Description

(No Model.) I
D. GOLDSMITEL LOQKET.
' Patented Sept. 27,1881.
fiwwzy BY WITNESSES @M INVENTOR a/a J47%% ATTORNEY i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL GOLDSMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,ASSIGNOR TO STERN BROTHERS & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
LOCKET.
SPECIFTGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,556, dated September 27, 1881.
Application filed Mareh7, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL GOLDSMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention refers to an improved construction oflockets; and it consists of a locket provided with-lunged and spring-acted lidsections which overlap each other at the center and are secured by a suitable spring-catch,
to the frame of the locket.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent front elevations of my im- 1 proved locket respectively in closed and open position. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line a; m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the same, with back plate removed to show interior construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a locket, of any suitable shape, which is provided with two symmetrically-arranged lid-sections, B, of suitable size and shape, which are hinged to the frame of the locket, one section overlapping the other when closed, and being secured to the frame by means of a spring-catch, 0. Each lid-section B is acted upon at the inside by a spring, a,in the 0 nature of a watch-case spring, which tends to throw the lid-section into open position as soon as the spring-catch device 0, by which both are retained, is released by'pressing thereon. Ahook-catch, b, of the overlapping lid-section B enters through an opening, cl, of the locketframe to the inside of the same, and passes back of a locking-spring, d, which engages -the hook-catch so as to lock the lid-section.
from the hookcntch of the lid-section, and consequently both lid-sections thrown open by their springs. On closing the lid-sections the spring-catch device which consists of the hook d, spring (1, and push e, locks the overlapping lid-section, which thereby retains the other section in closed DOSlTlOIL.
The locket may thusbe quickly and con- 0 veniently opened or closed, so as to expose the picture or other contents thereof. The same principlemay also he applied to finger-rings, scarf-pins, and other articles which may be opened with great facility.
Having thus described my inventioinl claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in lockets, the locketframe and hinged lidsections, the edge of one overlapping the edge ofthe other when closed, and the springs a, in combination with the lockingdevice at the lower end of the frame, substantially as shown and desr-ribed'.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionl have signed my name, in presence of -two witnesses, this 11th day of February, 1881.
DANIEL GOLDSMITH.
