Patented Aug. 2, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SMOKE ELIMINATOR FOR UNDERFEED STOKERS 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in smoke eliminator for underfeed stokers and has for an object to provide an improved device for use in conjunction with furnaces and stokers for eliminating smoke, particularly in the operation of a home coal stoker.
An object of the invention is to provide between the stoker and the furnace a flue for carrying off the smoke and a protection for the flue from the screw feed and coal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a unitary installation comprising an auxiliary flue mounted upon an insertible pipe section adapted to be included in the feed line from the stoker to the furnace and having a perforated or other form of protecting plate between the base of the flue and such section.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, in which like parts are denoted by the same reference characters throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a top plan view, with parts broken away, showing a furnace and stoker set up with an improved smoke eliminator constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same with a portion of the furnace and a portion of the auxiliary flue pipe broken away;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Figure 4;
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, Ml designates a furnace having a fire pot H and feed worm l2; and the stoker indicated generally at l3 having a coal hopper I4 and a feed worm l5. A feed pipe It connects the stoker with the furnace.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a pipe section I! of a nature to be included in the pipe l6 and for this purpose said pipe section I! is made with flanges l8 and I9 adapted to mate respectively with similar flanges and 2! upon the adjacent parts of the feed pipe H5, these flanges having bolts 22 and 23 for removably securing the same together.
The top of the pipe section I! is made with an aperture 24 surrounded by a circular vertical wall 25 from which is overturned at its upper end a substantial horizontal flange 26.
Upon such flange 26 is removably seated a similar flange 21, the flanges being adapted to be connected by bolts 28 extending at the side portions of the pipe section IT.
The flange 2'! is an outward annular extension of a perforated plate 29 traversed by multitudinous minute perforations, the axes of which are substantially vertical.
Between the perforated plate 29 and its horizontal flange 2! is a vertical flange 30 over which the auxiliary flue pipe 3| is adapted to fit rather snugly. The lower end of the auxiliary flue pipe 3! rests upon the horizontal flange 21'.
The two flanges 21 and 30 present an integral right angle structure to engage the end and inner wall of the flue pipe 3| so as to form an effective footing for such flue pipe 3|. The flue pipe and the flanges may be welded together.
The diameter of the perforations of the plate 29 may be such as to permit smoke and the draft to ascend freely up the auxiliary flue pipe 3| but to screen out the coal, either in lumps or soft, to prevent any loss of fuel and to compel the fuel to be directed to the furnace.
The upper end of the auxiliary flue pipe 3| may communicate with the conventional furnace flue pipe or it may open at a desirable high point directly to atmosphere.
With conventional apparatus, after a structure is in use for a season or two, the twyers may burn out, or the worm will become worn from use so that smoke and gas will feed back through the worm from the fire pot I I into the coal hopper l4. Again, if the householder fails to refill the hopper l4, smoke and. gas will pour out of the hopper to a greater degree than out of the conventional smoke pipe because there is a forced draft from the fan attached to the stoker. Very often there is delivered a load of coarse stoker coal which causes smoke and gas to feed back into the worm of the stoker and into the coal hopper regardless of the fact that the stoker may be in perfect condition.
In the use of the present invention, this feedback smoke and gas will be intercepted by the improved unit owing to the evacuating draft provided by the vertical flue 3| which sets up a material draft tending to constantly evacuate the feed pipe l6 of any smoke and gas that may be present therein. Consequently the new device provides a trap for the smoke and fumes and prevents such smoke and fumes from feeding back to the hopper l4.
It will be appreciated that the present device is extremely simple in construction and mode of operation. It may be sold as a unit separately from the furnace and stoker and sold at very reasonable cost. It may be installed by a novice but the cost of installation by a journeyman would be very small as the time element involved would be of short duration.
The device will eliminate smoke and gas entirely even with the hopper cover removed.
Even where the auxiliary flue pipe 3| is welded to the flanges 21 and 30, by removing the bolts 28, such flanges and the flue pipe may be lifted off the flange 26 to expose the opening 24 for any cleaning, inspection, and worm repair and replacement.
The right angle construction 21-30 also reinforces the plate 29 which is essentially weakened by the perforations therein.
While I have disclosed herein the best form of the invention known to me at the present time, I desire it to be understood that I reserve the right to make changes .and modifications in the herein described embodiment of the invention provided such changes 'fall within the scope of the following claim.
What I :claim is:
For use with-a furnace and its stoker, a smoke eliminator comprising a feed pipe for conveying coal from the stoker to the furnace, a pipe section, flanges on the pipe section and feed pipe for removably including the pipe section as a part of the feed pipe, said pipe section having an aperture in its upper :portion, a substantially annular second and third :named flanges.
