We? w Patented June 28, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICIE COMB George F. Benco, Philadelphia, Pa.
Application January 7,
4 Claims. (Cl. 13211) This invention relates to improvements in two piece longitudinally split combs.
An object of the invention is to provide an arranged alternately on tions.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved comb having cooperating interfor, and concealed snap fasteners and sockets for said fasteners arranged in the inner end surfaces of the comb sections.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved self cleaning sectional comb having alternate oppositely facing facing in one direction being supported on one comb section, and all of the teeth facing in the opposite direction being supported on the other comb section.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved two part comb which will be highly efficient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure .1 is a side elevation of the improved two part comb;
Figure 2 is a top comb;
Figure 3 is an exploded view showing the cooperating comb sections spaced apart and looking down upon the same;
Figure 4 is a view taken on the line ,44 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a modified form of end construction for the comb;
Figure 6 is a plan view of the assembled comb with parts thereof being broken away and in section to show the connecting means for said comb;
plan view of the improved teeth, all of the teeth- 1947, Serial No. 720,631
Figure 7 is a detail sectional View taken through the end of the comb sections showing a locking or snapping fastener therefor;
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 38 of Figure 1;
Figure 9 is a sectional view 9-9 of Figure 1;
Figure 10 is a transverse sectional view taken taken on the line through the centrally disposed interengaging lock,
fingers;
Figure 11 is a detail plan view disposed locking members;
Figure 12 is a sectional view taken on the line i2-l2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 13 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view through one end of the improved comb showing a modified joint construction for holding the comb parts together.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an front section 2 rear section 3.
The terminal ends i and 5 of the comb sections 2 and 3 are considerably enlarged and are formed with rounded ends for safety, so that in combing the hair, the end portions of the comb will not injure the scalp.
Positioned along the length of the front comb section 2 are a plurality of spaced teeth 6 which ends of the teeth 6 and 1 to protect or guard the finer teeth 6 and 1 should the comb be stood on edge. The comb section 2 is formed with an inwardly extending arcuate moulding 8 along its left hand side, the same being adapted to be received in a correspondingly shaped arcuate slot 5 in the adjacent side of said comb section 3. The right hand side of the comb section 2 is formed with an arcuate slot l0 and is adapted to receive the arcuate moulding strip H on the opposite inner right hand surface of the comb section 3,
whereby the sections 2 and 3 Will be definitely of the centrally 3 aligned and interlapped to form a seal when placed together.
Angularly disposed rounded seats 12 will be formed in the opposite inner end surfaces of the back comb section 3, and will cooperate with the outwardly extending locking fingers 13 formed on the opposite inner end surfaces of the front comb section 2.
Each of the comb sections 2 and 3 will be formed with the centrally disposed cooperating parallel extending rounded locking grooves 14 and locking fingers l5, whereby the central portion of the comb sections will be also locked together when said sections are snapped in assembled position. U
The oppositely disposed upwardly extending finger engaging manipulating shoulders l6 and I! are formed respectively on the front and back comb sections 2 and 3 intermediate the ends thereof, and have adjacent vertical edges shaped to provide the adjacent concave and convex portions l8, said shoulders being movable forwardly and backwardly when engaged by the fingers and functioning in a similar manner as do the snap lock fasteners generally found on womens pocket-books.
In Figure 7 of the drawings, there is illustrated a slight modified form of the end locking fingers and slots, there being a rounded or arcuate shoulder l9 between the comb sections 2 and 3 disposed inwardly from the opposite ends of the comb, whereas in Figure 9 of the drawings, the dividing line between the comb sections extends to the extreme end portions of said sections.
In Figure of the drawings, there is illustrated a slight variation in design of the comb in which the comb teeth extend outwardly from the back of the comb, as distinguished from the teeth extending flush with the comb back, as illustrated in Figure l of the drawings.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been devised and provided an improved form of two part longitudinally split comb which will be provided with means for securely locking said parts together for use, and means whereby said parts may be readily separated for holding the same under a hot water faucet for cleansing purposes.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A sectional comb comprising a pair of elongated complementary sections having depending double spaced teeth, interlocking arcuate moldand complementary slots formed on the engaging inner faces of the sections, interengaging fingers and sockets spaced along the inner faces of the sections and centrally extending finger manipulating extensions on said sections for moving said section apart.
2. A sectional comb comprising a front section and a back section, each of said sections having depending double spaced teeth, an enlarged tooth on one end of each section, an arcuate end shoulder formed on the inner surface of each section adjacent the enlarged tooth, a round terminal on each section oppos'te the end shoulder, said terminals being engaged in said shoulders, interengaging fingers and sockets spaced on the inner surface of each section and finger engaging complementary clasps formed on each section for selectively moving the inner surfaces of the sectioiis in and out of pressing engagement.
3. A sectional comb comprising a pair of compleinentary sections each including a back portion and a face portion and depending teeth, an enlarged tooth on one end of each section, an arcuate end shoulder formed on the face portion of each section adjacent the enlarged tooth, a roundterminal on each section opposite the end shoulder, interengag-ing angularly disposed fingers and sockets formed in the face portions between the end terminals and enlarged teeth and centrally extending finger engaging complementary clasps on each section, said clasps being arranged to snappingly draw the sections into a fixed face to face relation with the teeth in staggered depending placement.
4. A sectional comb comprising a pair of complementary sections each including a back portion and a fiat face portion and depending teeth, an enlarged tooth on one end of each section, an arcuate end shoulder formed on the face portion of each section adjacent the enlarged tooth, a roundterminal on each section opposite the end shoulder, intereng'aging angularly disposed fingers and sockets formed in the face portions between the end terminals and centrally extending finger engaging complementary clasps on each section, said clasps being arranged to snappingly draw the sections into a fixed face to face relation with the finger locked in the sockets and the teeth in staggered placement, said clasps being offset from their respective face portions and complementary locking channels formed in each section in reg istry with the clasps.
