UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY R. PLIMPTON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SOFA OR LOUNGE BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,683, dated September 27, 1881.
Application filed April 7, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY R. PLIMPTON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Sofaor Lounge Beds, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the combination, with the back andbase of a sofa or lounge bed, of re-entering toggles, flexible spring-plates, and a cord, operating together, substantially in the manner as will be hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is an end elevation, showing my device as applied to a sofa or lounge bed. Fig. 2' is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 shows, in detail, a thin metallic plate, one end of which is to be made fast to the back of the sofa or lounge, while one corner of the other end is turned up, so that a cordor chain attached to it may, when pulled, serve to turn it partly on edge, and thus pry away the center of the toggle, as shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 4 shows the central part of one of the toggles and a section of the metallic plate for throwing out the central joint of the toggle, and thus allowing the back to be turned down.
A and B represent the base and back of a sofa or lounge bed. To the base I pivot a link, D, at G, and to the back I pivot a link, D, at O, the two links D and D being pivoted together at M, so as to form a toggle when the back is up, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This pivot M passes beyond the line which connects O and U, (see Fig. 1,) so that pressure on the back of the sofa or lounge will cause the center of the toggle to press against the back, or in the direction indicated by the arrow atT, Fig. 1. Thus the toggle device, which in the dotted lines of Fig. 1 is a leg and legthis plate, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Now, I
as this plate H K underlies the toggle, it is evident that it the cord L is pulled it will twist the lower edge of the plate upward and outward, and thus force the toggle away from the back, as shown in Fig. 4. This will throw the joint outside of the line of centers, and then the toggle will be free to bend outward, and thus allow the back of the sofa or lounge to be turned down.
I do not claim the toggles as such, nor in combination with the back of a sofa or lounge.
My invention consists in so locating the center or pivot upon which the links of the toggleturn that when the back is up the toggles become re-entering and self-supporting.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I desire-to secure by Letters Patent is In a sofa or lounge bed, the combination of the back B, base A, and the re-entering toggle D D with the flexible spring-plate H K and cord L, all operating together substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY RICHARDSON PLIMPTON.
