Application July 15, 1941, Serial No. 402,523
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a bolt action pump gun, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the bolt of a bolt action gun can be manipulated by a slide member which operates similar to a pump gun so that the great strength of a bolt action is secured and at the same time the rapidity of operation of a bolt action gun is increased.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a gun constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevational view but showingthe bolt in retracted position.
Figure 3 is a view of the front end of the bolt of the gun showing the cartridge extractor carried by a sleeve rotatably arranged on the bolt.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a front end View of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a view of the slotted plate attached to one side of the gun.
Figure 7 is a view of the yoke which is pivoted to the bolt lever.
Figure 8 is an edge view of the yoke.
Figure 9 is a rear view thereof.
Figure 10 is a view of the pin used for pivoting the yoke to the lever.
Figure 11 is a front view of the rear end of the slide member. I
Figure 12 is a rear view of said end of the slide lever.
Figure 13 is a view in transverse section taken on the line l3--l3 of Figure 2, and drawn to an enlarged scale.
In these views the gun is shown at A and its sliding bolt is shown at B, the lever of the bolt being shown at a, the front end of the firing pin is shown at b and oppositely arranged lugs I and 2 are connected to the front of the bolt for sliding in grooves I, 2' in the bolt chamber of the gun. A collar 3 rotatably fits in a groove in the bolt adjacent the front end thereof and the extractor lever 4 is pivoted to an ear 5 on the collar as shown at 6, a spring I engages the rear end of the lever for holding it in position engaging the rear end of the cartridge. The lug V I normally fits in a recess in the lever 4. A lug 8 extends from the collar and is arranged opposite the ear 5 and this lug as well as the lug 2 have slots 9, 9' therein so that if the cartridge should stick a knock out pin can be passed through these slots to strike the cartridge to dislodge the cartridge sidewise from the extractor when the bolt is open. As will be understood portions of the grooves l, 2 in the-bolt chamber into which the lugs I, 2, 8 and the lever 4 move when the bolt is beingmoved to operated position, have right angular extensions I", 2" for receiving the'lugs I and 2 so that these lugs will turn into these right angular extensionswhen the bolt is turned by the lever. However, the lug 8 remains in the straight part of its groove so that the sleeve is prevented from turning and thus the extractor lever remains in its groove during turning movement of the bolt. HA plate I0 is fastened to. the right hand side of the breech of the gun and the top part of the plate has an elongated notch ll therein for clearing the top part of the breech to permit the ejection and insertion'of a cartridge and this plate is provided with an elongated slot I2 and a slot I3 has a longitudinally extending part and a wide downwardly extending part I 3. A yoke member M has bearings I5 in the upper ends of its prongs for receiving a pin I6 which passes through an arcuate slot I! in the free end of the bolt lever a. A spring-pressed dog l8 in the pin acts to hold the pin in place but by depressing this dog the pin can be moved to release the yoke from the lever. By having the pin pass through an arcuate slot I! of the lever binding between said lever and yoke is prevented during a straight up and down motion of the yoke.
A block-like lug H! is formed on the inner face of the yoke adjacent the lower end thereof and this lug slides in the longitudinal part of the slot l3 and moves downwardly into the vertical part l3 when the parts are being manipulated to close the bolt. A projection 20 of circular shape in cross section is connected to the front of the yoke. A slide bar 2| has an offset rear end 22 which forms an inner shoulder 23 of substantially Z-shape. This offset part has a downwardly and rearwardly extending part 24 connected therewith which is formed with an arcuate slot 25 in which the projection 20 of the yoke fits. In front of the shoulder 23 the inner face of the slide bar 2| is formed with a lug 2B which operates in the slot l2 of the plate I0.
ment the lug I9 will move upwardly in the part l3 of the slot until the lug comes. opposite. the. straight part. I53. When, this occurs the pin- 21!; is in the top part of the slot 25 so that further movement of the bar 2| causes the yoke to move,
rearwardly with the lugs l9 and 26 moving through the longitudinal slots l2 and l3' and this, of course, moves the bolt B rearwardlx so.
as to open the breech and cause the extractor 4 to extract the fired cartridge.
is moved forwardly until it reaches closed position and then. the. arcuate slQ 2.51 engaging; the: pin, 211 causes. the. yoke. to; move; downwardlyso, as. to partly'turn theholt, to lock-it: in position.
The; Shoulder 23.. on; the. slideban- 2:! will abut.
and: Lock againstone side of the yokeiwheni the gun; action is: operated and. thiSi shoulder exerts; pressure! on, the: yoke during the. opening; move-- ment.
Thus it will: beseen. that-.1 havev provided: a
pump: actionfor; a. bolt action. of? a. gun so: that.
he bolt can be easily and. quickly-moved: tov openand'. closed. position simply moving.- the. rod 2.1. .rearwardlyand forwardly;
It: is thought from the. foregoing description that. the: advantages and novel; features of the.
invention. will. be; readily apparent;
Then upon forward sliding movement of the bar 2| the bolt.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
-1. In a bolt action gun, a-bolt having a lever thereon, an arcuate slot in the lever, a yoke having, its, upper end forked, a. pin passing, through the, prongs and through: the arcuate slot in the lever, a part of the gun having a pair of longitudinally extending slots therein, one of which has a depending part, a lug on the inner face oftheyokeengaging said one slot and the depending, pant therein, a slide member having an arcuate, camming slot in its rear end, a pin on the outer faceof the yoke engaging the slot camming, a lug on the slide member engaging the other slot of said pair and means for reciprqoating the slide member.
2'. In a. bolt. action gun, abolt having eleven,
invention, what is a yoke. pivoted to the lever, a plate connected with the breech: ofr theigunand. having av pain of longitudinally extending slots. therein, one. of which: is provided; with a depending front pore tiom a lug on the inner faceof the-yokeengaging said one slot, a pin; projecting; from the: front.
face, of the: yoke, aslidemember supported on the. gun. and; having anarcuate camming slotin its. rear end for receiving the pin, a. lug on the slide, member engaging the othen slot; of. said: pair." and: means forreciprocating the slide. mem-' ber.
