Claims. 1
This invention relates to toy pistols of the automatic or repeating type, and is an improvement over my former Patent No. 2,088,891, dated August 3, 1937.
One of the general objects of the invention is to provide a repeater type toy pistol simulating the old style of pistols used by frontiersmen and cowboys wherein the spent cartridges were ejected from the cylinder by manipulating a plunger or the like. In that connection, the invention contemplates a toy pistol of the cap magazine type having a magazine cover including a cylinder simulating portion, the said cover being hinged on an axis parallel with the barrel and normally held in closed position by sliding latch means simulating a plunger associated with the barrel and keeper means carried by the front portion of the cover.
Another object of the invention is to provide a slidable latch means which is completely and adequately housed and supported within the barrel of the toy insofar as its operating parts are concerned, but which has an external fingerengaging portion projecting through a slot in the barrel for manipulation with respect to the keeper socket in the cover section.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy pistol including the present improvements; the sections of the barrel being separated to show the latch means and its mounting in the barrel;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view, partly in section, showing the latch means in greater detail;
Figure 3 is a front elevation showing the magazine cover in open position;
Figure 4 is a detail vertical section taken on the line 44 of Figure 2.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the toy pistol comprises a body designated generally as A, and including the handle or stock portion H; the barrel B extending forwardly of the cap magazine M which is open and closed by the cover 0 which is hinged on an axis l 2 parallel to the axis of the barrel B and spring biased to open position by a coil spring 2.
The cover C carries the cylinder D and said cover and cylinder are of the type shown in my former patent except that the cover C is provided at its upper front corner with a recess 3 whose bottom wall is provided with a keeper socket 4i opening into the upper portion of the barrel B and concealed by the outer wall portion of the recess.
For convenience in manufacture, the barrel B is preferably made in two mating longitudinal sections 5 and 6. As will be seen from the drawings, the section 5 is secured at its rear end to the body A :by the fastening 5 and the section 6 is secured to section 5 as will hereinafter appear. The said section 5 is provided substantially medially thereof with a pair of spaced abutments l and 8, and is also provided near the body end with a guide member 9 thereby to slidably support and guide the pin or shank portion I0 of the latch means relative to the keeper socket 4 in the magazine cover 0. The said latch means, as will now be apparent, is preferably in the form of a bolt whose shank portion I0 is mounted in and concealed by the barrel, said shank having at its forward end a substantially right-angularly disposed oifset arm portion ll projecting through a slot I2 formed by complemental notches in the sections 5 and 6 of the barrel and provided with a finger gripping portion 13. The arm portion ll of the latch means is located between the abutments l and 8 and is provided on its front side with a post l4 slidably guided in the abutment l which is so shaped or formed as to receive the "post. In order to prevent undue looseness and subsequent rattle of the latch means in the barrel, the abutment l, which serves as a guide, cooperates with an oifset abutment IE on the barrel section 6. The post I4 is surrounded by a coil spring l6 confined by the inwardly facing portions of the abutment 1 and the arm portion ll of the latch element. Thus, it will be seen that the latch element, including the parts I 0, II and I3, is normally urged rearwardly bythe spring l6 so that the end of the shank will readily engage with the keeper socket 4 on the magazine cover.
The section 6 of the barrel B is provided with inwardly extending abutments 8 and 9' which serve as complements to the abutment 8 and guide member 9, respectively to assist in forming a complete guideway for the shank III of the latch bolt. The section 6 of the barrel also user to push the finger piece I3 toward the front of the barrel against the force of the spring l6 thereby to move the latch element 'su-fficiehtly to have its free end disengaged from-the socket of,
the cover. When this takes place, the cover C will automatically swing toopen position, since,-
as previously indicated, it is spring biasedto such position and is hinged. on an axis parallel to the axis of the barrel. To assure easy engage ment'of the latch means with the socketythe inner end of the shank ID'is beveled or otherwise formed so as to insure its free passage over the edge of the recess 3 and into the keeper socketd on the'cover.
Without further description it is believed that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of. com struction may be resorted to without departing from'the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A, toy cap pistol of the repeating type, including, a body having a "magazine chamber, barrel having a slot, a magazine eoverpivoted to the body parallel to the axis of the barrel, said cover having a keeper socket, and spring controlled latch means slidably supported within the barrel of the pistol and having an operating portion projecting through said slot of the bar rel for manipulating the latch relative'to the said keeper socket on the cover.
2. 'A toy cap pistol of the repeating type, ineluding, a body having a magazine chamber and a barrel provided with a slot extending forwardly thereof, a cover hinged to one side of the body on an axis parallel to the axis of the barrel, said cover simulating a portion of a cylinder and having a keeper socket concealed in the forward end thereof and in line with the bore of the barrel, and a spring-controlled latch bolt slidably mounted within the barrel for movement relative to'said keepersocket, and means on said latch bolt'extending through said slot and exteriorly of the barrel for manually manipulating said bolt.
3. A cap pistol, including, a body having a cap magazine, a cover for the cap magazine hinged to the body and spring urged to open position relative to the magazine, said cover having a keeper socket therein, a barrel on the body extending forwardly of the coverand having a slot,
latch means slidable in the barrel and spring urged toenter said socket to hold the cover section closed, and a finger-engaging element carried by said latch means and projecting through said slot, whereby when said element is manually manipulated the latch means will be withdrawn from said keeper socket and the cover section will automatically move to open position,
4. A cap pistol, including, a body having a cap magazine, a cover for the cap magazine hinged to the body and spring urged to open position relative to the magazine, said cover having a keeper socket therein, a barrel on the body extending forwardlyof the body and having a slot,

5. A cap pistol, including, a stock portion having a capmagazine, a cover for-the cap magazine hinged to the stock portion: and spring-pressed to open position relative to the magazine, said cover simulating a section of a cylinder and hav ing a keeper socket therein, a barrel extending forwardly of the cylinder section and having a slot, a pair of abutmentsformed in the barrel at each side of said slot, guide means alsoformed in the barrel adjacent the cover section, and a latch element within the barrel and comprising an elongated body having one-end supported on said guide means and provided at its opposite end withan angularly disposed finger piece located between said abutments, a post carried by the angular finger piece of the latch member and slidable in one of said abutments, a spring mounted on said post and confined between the angular portion of the finger piece and'the abutment in which the post is slidably-guide d'; said finger piece having a portion projecting through the slot for manual manipulation to release the latch element from the keeper socket. of the cover.
