Description

Patented Aug. 2, 1949 DISPLAY PACKAGE Edwin W. Fuerst, Toledo, Ohio, assignor to Dow 'Corning Corporation, Midland, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Application May .20, 1948, Serial No. 28,162 2 Claims. (Cl. 206 45.28)
V 7 The present invention relates to a shipping and counter display package.
In general, desirable counter display racks, which heretofore have been used, frequently have not been particularly suitable for use as shipping containers. It is desirable to have shipping containers which do provide good counter display.
A- principal object of the present invention is the provision of shipping containers which are of utility for counter display purposes. A further object of the present invention is to provide a package which when opened, automatically opens display panels to displaying position.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be obvious from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the display package hereof in opened position,
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2--2 in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 3--3 in Fig. 2 but with the package in closed position.
In the form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings, the container is constituted of a flanged lower box section 5 and a flanged lid section 6 to fit over the lower section 5. The lid 6 is attached to the section 5 by a hinge I to provide for movement of the lid from closed position of the container to the open position shown in Fig. 1.
A display insert is provided which is constituted of a panel 8 to lie in the bottom of section 5. The panel 8 is hingedly connected to a movable display panel 9. These two panels are formed of a. single piece of resilient material such as paste board and the hinging between the two sections may be by folding along the lines l and II. The display insert is so positioned in the sections and 6 that the hinged connection between panels 8 and 9 is parallel to and adjacent to the hinge I connecting the sections 5 and 6. Two auxiliary display panels l2 are provided which are hingedly connected to the sides of panel 9 along lines perpendicular to the fold lines l0 and I I. Each of the panels I2 is an integral portion of the display insert and may be integrally formed of the same sheet of material with the hinged connection between the panels l2 and the panel 9 being formed by two fold lines M at each side of panel 9.
A flexible connector l5, as for example a cord, is secured to the flange at each side of the lower box section 5 at a point spaced from the hinge 7. The cords l5 extend slidably through openings in 2 the side flanges of the lid 5 at points spaced from the hinge l. The other ends of the cords l5 are anchored in the auxiliary display panels I 2 at points spaced from the fold lines I l.
The box including the lower section 5 and lid 6, and the display unit are so proportioned that in open position the edge of display panel 9, remote from panel 8, fits within the flange of lid 6, whereby to block movement from open position. The display panel 9 is of a width less than the width of the lid 6, whereby pull of the cord l5 by opening the box can pull the auxiliary display panels l2 to opened position, inasmuch as turning of the panels 12 to opened position shortens the section of the cord between the panels l2 and the lid. The cords l5 are of such a length between their anchors in section 5 and in display panels l2 that movement of the box to fully open position will turn the auxiliary display panels I 2 into opened positions for the display of merchandise, with the auxiliary display panels being moved into extended position beyond the sides of lid 6.
With the box in the closed position shown in Fig. 4, when the lid is initially opened by movement about the hinge 1, the lid initially moves upward but does not move the display unit. When the lid is partially opened, the cord I 5 becomes taut and thereupon further movement of the lid efiects raising of panels 9 and 12. When these panels have thereby been raised suii'iciently that the panels l2 are clear of the lower box section, the cords l5 move the panels l2 to extended or opened position by virtue of the cords I5 sliding through the openings in the flanges of the lid 6. When the box lid is fully opened, the display panel 9 is substantially coter minous with the lid at the upper edges thereof and may be placed within the flange of the lid whereby the display is positively held in open position.
One of the outstanding features of the present display package is that the display unit may be laid flat on a bench and the merchandise secured thereto. The entire unit may then be folded and placed in the box constituted of sections 5 and 6. The assembly of the cords [5 as described then completes the package ready for shipping. No gluing or other permanent securing of the display unit within the box is necessary. It is obvious however, that if desired the display unit may be permanently secured in the lower box section, in which case the extension of panel 8 throughout the lower section 5 is unnecessary. Thus, the portion of the panel 9 3 between fold. II and the bottom of the box may be permanently secured to the rear flange of section 5.
Having now described my invention, that which is claimed is:
1. A shipping and counter display package comprising a box constituted of a lower flanged section and a flanged lid to fit thereover and being hingedly connected together, a display unit which comprises a main display panel hingedly connected adjacent and parallel to the hinge connection of the box for movement about the hinge connection of said panel with respect to the lower section of the box, a pair of auxiliary display panels hingedly connected to said main display panel along an edge of each perpendicular to the hinge connection of said main display panel, cords anchored at their ends to said lower section of the box and to said auxiliary display panels at points spaced from the hinge connections thereof which cords are slidably connected with said lid, said slidable connection of said cords being at a midpoint in the length of the cord between the anchored ends thereof whereby upon opening of the box the display panels are moved about their hinged connections to positions with the main display panel within the lid of said box and the auxiliary display panels in extended position.
2. A shipping and counter display package comprising a box constituted of a lower flanged section and a flanged lid to fit thereover and being hingedly connected together, a display unit readily removable from said box and which comprises a base panel which fits in said lower section, a main display panel hingedly connected adjacent and parallel to the hinge connection of the box for movement about the hinge connection of said panel with respect to the lower section of the box, a pair of auxiliary display panels hingedly connected to said main display panel along the edges thereof perpendicular to the hinge connection of said main display panel, cords anchored at their ends to said lower section of the box and to said auxiliary display panels at points spaced from the hinge connections thereof which cords are slidably connected with said lid, said slidable connection of said cords being at a midpoint in the length of the cord between the anchored ends thereof, the Width of said main display panel between said auxiliary display panels being less than the width between the flanges of said lid, whereby upon opening of the box the display panels are moved about their hinged connections to a position with the main display panel within the lid of said box and the auxiliary display panels in extended position.
