Application filed December 2, 1913. Serial No. 804,270. r I
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that l[, JAMES D. TIPPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Furnace Fire-Pots, of which the following is a specifications This invention relates to improvements in furnace fire pots and especially with reference to improvements in the construction of fire pots especially used in hot air furnaces, theobject of the invention being to provide a fire pot with liners which are detachable therefrom and which coact therewith to form air spaces between the liners and the fire pot to prevent the fire pot from being burned out and to also promote draft in the fire pot, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrange ment of devices hereinafter described and claimed. I
in the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fire pot constructed in accordance with my invention with some of the liners removed. Fig. 9 is a vertical sectional viewoi the same. Fig. 3 is a detail front elevation of one'of the liners.
in accordance with my invention the fire pot 1 which may be of any suitable size and shape is provided at its upper end with an inwardly extending annular flange 2 and is also provided on its inner side with an annular inwardly extending flange 3 which is spaced somewhat below the flange 2, so that an opening 4: is formed between said flanges. that of the flange 3 and the latter is overhung by the former. The upper side of the flange 3 is beveled or inclined downwardly and outwardly as at 5.
in combination with the fire pot I pro-,
vide a series of detachable liners 6 which are segmental in form and are here shown as having parallel side edges 7. Each liner is beveled on its front side at its upper end as at 8, the said bevel corresponding with the beveled face 9 of thefire pot flange 2. Each liner also has at its upper end on its outer side a supporting flange 10 which is inclined downwardly and outwardly and is adapted to be placed in the groove or opening 4 between the flanges 2 and 3 of the fire pot and the rest on the upper side of the The width of the flange? exceeds flange 3 so as to support and suspend the liner. Each liner is also provided near its lower end on its rear side with spacing lugs 11, two or more, to bear against the inner side of the fire pot and space the liner from the wall of the fire pot, the flange 3 of the fire pot also serving to space the liner from the fire pot so that an air space 12 is formed around the fire pot, on its inner side and between the fire pot and the liners. Each liner also has a suitable number of air openings 13 some of which are arranged centrally in the liners and others being space between the fire pot and the liners not only serves to protect the fire pot but also, in connection with the air openin s in the liners, serves to greatly promote t e draft 7 through the fuel in the fire pot. The overhanging flange 2 of the fire pot wall covers I and protects the upper ends of the liners andthe coacting inclined upper surfaces'of the supporting flange 3 and the supporting lugs 10 of the liners causes the liners to remain in place and their own weight prevents them from moving caus ually inward and from becoming casually displaced.
Having thus described my invention, it claim p The herein described fire pot having an inwardly extending supporting flange on its inner side and also having a fixed overlapping flange spaced above, wider than and overhanging said supporting flange, said supporting flange having an inclined upper side, in combination with a series of liners each having a supporting flange on its outer side at its upper end arranged in the space between the flanges of the fire pot, said supporting flange serving to suspend said lining member and each of said lining members fitting closely against the underside of the upper flange of the fire pot'and having its upper end protected thereby from the effects of heat and escape of ashes, the said liners also having outwardly projecting spacing lugs In testimony whereof I afiix my signature gear their lower ends bearing against the in presence of two Witnesses.-
re pot so that said liners are spaced by i said lugs and said supporting flanges from I JAMES TIPPLD' the fire pot, said liners being also provided Witnesses: with. air openings communicating with the W. B. BALLARD,
' space between them and the fire pot. B. S. SNELL. v
