8 Claims. (Ci. 16-163) This invention relates to hinges.
. It is an object of this invention to provide an improved hinge which is relatively simple and inexpensive in construction and emcient in use.
5 Another object of this invention is to provide an improved combination hinge and support for the top covers or lids of cedar chests or analogous devices or containers.
The hardware used on the inside of cedar chests i is subject to deposits of cedar oil which is sticky and by reason of this fact difliculty has been experienced in the use of prior art hinges for this purpose which employ a sliding action.
Another object of the present invention, therep i fore, is to provide a new hinge for use in conjunction with cedar chests and which is not aiiected by the action of cedar oil which is used in conjunction with cedar chests; to provide a hinge which is economical in use by reason of the fact that the new hinge does not require mortising in the wood of the chest to install the same; and to provide a hinge in which the working parts are enclosed so as to give it a neat appearance and to prevent the clothing from being caught in the hinge and being torn.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved hinge for closure members such as, for example, the tops of chests or othe containers.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a view, partly in section and partly in side elevation, showing a preferred form of the new hinge used for the purpose of supporting the top of a cedar chest of the type which employs a so-called dust strip, and showing the parts of the new hinge in the relative position which they assume when the top is in raised position;
Fig. 2 is a detail view partly in section and partly in elevation and is taken along line 22 in Fi 1;

A preferred form of the new hinge is shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings, is therein generally indicated at H), and is shown in one of its preferred uses, namely, as used in conjunction with the top or closure member oi a cedar chest, which is generally indicated at H, the chest II comprising a container body which includes side walls l2, a, rear wall l3, and a top II, the rear wall I3 of the chest having an upper end. portion l5 which projects before the upper surface of the top I 4 when the latter is in raised position, as is shown in Fig. 3, this upward extension l5 of the rear wall l3 forming what is known as a so-called back rail or dust strip which forms a, seal between the top and the walls of the chest when the top is in lowered position, as is shown in Fig. 3.
The new hinge l0 comprises a flanged housing it which is secured to the side wall l2 of the chest I l, on the inner side of the same, by means of suitable attaching elements such as screws ll; this housing l6 having an open upper end l8.
Arranged within the housing I6 is a member l9 which is pivotally mounted at one end, as at 20. upon the side wall 2| of the housing It, one end portion of this member l9 being pivotally connected, as at 22, to a link 23. This link 23 is pivotally connected, between its ends, as at 24, to a link 25, one end portion of the link 23 being pivotally mounted, as at 26, upon a laterally projecting flange2l of a bracket or plate 28 which is attached, by means 0! screws 29, to the top H of the chest, and on the under side of said top.
The new hinge l0 includes a member 3i which is pivotally mounted at one end, as at 30, on the flanged extension 21 of the attaching plate or bracket 28, and this member 3| is pivotally connected, at its other end, as at 32, to the link 25,
"this link 25 being pivotally mounted, as at 33, upon the side wall 2! of the casing l5, and this link 25 has, at its lower end, a lateral projection or flange 34 which is adapted to engage under 5 and against the lower or rear edge 35 01' the link 23, when the top i4 is in raised position (Fig. 1). When the top l4 of the chest II is in lowered position, as in Fig. 3, the new hinge I0 is collapsed in the housing l5, as is shown in Fig. 3. Howit) ever, when the top is lifted into raised posil0 and the top 14 and thereby retaining the hinge =l0 in'extended'position and the top I4 of the chest in raised position.
When the top 14 islowered the several parts of the hinge III will again collapse back into their normal position in the housing l6, as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be noted that the new hinge I0 is composed of' a system 'of pivotally mounted and inter-connected members 19 and 3| and links 23 and 25, which work freely about their pivotal points, and which are normally concealed in the housing l6 when notin use, by reason of this fact the new hinge is not affected by the cedar oil which is'used in conjunction with'cedar chests and which tends to cause hinges having a sliding construction to stick and operate with dimculty. Moreover, the new hinge I0 may be readily installed in position of use by merely inserting the screws l1 and hence requires no mortising in the wood of the chest to install the same, and it will likewise be noted that when the new hinge I0 is in collapsed position, as in Fig. 3, its several parts are housed within the casing or housing l6 and are thus prevented from coming into contact with clothing and like articles which may be stored in the chest II. It will likewise be noted that the new hinge I9 is neat and compact in appearance.
