claim 1, in which the part of said protecting bag fitted with said adjusting strap comprises two parallel sliding fasteners allowing it to be partially disengaged from said protecting bag.
3. A baby-carrier according to claim 2, character-ized in that the part of said protecting bag fitted with said adjusting strap comprises additional securing means for fastening said part to the protecting bag.
4. A baby-carrier according to claim 3, in which said additional securing means are carried by tabs forming extensions of said strap loop.
5. A baby-carrier according to claim 1, including shoulder straps in two parts adapted to be interlocked with each other by means of a claw attachment and buckle system, the lower part comprising a return piece whose length can be adjusted by means of a buckle.
6. A baby-carrier according to claim 5, in which the upper part of the shoulder straps which rests on the shoulders of the user is padded inside and is extended by a part, also padded, on which bears the claw attachment and buckle system.
7. A baby-carrier according to claim 1, 2 or 3, which comprises a bib removably fixed on the shoulder straps by means of strings.
8. A baby-carrier according to claim 1, which comprises ribbons made from a light reflecting material, fixed particularly on the external face of the bag-forming part and on said shoulder straps.
