My invention relates to improvements in looks for doors, and the like, the primary object in view being to provide an all-purpose, safety lock of the cylinder lock type which is simple in construction, involves few parts, will not readily get out of order, is tamper-proof, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other and subordinate objects, also comprehended by my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements and the manifold advantages thereof, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are :read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, my improved lock, in the illustrated, preferred embodiment thereof comprises a casing I adapted to be mortised, in the usual manner, into the front edge of a door 2 and comprising a U-shaped frame bar 3, a pair of front and rear check plates 4, secured by screws 6 to the opposite sides of said bar 3, and a front mortise plate I, of the usual type, for the front edge of the door 2 and from which plate the frame bar 3 extends horizontally with the cheek plates 5 secured'thereto 5 and with the free front ends of said frame bar 3 secured in said plate I by tongues 8 extending into and suitably fixed in slots 9 in said plate i. As will be understood, the frame bar 3 forms the top, bottom and rear end of the casting I. The mortise plate I is provided with the usual screw holes II] for screws, not shown, for securing said plate I and the casting I' in the door 2.
A bolt-locking cylinder I I is rotatably fitted in a segmental recess I2 in the rear end of the frame bar 3 with its sides fitting between the cheek plates 4, 5 and with a pair of hubs I3, I4 on opposite sides thereof rotatably mounted in said cheek plates 4, 5. The bolt-locking cylinder II is provided on one side of its median plane with a peripheral recess I5 therein, the bottom of which forms a flat straight shoulder I6 at a right angle to said plane and the purpose of which will presently appear. The bolt-locking cylinder is locked in either of two positions, in one of which the recess I5 is disposed forwardly, as regards the front and rear ends of the casing l', and in the other of which said recess I5 is disposed rear- Wardly. In either of such positions of the boltlocking cylinder II the shoulder I6 is disposed vertically. For locking the bolt-locking cylinder II, the usual diametrically opposite, coplanar series of two-part tumbler pins I! are provided, there being two series of such pins radially slidable in said cylinder II with separate, enlarged outer end sections I8 projecting into corresponding series of bores I9 in the frame bar 3, as best shown in Figures 1 and 3, said pins I! being spring-biased, as at 20, to seat said sections I8 in said cylinder I I and to project the inner ends of said pins I'I into a keyway 2| in said cylinder II. Cover plates 22 close the outer ends of the bores I 9. The keyway 2| is of the usual flat, tortuous type to receive a similarly shaped key 23 having toothed edges 24 for moving said pins I'I outwardly when the key 23 is slid into said keyway 2 I. As will be understood, when the key 23 is thus entered in the keyway ZI', the tumbler pins I! are forced outwardly of said cylinder II to move the outer end sections I8 out of said cylinder I I into the bores I9, in opposition to the spring 20, and said bolt-locking cylinder is thus 11nlocked and may be rotated by said key 23 into either of the two described positions. A springbiased, transverse click pin 25 in the bolt-locking cylinder II yieldingly seating in seats 26, 2'! in the front cheek plate 4 establishes the two positions of said cylinder II. The keyway 2I' is aligned transversely with a slot 28 in the door 2 and with a keyhole rotary disc 29 in an outside escutcheon plate 30 on the front side of said door 2 secured to said door by screws 3|.
A latch bolt 32 is slidably fitted in said casing l with the usual front beveled end 33 slidable in a rectangular aperture 34- in the mortise plate '1'. The latch bolt 32 is endwise and front slidable to project the front end 33 thereof ut of the mortice plate 1 into the usual keeper plate 35 on the door frame 36 to thereby latch the door 2, and to retract said end .33 out of said plate 35 to unlock said door 2. A pair of upper and lower edge stop lugs 3'! on said latch bolt 32 project into longitudinal top and bottom edge recesses 38 in the frame member 3 and limit projectionof the latch bolt 32 by engagement with the front ends,
of said recesses. A pair of coil springs 39 interposed, in said recesses 38, between the rear ends of the recesses and said lugs 37, yieldingly project the latch bolt 32 into latching position. The rear end of the latch bolt 32, when the bolt-locking cylinder H is rotated into the second-described locked position thereof to dispose the shoulder it rearwardly, is engaged by said cylinder 1 I and iocked against retraction, as shown in Figures 1 and 4. In the second-described locked positionof said belt-locking cylinder 1 with the shoulder i 6 disposed forwardly, said latch bolt 32 is unlocked and maybe retracted into the recess [5 against said shoulder it. A-siderecess 39' inthe rear-end of the latch bolt '32 accommodates the po'rtion'of the bolt-lodlingcylinder ll opposite the recess 15 when the latch bolt "321s retracted to permit retraction of said latch bolt.
Forretracting the latchbolt 32 a pair of inside and outside finger'lever flit-4G are pivoted intermediate the-ends thereof as at 4|, 4l"-in a-pairof pocket 32, 52' formed in an inside escutch'eon plate-3 5$", and the outside "escutcheon plate 30 said leversdihdd extending out of said plates 30, 33 to be rocked vertically. 'The 'bef'orementi'oned screws 3i secure the inside-escutcheon plate 30 to the-door 2. The door-2 is slotted,as at'iil, '5Ito permit play of the finger griplevers 43, '50 therein. Asafety catch, ornight latch,-isprovided for the latch bolt 32 and which comprises a cylinder like member 53, with a fiat side- 54, rotatably mounted-intheupper leg o'f-the frame-bar 3-to extendcrosswiseof-the top edge of thelatch-bolt 3 2the arrangement being-such that said member 53 may be rotated into a transverse upper edge notch 55 in the latch bolt 32 to lock said bolt against retraction, or rotated to oppose its fiat side 54 to the upper edge of the latch bolt 32 and thereby unlock said latch bolt. With its flat side 54 rotated in opposed relation to the upper edge of the latch bolt 32, said member 53 is prevented from rotating when the latch bolt 32 is retracted. A spring-pressed click pin 55 in said member 53 coacting with seats 57in the front cheek plate 3 yieldingly establishes the described different positions of said member 53. Reduced ends 58, 59 on said member 53 are journaled in the cheek .platesi i, 5, respectively. For operating the member .53, a lever til is fixed, by a pin Bl, on the reduced end 62 of a spindle 53 fitted in a recess G l in the door 2 and aligned with said member 53, with the reduced end 62 journaled in and projecting out of the escutcheon plate 3%. The spindle 63 is keyed at its otherend, as at 65, to the end 59 of said member 53.
As will now beseen, my improved latch may be lo'olzed by hey from the outside of the door 2 only, thedescribed safety catch, or night latch, providing for looking on the inside of the door 2. Also, the latch bolt 32 may be retracted to unlatch the door 2 from boththe inside and out- 'side-of-sa id door andby meansof the finger grip levers 30,10.
"The ioregoing will, itis believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention since the operation of the lock has been set forth in connection with the descriptionof the structure thereof, and, therefore, further description is not deemed to be required.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein re served to such modifications as 'fall within the scope of the appended claim.

engaging-said rear end of saidbolt in the looking .latch bolt ;in the-unlocking position of :thecylinder and said rear ehd'iof .thejlatch bolt having a side recess therein for accommodating .a pertion-ofthe cylinder in the unlocking {position of said cylinder.
