UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. THEODORE HOFSTATTER, JR, OFNEW YORK, N. Y.
SOFA AND LOUNGE.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,350, dated September 20, 1881.
Application filed February 10, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, THEODORE H OFSTATTER, Jr., ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofas and Lounges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sofas and lounges having their head or end portions adjustable a vertical longitudinal section ofone end of a lounge containing my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 00 w of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of ieference indicate corre sponding parts.
a a are the side rails, and b I) the end rails, of the main frame.
A is the adjustable head or end, composed of sidebars, c c, and outer cross-bar, d. The side bars, 0, have their lower ends formed to enter between the rails a of the main frame, and are attached thereto by pins 6, so that the head may swing from a vertical to a horizontal position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. There may be a similar head at each end of the main frame, so that the article shall serve with both ends raised as a sofa; or either end may be turned down to the horizontal position.
to form a lounge, either right or left hand, as required.
ff are the latch-bars, hung at the inner sides of bars 0 bypivot-pinsf. The bars a are formed with grooved lugs that receive the latch-bars,
and throu h these lugs the pivot- )ins f )ass. e l I g g are curved racks, fixed on side rails, a, in position for being engaged by the bent lower ends of barsf.
h is a shaft, fitted in bars 0, across the outer part of head A, and carrying cams i t contiguous to the upper ends of latch-barsf. As shown, the shaft it passes through latch-bars f, but that is not essential.
k k are springs, fitted between bars 0 and latches], and tending to move the latter into engagement with racks g. The cams i are shaped to move the upper ends of latch-bars f outward when the shaft 71. is turned. To adjust the head A the shaft will be turned to disengage the latches from the racks, and the head can then be swung on its pivot 0. Then by turning the shaft a quarterrevolution latches f are released and engage with racks g. For convenience of operating the shaft it is provided with knobs or handles Z.
This mechanism is of durable character and is not liable to get out of order. The lounge or sofa will be suitably upholstered, so that the adjustable head may move as described, and in such manner that when the head is horizontal it forms an extension of the lounge on the same level. This may be readily done.
The cams maybe of different form from those shown, and the shalt it placed in a different position with relation to the latch-bars. I do not limit myself in these particulars.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with the head A, adapted to swing on the main frame, of the end-bent spring-held latch-barsf, l'ulcrumed on the inner sides of bars 0, the curved racks g, fixed on the sides of rails a, and the shaft h, carrying cams i in contact with the upper ends of said latchbars, as and for the purpose specified.
THEODORE HOFSTATTER, JR.