A modified form of the present invention is shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive and this form of the new hinge is substantially similar to the preferred form of the invention, shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, except that this modified form of the invention is designed for use in conjunction with this type of cedar chest which does not employ the so-called back rail or sealing strip (indicated at IS in Figs. 1 and 3) and which forms a part of the chest with which the preferred form of the present hinge is associated, and which is shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, the new hinge is generally indicated at 35, and is shown as used in conjunction with a cedar chest or container 31 which comprises side walls 38', a rear wall 39, and a top or closure member 40. This form of the invention comprises a member 44 which is arranged within a housing 41, this member 44 being pivotally mounted at one end, 'as at 48, upon the side wall 49 of the housing 41. The other end portion of this member 44 is pivotally connected, as at 50, to a link 43 and this link 43 is pivotally connected, as at 5|, to a flange 46 of a bracket 7 or attaching plate 45 which is secured to he top 49 of the chest by means of screws 52. Likewise pivotally attached to the flange- 45 oi'the plate 45, as at 53, is a-member 4|, this member 4| being pivotally connected, as at 54, to a link 'members and links 44-4l-42 and 43 are identical, respectively to the members and links l9- 3l-25 and 23, respectively, which are embodied in preferred form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4; and-in this modified tom of the invention, shown in Figs. 5, 6, '7 and 8, the lateral projection 51 of the link 42 is identical in structure and function to the projecting portion 34 oi the link 25 which is embodied in'the preferred form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4. i v
The modified form of the present invention, shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, is substantially the same as the preferred form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in fact identical thereto, except for the construction of the casing or housing 41, which diilers slightly in construction from the casing or housing IS, in that the casing or housing 41 has a flange 58 which is attached to the rear wall 39 of the chest 31 by a screw 59, this modified form of the invention being identical to the preferred form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 except for the abovementioned slight change in the construction of the housing 41. and for the slight difference in the manner of mounting the said housing 41 within the chest 37 as may be seen by comparing Figs. 1 and 7 or Figs. 2 and 8.
The parts of the modified form 36 of the new hinge, are shown in Figs. 7 and 8 in the position which they assume when the top 40 of the chest is in raised position and they are shown in Figs. 5 and 6, in the position which they assume when the top 40 of the chest is in lowered position, and inwhich latter position they are collapsed into the housing 49.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set 'iorth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: l
1. A hinge comprising an attaching member and a housing member in the form of a recessed plate, a first pair of links connecting said members and a second pair of links connecting said members, the said first and second pairs being pivctally joined, and a link of one said pair having a laterally oflset portion engageable with the edge of the link otthe other said pair in a manner to limit the movement of said links in a direction away from said housing member.
2. A hinge comprising a pivot plate attachable to a closure membena housing in the form of a recessed plate adapted for attachment to a closurereceiving member with the recessed side against Cal such receiving member, a first pair oi substantially straight arms joined by a common pivot and pivoted at their extremities respectively to said pivot plate and to said housing, a second pair of arms similarly pivoted and joined to the said plate and housing and pivotally Joined to said first pair of arms, the said armsand pairs being extensible in a substantially co-linear direction when a said closure is disposed openly-oi a said closure-receiving member, and being collapsible into the recessed part of said housing when said closure and closure-receiving member are in closed relation.
3. A hinge for the closure member of a container body, comprising an attaching plate adapted to be secured to said closure member on the inner side of the same a housing adapted to be attached to said container body adjacent said closure member, a member having an end portion pivotally connected to said attaching plate, a member having an end portion pivotally mounted in said housing upon a wall of the same, a link having one end portion pivotally connected to said attaching plate and having its other end portion pivotally connected to said second-named member, and a second link having one end portion pivotally mounted in said housing upon a wall of the same and having its other end portion pivotally connected to said first-named member, said links being pivotally connected to each other between their ends. one said link having an oilset part limiting the pivotal movement'of said links in a given direction each relative to the other and both of said links and second and third mentioned members being collapsible into said housing when the said closure member is in closed position.
