Description

June 21, 1949. SHELTON METAL RADIANT FOR GAS HEATERS Filed July 22, 1948 E ag Patented June 21, 1949 METAL RADIANT FOR GAS HEATERS Roy Shelton, Chattanooga, Tenn., assignor to Samuel Stamping and Enameling Company, Chattanooga, Tenn., a corporation of Tennessee Application July 22, 1948, Serial No. 40,049
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to gas heaters.
The invention is more particularly concerned with an improved radiant construction for removable disposition over a gas burner in a suitable stove construction.
A primary object of the invention is the provision of a sheet metal radiant of cylindrical form for vertical disposition over a gas burner suitably arranged in a stove body.
A further object of the invention is to provide an elongated sheet metal cylindrical radiant having a multiplicity of relatively small apertures in the wall thereof, and the radiant having supporting means for removable disposition over a gas burner with its lower end in vertical spaced relation thereto.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a radiant in the form of a cylindrical shell constructed of stainless steel and which is capable of expeditious manufacture and is capable of long use while at the same time being capable v of radiating a maximum of heat.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein- Fig. 1 is a substantially vertical axial section through the improved stove with one of the front sliding doors being partially shown in front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view in the plane of line 22 on Fig. 1 and on a reduced scale.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view in the plane of line 33 on Fig. 1 and on a reduced scale.
Fig. 4 is an axial vertical section of the upper portion of the incandescent member or radiant.
While the body of the stove including the outer shell may be of various forms, a desired construction for use of the improved radiant or incandescent member comprises a suitable circular base l provided with supporting legs I l.
The upper end of the base is suitably rolled or otherwise formed to provide an inner vertical flange l2 and a curved portion providing in combination with flange I2 a circular track l3.
The outer shell may desirably comprise a rear semi-cylindrical portion [4 and a pair of foraminous sliding front doors l5, both of which are shown closed in Fig. 3 and only one of which is shown partially closed in Fig. 1.
The outer shell further comprises a circular upper portion I6 having a vertical flange I1 and a circular track l8.
The rear portion is suitably secured to flanges l2 and I1 and the doors are slidably supported 2 at their lower and upper edges in the tracks l3 and I8.
The upper portion l6 includes an inwardly directed horizontal flange l9 to which is secured the horizontal flange 20 of a drum member 2| which is provided with suitable openings 22 throughout its circumference.
A cover member 23 is removably supported on drum member 2| and is provided with a circumferential series of openings 24 in its otherwise closed top Wall 25.
A burner 26 is disposed in an aperture 21 in a plate 28 suitably secured to flange l2. The burner may be supported in position by a bracket 29 suitably secured to the bottom of plate 28.
A circular baflle plate 30 is supported within drum member 2! adjacent the top thereof as by means of legs 3| whose lower ends rest upon and are suitably secured to flange I9.
An important feature of the present invention resides in the improved metal radiant or incandescent member 32. It is preferably formed of stainless steel and is stamped out, perforated, and bent to proper form. This member is disposed axially of the outer shell including portions l4 and I5, and it is disposed vertically as indicated in Fig. 1.
The member 32 is in the form of a cylindrical shell which is open at its lower end and closed by a flanged disk 33 at its upper end and the cylindrical wall of the shell is provided with a multiplicity of small apertures 34.
The shell 32 is provided with a tongue 35 at its upper end and which is rigidly supported on the cylindrical wall thereof.
The tongue 35 is provided with an aperture 36 for removably receiving a hook 31 depending from and suitably secured to the bafile plate 30.
The tongue and hook provide a suspension for the shell 32 with its open lower end disposed a relatively short distance above the burner 26 as is indicated in Fig. l.
The lower end of the shell is provided with a pair of diametrically disposed legs 38 insertable in openings 39 in the plate 28 for maintaining the shell in proper vertical position above the burner 26.
It is to be particularly noted that the member 32 has its lower end in substantial spaced relation to the burner 26 whereby providing for admission of air to the inside of the radiant which is necessary for complete combustion of the gases.
While I have disclosed my invention in accordance with a single specific embodiment thereof,
such is to be considered as illustrative only and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being defined in the sub-joined claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
1. In a gas heating stove including a generally cylindrical vertical wall and a top cover, a horizontally disposed burner supported substantially axially of said wall and adjacent the bottom theijeof; a sheet metal cylindrical radiant disposed over said burner in substantially coaxial relation to said wall, and means for removably securing the radiant within the stove, said stove including a horizontally disposed baflle adjacent said top cover and a horizontally disposed plate adjacent the bottom of the wall, said means comprising a cooperating hook and tongue on the baflle and radiant for suspending the latter from the baiile, and said means further comprising a pairof legs depending from the lower end of the radiant and removably received in apertures in said plate.
2. A radiant for use in gas heating stoves comprising a sheet steel cylinder provided with apertures in the wall thereof, one end of said cylinder being open for disposition over a gas burner and a flanged disk closing the other end of the cylinder, together with Supporting means on the radiant comprising an apertured tongue adjacent said disk and a pair of legs adjacent the open end of the cylinder.
