road tracks, by means of a water hose, the free end of which has to be carried back and forth by an attendant for filling operations.
It frequently happens that during the operations the free end of the hose is dragged over the ground surface, or accidentally drops to the ground surface, with the result that foreign, contaminating substances are picked up by the discharge end of the hose and are eventually discharged into the tank along with the water.
In the present invention it is proposed to provide a sanitary discharge nozzle for the hose, the nozzle having protecting means for its discharge end which completely covers the latter at all times except during actual dispensing operations.
It is further proposed to arrange the protecting means in such a manner that it may be easily retracted to clear the discharge end for dispensing operations.
It is further proposed in the present invention to arrange the protecting means in the form of two cylindrical sections forming a complete enclosure about the discharge end of the nozzle,
the two sections being hinged so that they may be separated to allow of their retracting movement.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide cooperating means on the nozzle and the cylindrical sections whereby the latter are automatically opened during the retractin movement.
It is further contemplated in the present invention to arrange the opening means for the two cylindrical sections in such a manner that no part thereof will ever contact the discharge end of the nozzle.
And finally, it is proposed to provide a sanitary discharge nozzle of the character described that is very efiicient in operation, convenient in use, practically tamper-proof, rugged and simple in construction, and all parts of which may be readily cleaned from the inside by the mere turning on of the water while the parts are in nozzle protecting position.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear as the specification proceeds, and the novel features of my invention will be fully defined in the claims attached hereto.

While I have shown only the preferred form of my invention, I wish to have it understood that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the claims attached hereto without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, my sanitary discharge nozzle comprises in its principal features a pipe section I having a pair of cams 2 mounted on opposite sides thereof, a slide 3 mounted on the pipe section and the cams with freedom of retracting and advancing movement, a pair of semi-cylindrical sections 4 having their rear ends pivoted to the slide as 'at 5 and having shoes 6 mounted for cooperation with the cams 2, a spring I on the pipe section urging the slide forward, and springs 8 interconnecting the two cylindrical sections and tending to close the same.
The pipe I is preferably straight and threaded at its rear end as at 9 for connection to the end of a water hose. The front end of the pipe section is open and has a suitable discharge end I0 connected thereto which is here shown as a short piece of flexible hose secured to the pipe by means of a clamp II. This discharge end is intended for insertion through a hole into the tank into which water is to be delivered.
The two cams 2 are disposed on opposite sides of the pipe section and run longitudinally thereof, extending rearwardly up to the threaded section 9. The front ends of the two cams are tapered as at l2, the taper rising gradually for a short distance and then rising abruptly as at I3 to merge into parallel upper and lower faces H which extend in parallel relation through the major portion of the length of each cam. A disc 15 is mounted upon the pipe immediately forward of the two cams and serves as a stop for the shoes 6, side portions of the disc being cut away to allow of the passing of the springs 8 on opposite sides thereof.
The slide 3 is in the form of a sleeve having a sliding fit on the pipe section I and the side cams 2, and being properly shaped to present material on opposite sides of the cams as at I6.

A sanitary discharge nozzle for a hose, comprising a pipe section adapted for securing upon the hose, a discharge end for the pipe section, a slide retractable on the pipe section, a longitudinally split cylinder pivoted upon the slide with freedom of opening and closing movements and shaped to enclose the discharge end when the slide is in advanced position, and cooperative means on the pipe section and the cylinder for opening the latte-r when the slide is retracted on the pipe section, the latter means comprising a pair of cams mounted longitudinally on the pipe section and shoes mounted on the cylinder sections and riding on opposite faces of the cams, and the cams being shaped to abruptly open the cylinder at the beginning of the retracting movement so as to maintain clearance between the cylinder and the discharge end.

In a sanitary discharge nozzle of the character described, a pipe section having longitwdinal cams on opposite sides thereof, a slide retractable on the pipe section and the earns, a split cylinder having two semi-cylindrical sections with their rear ends pivoted to the slide for opening and closing movements, and shoes on the cylinder sections cooperable with the cams for opening the cylinder when the slide is retracted.

In a sanitary discharge nozzle of the character described, a pipe section having longitudinal cams on opposite sides thereof, a slide retractable on the pipe section and the earns, a split cylinder having two semi-cylindrical sections with their rear ends pivoted to the slide for opening and closing movements, and shoes on the cylinder sections cooperable with the cams for opening the cylinder when the slide is retracted, the cylinder sections having closed ends to form a complete enclosure when the cylinder is closed.

In a sanitary discharge nozzle of the character described, a pipe section having longitudinal cams on opposite sides thereof, the cams having parallel upper and lower faces through the maj or portions of their lengths and being tapered in their front ends, a slide retractable on the pipe section and shaped for riding upon the major cam portions, a split cylinder having two semicylindrical sections with their rear ends pivoted to the slide for opening and closing movements,
and shoes on the cylindrica1 sections cooperable with the front ends of the cams for opening the cylinder upon initial retracting movement and oooperable with the major portions of the came for maintaining the cylinder open as the retract-- ing movement is continued.

In a sanitary discharge nozzle of the character described, a nozzle having a discharge end, and a cylinder mounted upon the nozzle to form a complete enclosure for the discharge end, the cylinder being split longitudinally to present two semi-cylindrical sections having their rear ends pivoted with respect to the nozzle for opening and closing movement, and "the cylinder being retractable upon the nozzle to clear the discharge end for dispensing operations.

In a sanitary nozzle of the character described, a nozzle having a discharge end, a cylinder retractable on the nozzle and shaped to normally form a complete enclosure for the discharge end, the cylinder being split longitudinah ly to present two semi-cylindrical sections pivoted at their rear ends for opening and closing movements, and cooperative means on the cylinder sections and the nozzle for automatically opening the cylinder when it is retracted.
12. In a sanitary nozzle of the character described, a nozzle having a discharge end, a cylinder retractable on the nozzle and shaped to normally form a complete enclosure for the discharge end, the cylinder being split longitudinally to present two semi-cylindrical sections pivoted at their rear ends for opening and closing movements, and cooperative means on the cylinder sections and the nozzle for automatically opening the cylinder when it is retracted, with means normally urging the cylinder into advanced position and means normally tending to close the cylinder.