4. A hinge comprising an attaching member adapted to be secured to a closure member, a 40 second attaching member adapted to be secured to a support which is disposed adjacent to and which is stationary relative to, said closure member, the said second attaching member being in g the form of a recessed plate having an open side and mounting fianges extended co-planarly with the said open side and an edgewise opening communicating with the recessed part of the plate, a first arm pivotally attached to said attaching member, a second arm pivotally attached to said second attaching member or plate and a pair of links pivoted together intermediate their respective extremities and each of said links respectively having an end portion pivotally connected with an end portion of said first and second arms, the said links having their respective opposite extremities pivotally attached to said attaching member and to said second attaching member such that the said arms and links are foldable into the recessed part of said second attaching member or plate through the edgewise opening thereof when the said closure member is moved toward said support.
5. A hinge comprising an attaching member adapted to be secured to a closure member, a sec- 0nd attaching member adapted to be secured to a support which is disposed adjacent to and which is stationary relative to. said closure member, the said second attaching member being in the form of a recessed plate having an open side and mounting flanges exte ded co-planar y with the said open side and having an edgewise opening communicating with the recessed part of the plate, a first arm pivotally attached to said attaching member, a second arm pivotally attached to said second attaching member or plate and a pair oi links pivoted together between their respectiveextremlties and said links having one of their end portions pivotally connected with an end portion of said first and second arms respectively, the said links having their respective opposite extremities pivotally attached'to said first attaching member, and to said second attaching member the said links 'and arms being adapted to fold into said second attaching member or recessed plate through the edgewise opening thereof when the said closure member is moved toward said support, the said link which is pivotally attached to said second attaching member having a laterally extended ear engageable with an edge portion of the other said link when the said arms and links are pivoted away from said second attaching member so as to limit their movement in that direction.

A hinge comprising an attaching member adapted to be secured to a closure member, a second attaching member adapted to be secured toa support which is disposed adjacent to and which is stationary relative to, said closure member, the said second attaching member being in the form of a recessed plate having an open side and mounting flanges extended co-planarly with the said open side and an edgewise opening communicating with the recessed part of the plate,- a first arm pivotally attached to said attaching member, a second arm pivotally attached to said second attaching member or plate and a pair of links pivoted together intermediate their respective extremities and each of said links respectively having an end portion pivotally connected with an end portion of said first and second arms,
the said links having their respective opposite extremities pivotally attached to said attaching member and to said second attaching member such that the said arms and links are foldable into the'recessed part of said second attaching member or plate through the edgewise opening thereof when the said closure member is moved toward said support, the said link which is attached to said second attaching member having an ofiset ear engageable with an edge of the other said link when the links and arms are pivoted in a direction away from said second attaching member, and having a second ofiset portion underlying a surface of the said first offset portion to reinforce the latter.

A hinge comprising an attaching member and a housing member in the form of a recessed plate having attaching flanges extended co-planarly therewith, a pair of edgewise openings at an angle to one another and communicating with the recessed part of the plate and one of said edgewise openings having an attaching flange extended at an angle to the plane of said plate whereby the said attaching member may be fitted for attachment into the corner portion of a support, two pairs of links joining said members, one link of each of said pairs being commonly pivoted with a link of the other said pair intermediate their respective extremities, one of said commonly pivoted links having an ofiset portion engageable with an edge of the other said commonly pivoted link to limit the pivotal movement of said link pairs in a direction away from said housing, and the said link pairs being foldable within the recessed part of said housing through one of the edgewise openings thereof.
8. A multiple pintle hinge including an attaching member and a housing member in the form of a recessed plate having an edgewise opening communicating with the recessed part thereof, a first arm pivoted to said attaching member,- a second arm pivoted within the recessed part or saidhousing, a iirst link pivotaily connectedto said first arm and to said housing in the recessed part thereof, a second link pivoted to said attaching member and to said secand arm, said first and second links being pivotaily joined intermediate their respective extremities and one of said links having an upset 1o portion engageable with an edge oi the other when the attaching member is moved toward EDWIN NORTH. 10
