Description

(No Model.) v I G. W.; GATES.
FENCE.
Patented Sept. 27, 1881;
1.1V V'EJV TOR WITNESSES Adhww @ameys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. GATES, OF INDEPENDENOE,MISSOURI.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,493, dated September 27, 1881.
Application filed August 2,1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GATES, of Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. I
I Figure 1 is a side view of my improved fence as it appears when erected with posts. Fig. 2 is a top view of the fence erected temporarily without posts, and Fig. 3 is a view of one of the posts and bases.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to that class of fences which are constructed of separate portable panels; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents one of the panels of my improved fence, which consists of four vertical bars, B 13, connected by two or more horizontal rails or planks, 0, between, above, and below which several strands of ordinary barbed wire are stretched, as at D D. I would have it understood that the said barbed-wire strands may be disposed and arranged in any suitable convenient manner, and that their number may be varied to suit circumstances.
E E are the posts, which are made of wroughtiron or iron tubing or pipe, and provided with sharp cutting-edges F at their lower ends, so as to be readily driven into the ground.
G G are blocks or. bases, of metal, stone, or cement, having perforations H, through which the posts may be driven, while the blocks or collars remain upon the surface of or butslightly embedded in the ground. The said blocks thus (No model.)
serve to support or maintain the upright or vertical position.
When in practice a permanent fence is to be erected, I connect the vertical end bars of the adjoining panels by triple loops or links I, formed of wire, the central loops embracing the post which has been previously properly adjusted, and the end loops the vertical end bars, B, of the adjoining panels.- I would here state that the said end bars, B, are made somewhat shorter than the intermediate vertical bars,B, in order that their lower ends may rest upon the bases G, and thus be protected from decay caused by the moisture in the ground, with which they would otherwise come in contact. The fence thus constructed is simple, durable, easily erected, and very strong.
In erecting a portable fence, I place the panels in a zigzag course, and connect the adjoining vertical bars by single wire loops, as shown. This construction permits the several panels to be easily folded together, or, if desired, detached from each other and stored away or transported from place to place, as
posts in an occasion shall require.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in fences, the combination of the posts E, the perforated base-blocks G, and the panels, constructed as herein described, having vertical end bars, B, shorter than the intermediate ones, so as to rest upon the base-blocks G, and the connecting wire loops 1, as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing'as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE w. GATES.
